Avatar f tn As you mention, valproic acid has various side effects, weight gain is a common one. Other antiepileptic medications do not cause weight gain, but each has its side effects, some are much more tolerable than others. While it is great news that your MRI has not shown any tumor recurrence, this does not necessarily imply that you are no longer at risk for seizures.
Avatar f tn If you are pregnant your doctor may gradually decrease the dose and stop it and may prescribe an alternative anti seizure medicine which is safe during pregnancy. Sudden withdrawal of antiseizure medication may precipitate seizures in a pregnant woman which can be dangerous for the fetus. Medicines are prescribed during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the risks. Your doctor may prescribe you high dose folic acid 4 mg to prevent spinal cord deformities. I sincerely hope it helps.
Avatar n tn I had a vitrectomy for epiretinal peel six months ago. Dr. says scar tissue has formed again and I am scheduled for the same surgery next week. My vision did not improve. What are the chances of improvement this time? I AM ALSO TAKING AN EXPERIMENTAL DRUG FOR 4 MONTHS "VALPROIC ACID".

Avatar n tn I used valproic acid 5 years.I stop taking the drug and no seizures for 8 years. After I had the first time seizure and ı went a doctor, he did not give me drug. After 2 years I had seizure again and I started using lamictal 75 mg. I'm using 2.5 years. For a year, I have amenorrhea and eye floaters. I got about 30 kilos. It was very difficult to get used to the drug. Re-live the same things I'm afraid to go to the doctor. What should I do, I need help. These side effects are serious?
Avatar m tn Hi everyone, I'm new to this community. My neurologist just informed me that Osteoporosis and shrinkage of the Cerebellum are very serious side effects for long term users of Dilantin. Does anyone know more about this? I've been taking 500mg of Dilantin for over 30 years since I was a teenager, and now I'm terribly worried. Not one of the neurologists had mentioned anything about this over the years, and now at 46, I've learned that I may have severe osteoporosis.
Avatar m tn Pharmacotherapy usually involves drug modulating GABAergic neurotransmission like Levetiracetam, Piracetam, Clonazepam or Valproic acid against prescription. I suggest you to consult neuro physician for his further evaluation and management. Take care and regards.

646410 tn?1247251853 I haven't been on Prozac for years. It was really bad for me. I take valproic acid & (I think) Celexa, not to mention a bunch of other meds for allergies. Nearly all of them warn "drowsiness may occur." Ugh. I'm not going off of any of the drugs until the Dr's tell me to.
Avatar f tn Now he is on valproic acid and doing much better. I have heard others say the same but about valproic acid, so I assume that the reaction that they have to meds is a personal one...each child is different!! Make sure that this child is seeing a neurologist or epileptologist....Keep a jouranl of all modd, behavior, physical and social issues and bring these up to the dr. This will help them determine when a med needs to be changed.
Avatar f tn During those times I had not yet been diagnosed and was able to go back to life like normal, however after the diagnosis and being on phenytoin and switching to oxcarbazepine i am feeling awful. Dizzy, nauseated, moody, extremely tired, severe headaches that come and go. All i get from my Neurologist is these are side effects that will eventually go away. Because i never know when these symptoms will come on too strong I have missed a lot of days at work during my probation period.
Avatar f tn He has officially gained 9 pounds in one months time while taking Risperdone alone (no longer taking Adderall XR which had offset the appetite). Also taking Valproic Acid to control seizures and Paxil for anxiety. Thanks again!

Avatar m tn I saw your same question on another site which got some expert advice that said, "There are two other anticonvulsants that doctors use to treat intractable hiccups: valproic acid and gabapentin." I hope that you saw it which was posted before your answer back to me. But in case not, I've included it here. Hope that it might help.
Avatar f tn Hello, I'd like to see Depakote (Valproic Acid) added to the medications available on the tracker for mood. Thank you very much for your assistance.
Avatar n tn ve been told verapamil and valproic acid or lamotrigine may help my situation, it would be great to see if it does improve my condition but i'm unsure if ill be able to even try the drugs as i don't think the neurologist will be convinced. He allowed me to try adalat the last time i saw him which did nothing. what should i do if he doesn't allow me to at least try the medications which could help me??
