pneumonia

Avatar m tn He was diagnosed with HIV, and Pneumocystis pneumonia having caught both diseases while on the job. I did some research on PCP and see that mainly AIDS patients have this disease. Both of my parents died of HIV after I was first born. My dad caught HIV through blood transfusion before blood was tested, he first had leukemia. I was told that I did not have HIV or AIDS and had nothing to worry about. I even did an anonymous at home HIV test last year as I was curious.
Avatar f tn HIV is the virus that can lead to AIDS. An HIV test will test for antibodies to the HIV virus in your bloodstream (though there are Saliva tests and I beleive some urine based tests). Someone who is HIV+ does not automatically have AIDS. A definition of AIDS is when the CD4 count is measured as being below 250.
Avatar f tn Mac infection is more common in patients with immuno compromised status like AIDS. The clinical course of pulmonary MAC infection in patients without HIV infection is usually indolent. In one study, approximately 50% of patients in one study were alive 5 years after diagnosis. Untreated patients with significant lung disease may develop respiratory insufficiency or weight loss. So, for relief from symptoms she can use expectorants and steam inhalations to help clear the secretions.
Avatar f tn Before the use of preventive antibiotics for the condition, most people in the United States with advanced AIDS would develop it.
Avatar m tn * First, the authors could find only 25 reported cases worldwide in the 30+ years of the known HIV/AIDS epidemic. Given the millions and millions of known cases, almost all of whom had positive antibody tests, this is an exceedingly small number. * Second, the results apply only to the stand-alone antibody tests. All the patients described had (or clearly would have had) positive DNA/RNA tests and p24 antigen tests. * Third, none of the reported patients was asymptomatic.
Avatar n tn It's a fungal Pneumonia and most people get it and are able to fight it. Those with AIDS that have a depleted immune system can't fight it and get really ill.

418165 tn?1295753981 I noticed the other day her cough, (this is the only symptom shes had), had came back a little worse then it was before. So we go to the dr and have another x-ray and shows pneumonia in the same spot, same size and everything.
Avatar m tn Pneumonia is very common, it has nothing to do with HIV. You are thinking about PCP Pneumonia, asssociated with AIDS. That occurs very late, in advanced infection when a person has transitioned to an "AIDS" diagnosis from being HIV infected. You don't have PCP Pneumonia, and you never had a risk for HIV. Put it behind you.
Avatar m tn I got series of tests yesterday and the dr said it may be Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, which is mainly confined to AIDS!! And he told me to test HIV.. I told him I had been tested for several times and results were all negative. He told me to have a CD4 count test.... I didn't obey and came home.. How could it happen?? Then I searched the net to see if it's possible to have HIV without being detected by tests, and it says some rare subtypes could be missed by some tests..
Avatar n tn Hi community, Over a year ago I had a brief exposure of unprotected(I'm female)vaginal sex. No ejaculation and less than a few minutes. I had the 4th gen test at almost 8 weeks and almost 10 weeks. In addition I performed an at home Oraquick at 6 and 6 1/2 months. All negative. Dr. Hook and my GP both assured me I am negative. However, I recently for the first time in my life have been diagnosed with bacterial lobar pneumonia. I'm healthy and in my 30s.
Avatar m tn Mortality from influenza is increased in patients with cirrhosis. Therefore, these patients should receive annual injections of influenza vaccine. During flu season cirrhotics are part of the high risk groups that are given priority for obtaining the vaccine. As far as other levels of liver disease or treatment, there is no standard recommending all of these vaccinations. Obviously they can't hurt. As you will never have to worry about becoming infected with these viruses. Cheers!
898849 tn?1241811271 I just heard about the recent death in Washington where the individual had a heart condition, pneumonia and swine flu. I was recently diagnosed with CHF in January, so all this is still very new to me.
Avatar m tn Because HIV is the causative agent of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), ICL can be referred to as Non-HIV AIDS. As in AIDS patients, Non-HIV AIDS patients exhibit reduced numbers of CD4+ T-lymphocytes, and many Non-HIV AIDS patients have developed the opportunistic infections or otherwise rare cancers associated with AIDS. Non-HIV AIDS patients may comprise perhaps one percent of all AIDS patients.
Avatar m tn m sorry to hear about your unlucky experience with pneumonia. But there is nothing in your story that suggests anything other than the garden-variety infections that cause almost all pneumonia in otherwise healthy persons. "Can you get Pneumocystis jiroveci Pneumonia from from kissing a hiv postive person?" No, you cannot. Unlike most everyday pneumonias, you don't catch Pneumocystis from other people.
Avatar m tn Twenty-six seronegative patients with AIDS had died, and 1 could not be located, but the race, age, reported risk factors for HIV infection, and history of AIDS-defining conditions of these 27 patients were comparable to those of HIV-seropositive patients with AIDS.
Avatar m tn I was dating a guy for nine months who I believe is at high risk for having HIV. At the time I had no idea. Three or so months after first having intercourse I started coming down with many health problems. I developed pneumonia, strange blotches on my body, and oral thrush. My doctor didn't figure out that I had pnuemonia for a couple of months and thought that the allergy medication he had me on for the skin blotches had caused the oral thrush.
Avatar f tn Twitching is one of the many possible symptoms of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) or AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), and may occur at any stage of infection with HIV or the development of AIDS. AIDS is defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as the condition occurring when a person infected with HIV has a T cell count of 200 or less or one of several serious conditions, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis or certain types of cancer. Avatar n tn As blood was extracted they were accidentally pricked with the needle of a patient who has the aids virus. PEP was used minutes after and the friend has confided in me. I dont know what to say as they are so loving and caring to patients now they are fearful. I dont work in that field and dont know what to say while they await results. I can see the fear in my friends eyes, please help me walk them through this as we remain hopeful.
Avatar f tn My baby has been diagnosed with pneumonia, a week ago. She still acts as if she is in pain, and has short rapid breaths. She is on Zeniquin, and a pain med. She was originally in an oxygen kennel for 2 days, and was pretty good when we brought her home. Now it seems like she gets these bouts of gasping for air, her gums are still pink. I am startin to think her vets arent sure what is wrong with her.
Avatar n tn Husband had headache with 103 fever off and on (mostly on) for more than a week. Finally, on the third time to the ER, they admitted him, diagnosing with pneumonia. He's been at the hospital for a week now, and although fever and headache gone, after CT scan and a couple other procedures, they just told him that his pneumonia hasn't gone away. The doctor said he's going to try different treatment, and tomorrow get a lung biopsy.
