806995 tn?1265823176 In November 2008 the results of a double blind test was published, where IR geno 1 HCV where treated with additional Metformin to suppress the IR. It worked, but mainly for women and fat people. However, I'm neither. http://www.natap.org/2008/AASLD/AASLD_41.htm Nevertheless, I'm wondering, would taking something like Metformin perhaps slow down my liver fibrosis? I want to wait for the new meds to arrive in two years time, but perhaps the increasing fibrosis will catch up with me.
Avatar n tn I'm a type II diabetic, diagnosed in 2001. I have been on victoza since around November of 2011. I wasn't considered overweight (147 and 5'7" tall). I have lost nearly 23 pounds and can't stop losing, it seems. My lack of appetite is real concerning to me as well as the other side effects and the effects on my liver and kidneys. I would love to get off this drug for sure.
Avatar f tn Other newer insulin-sensitising medicines include pioglitazone. This is not currently recommended for PCOS. For certain people with PCOS, a specialist may advise that metformin be taken. However, further research is needed to confirm the role of these medicines in the treatment of PCOS.

Avatar f tn Many patients with NASH have elevated blood lipids, such as cholesterol and triglycerides, and many have diabetes or pre-diabetes, but not every obese person or every patient with diabetes has NASH. Furthermore, some patients with NASH are not obese, do not have diabetes, and have normal blood cholesterol and lipids. NASH can occur without any apparent risk factor and can even occur in children. Thus, NASH is not simply obesity that affects the liver.
Avatar m tn Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90 - 95% of cases. In type 2 diabetes, the body does not respond properly to insulin, a condition known as insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates how the body converts sugar (glucose) into energy.

Avatar m tn The most important recommendations given to persons with this disease are to reduce their weight (if obese or overweight) * follow a balanced and healthy diet * increase physical activity * avoid alcohol (which is toxic to the liver) * avoid unnecessary medications which can further stress your liver These are standard recommendations, but they can make a difference. They are also helpful for other conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

Avatar f tn The addition of dexamethasone, to a clomiphene regimen may increase the likelihood of ovulation by suppression of ACTH and any circulating adrenal androgens. For women who are unresponsive to clomiphene, the oral hypoglycemic agents like metformin could be of little help, or pioglitazone, may bring resumption of regular cycles and ovulation. These agents reduce the hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenemia in PCOS. These are actually medically prescribed medicines for PCOS.
Avatar n tn If you do carry some extra weight, then losing those 10 pounds would be very beneficial because extra fat cells do cause increased insulin resistance. But for now, your fasting numbers are well within the normal range. Normal for a fasting glucose is considered anything between 70-126, according to my endocrinologist. Some endocrinologists alter these numbers a little, but you are within the normal range even if the 126 were lowered to 110, which some doctors tend to do.
26471 tn?1211936521 2E1 is a big problem, especially for HCV patients with diabetes, which upregulates 2E1 expression even more. Unfortunately, most 2E1 inhibitors cause problems with platelet agglutination, with the notable exception of nicotine, which actually promotes agglutination. I tried garlic oil, which I don't recommend.
Avatar f tn Take Prilosec for GERD and a potasium pill. Also on Peri-Colace for stomach problems. Spoke with the Dr. and discontinued all pills for a few days to see if it had any effect and it did not. Still swelling. Right now about 5 pounds of water, by tonight it will be 10 pounds. With being diabetic thought maybe CHF - told no, though renal problems - told no, not sure what it is, but need to find out. Thank you!
Avatar f tn Either way, your cells don’t ‘absorb’ insulin efficiently; quite often, this is often a yellow flag for developing diabetes later in life. The test for IR is the ‘HOMA IR’ test; it includes your insulin and glucose levels. The data regarding insulin resistance and its subsequent effect on HCV treatment is fairly new, and I don’t think there’s a firm consensus or body of knowledge available yet… only select studies showing a better response for patients that manage IR.
Avatar m tn I am obese (300lbs), diabetic (type 2) and require medication to control hypetension. I take the following medications – Metformin, Pioglitazone, Victoza (liraglutide), Amlodipine, Ramipril, Bendroflumethiazide, Asprin and Statin. I have a strange and embareasin problem. Avatar m tn wow! for a 109 year old guy you sure are doing well !! :) thanks for the insight. i do make excuses for lack of control on my diet but i have made progress. Avatar m tn Also important is treatment with diabetes drugs, such as metformin and pioglitazone, to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce fat accumulation in the liver. This might reverse disease progression, the researchers note. Other approaches to enhance patients' response to combination drug therapy may include longer duration of treatment and higher doses to counteract the decreased response to the drugs.
Avatar m tn His first treatment was with soc for 48 weeks the second with soc for 72 weeks and the last with Inc. I was just wondering if perhaps weight had anything to do with it. Thank you for responding.
