Avatar m tn the other connection diabetes/lipids/liver cancer is that diabetes is by very far the highest risk for liver cancer, the second but much lower is uncomensated cirrhosis and then compensated cirrhosis and severe fibrosis share about same risk.
Avatar f tn Clinical trials are also looking at the effectiveness of certain antioxidants and newer diabetes medications in treating fatty liver disease. This is because of the disease's link to oxidative stress and diabetes.
806995 tn?1265823176 agreed that the '08 metformin study did not make a strong case for adding metformin in all patients, however you might also want to look at a recent Khattab'10 study that looked at adding pioglitazone in geno 4s with HOMA1 gt 2. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19919569 They measured across-the-board improvement in SVR rates 60% vs 39% significant at 0.04. Geno 4s seem to be particularly susceptible to IR-related effects so this may not generalize.
Avatar n tn m attempting to see an alternative medicine physician because I believe that with diet, the correct diet and supplements, I can control my diabetes much better. I am in the process of changing to vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. My clothes just hang on me. I was fine when I was down to 130 pounds, but really don't feel I need to lose more. Doctor is also pushing to put me on cholesterol and blood pressure medicine, when both are fine. B.P.
Avatar n tn HI, It sounds like your wife will definitely need an additional medication--if not restarting the Pioglitazone, then an alternative. There are lots of different diabetes medications available that will help. Those glucose levels are indeed too high and should be addressed soon. Please ask your wife to contact her doctor as soon as possible(I suggest within the next 2 days a most) and discuss being started on another medication to bring her levels down.
Avatar f tn Metformin is a medicine that is commonly used to treat people with type 2 diabetes. It makes the body's cells more sensitive to insulin. This may result in a decrease in the blood level of insulin which may help to counteract the underlying cause of PCOS - see above. Other newer insulin-sensitising medicines include pioglitazone. This is not currently recommended for PCOS. For certain people with PCOS, a specialist may advise that metformin be taken.
Avatar f tn Many patients with NASH have elevated blood lipids, such as cholesterol and triglycerides, and many have diabetes or pre-diabetes, but not every obese person or every patient with diabetes has NASH. Furthermore, some patients with NASH are not obese, do not have diabetes, and have normal blood cholesterol and lipids. NASH can occur without any apparent risk factor and can even occur in children. Thus, NASH is not simply obesity that affects the liver.
Avatar m tn Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90 - 95% of cases. In type 2 diabetes, the body does not respond properly to insulin, a condition known as insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates how the body converts sugar (glucose) into energy.

Avatar f tn The CARF (the organization responsible for the research in the type of alopecia) has had some new insights, which says that the use of Actos (a diabetes drug) has been shown to give benefits. It appears that there is a build up of toxic lipids in the patients with this disorder and this diabetes drug apparently aids with destroying the toxins.
Avatar m tn The most important recommendations given to persons with this disease are to reduce their weight (if obese or overweight) * follow a balanced and healthy diet * increase physical activity * avoid alcohol (which is toxic to the liver) * avoid unnecessary medications which can further stress your liver These are standard recommendations, but they can make a difference. They are also helpful for other conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
Avatar n tn Bitter melon is mainly used by ppl of Chinese or Phillipine ancestry so maybe someone will chime in about this melon. 488724 tn?1253551235 t know that, that would be a significant probability of pregnancy however, if they are over 200 thats nothing to let go, you need to have it addressed asap. I do know that diabetes can be a problem when you are pregnant but I can't say I ever heard that those symptoms point to pregnancy. I agree...try the over the counter pregnancy test if you have missed your cycle. Good luck.
Avatar f tn For women who are unresponsive to clomiphene, the oral hypoglycemic agents like metformin could be of little help, or pioglitazone, may bring resumption of regular cycles and ovulation. These agents reduce the hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenemia in PCOS. These are actually medically prescribed medicines for PCOS.As this syndrome is very common in women the case is often individualised and treatment option will be processed and prescribed.Fell free to talk to your Doc.
26471 tn?1211936521 Drug Lowers Conversion To Type 2 Diabetes By 81% In Multicenter Study June 11, 2008 In a research study of hundreds of patients facing the prospect of developing type 2 diabetes, the oral drug pioglitazone (Actos) reduced the rate of conversion to the disease by 81 percent in the active therapy group compared to those taking a placebo, the study leader, Ralph A. Avatar f tn Is the pitting edema progressive? Are you on pioglitazone? or rosiglitazone? Answers to these questions would further help.
Avatar f tn Either way, your cells don’t ‘absorb’ insulin efficiently; quite often, this is often a yellow flag for developing diabetes later in life. The test for IR is the ‘HOMA IR’ test; it includes your insulin and glucose levels. The data regarding insulin resistance and its subsequent effect on HCV treatment is fairly new, and I don’t think there’s a firm consensus or body of knowledge available yet… only select studies showing a better response for patients that manage IR.

Avatar m tn Hi I am so sorry to hear of your troubles, I have read that weight can affect SVR. Also diabetes can make it hard to get to SVR. Not saying he has diabetes just thought I would mention. The second time I treated I tried very hard to keep my sugar level balanced.
Avatar m tn Also important is treatment with diabetes drugs, such as metformin and pioglitazone, to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce fat accumulation in the liver. This might reverse disease progression, the researchers note. Other approaches to enhance patients' response to combination drug therapy may include longer duration of treatment and higher doses to counteract the decreased response to the drugs.
