Avatar f tn During those times I had not yet been diagnosed and was able to go back to life like normal, however after the diagnosis and being on phenytoin and switching to oxcarbazepine i am feeling awful. Dizzy, nauseated, moody, extremely tired, severe headaches that come and go. All i get from my Neurologist is these are side effects that will eventually go away. Because i never know when these symptoms will come on too strong I have missed a lot of days at work during my probation period.
947976 tn?1245864691 t mention in your post if you have had blood tests for FGF 23 and 1,25 Dihydroxyvitamin d levels,Oncogenic Osteomalacia can be difficult to diagnose because the mostly benign tumours are very small but they can sometimes be found if memory serves with an Octreotide scan. This condition can also be relieved in some cases with high doses of Calciferol (a type of vitamin d) but long term doses need to be monitored closely.
Avatar m tn This reaction is generally confined to the extremities but can affect the trunk and face and may be irreversible. Severe dermatologic reactions to phenytoin are infrequent. Some evidence, however, suggests that erythema multiforme is more likely in patients who undergo radiation therapy while receiving phenytoin.[22] Lupus-like symptoms have been described for phenytoin. Whether phenytoin administration will exacerbate preexisting idiopathic systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is unclear.
Avatar f tn Folic acid supplementation in folate-deficient patients with epilepsy changes the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin, usually leading to lower serum phenytoin concentrations and possible seizure breakthrough..." It however says that initiation of Folic acid and phenytoin together is beneficial. Since you can't go back and start all over again, you can take a small dose. It has been observed that as los as 1mg dose can perturb phenytoin’s levels, You may take doses lower than 1mg/day.
Avatar n tn Combining fluoxetine or paroxetine with phenytoin can also lead to increased phenytoin side effects and reduce blood levels of paroxetine. You really need to discuss the potential drug interactions with your own doctor.

Avatar n tn Moban® brand of molindone hydrochloride contains calcium ions which interfere with the absorption of phenytoin. Ingestion times of phenytoin and antacid preparations containing calcium should be staggered in patients with low serum phenytoin levels to prevent absorption problems”. Taken from http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/phenyt_od.htm Our population is divided into 4 type of metabolizers ranging from rapid to slow metabolizers depending upon the speed of elimination of drug from body.
Avatar n tn It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. Avatar n tn It definately not lactose intolerance. I've tried elimating dairy on more than one occassion. The only thing thats ever really help was eliminating red meat and fatty foods. I've read that the main part of digestion of protein and fats is the stomach. I think it might be caused by a lack of stomach acid. I think flatulence and bloating is it main symptom of hydrchlohydria and i've read that calcium and other minerals require an acid enviroment to be digested.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your question, you are relatively fine with Phenytoin and the seizure episodes in a form of lack of speech are the residue of a generalized type seizure. I don’t have a full description of your consciousness during the lack of speech episodes to decide whether this start is a partial epilepsy which can continue in a generalized or it is a generalized one from the first moment..
Avatar m tn Whereas if you are a chronic alcoholic, the phenytoin levels may be lower than expected and can cause seizures. I suggest you consult with your neurologist in this regard. Hope this information helps. Take care.
Avatar f tn If you are pregnant your doctor may gradually decrease the dose and stop it and may prescribe an alternative anti seizure medicine which is safe during pregnancy. Sudden withdrawal of antiseizure medication may precipitate seizures in a pregnant woman which can be dangerous for the fetus. Medicines are prescribed during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the risks. Your doctor may prescribe you high dose folic acid 4 mg to prevent spinal cord deformities. I sincerely hope it helps.

Avatar m tn Subsequent to discharge on 10 July, she was put on phenytoin 200 mg od. She broke out with fever again on 15 July and the fever lasted for about 4 days with daily temperature peaking in the afternoon (max 101 F). The face and body were covered with rash similar to measles which resolved by 20 July. Could she have had measles at her age? Why did she have convulsions? Could anyone throw any light on the episode.

Avatar f tn There are several bone disorders too that can raise this enzyme like rickets, osteomalacia, Paget’s disease of the bone, tumors, metastasis and recent fracture. If the bilirubin too is raised so high then hepatitis (A, B, C,E), liver abscess, obstruction of common bile duct by stone, cholangitis, gall bladder disease affecting the liver too and can also be due to cancer. So if your sister’s condition is failing then you should consult a hepatologist and rule out the above conditions.
Avatar n tn Please post your question as a separate post because this post is so old. Thanks!

Avatar f tn In PKD there may be osteomalacia and vitamin D deficiency. A common complication of polycystic kidney disease is high blood pressure. Kidney failure is another complication. It may be best to get an evaluation done. A clinical examination and work up like ultrasound kidney, ureter bladder, and kidney function tests, vitamin D levels and calcium may be done. Treatment will depend on the cause. Do write to me again with more queries. Best luck and regards!

Avatar f tn A few weeks ago I woke up with yellow crust on the corner of my lips and it went away in 2 days, and today I woke up and it's in the exact same spot again except a little more then before. It doesn't hurt or itch, it feels like my lips are very very dry. I don't smoke, I have grandmal seizures and my medication is phenytoin and kepra but I didn't read anywhere that would be a side effect so I'm worried this could be a STD or something.
1936411 tn?1333831849 ve heard of that might help with the itch are trying the over the counter antihistamines or antihistamine hydroxyzine (Atarax), anticonvulsants (e.g. gabapentin, carbamazepine, phenytoin), antidepressants (e.g. amitriptyline, paroxetine, mirtazapine), and even Pregabelin (Lyrica)....
Avatar m tn I started having muscle lose about six months ago. Arms and legs, especially the upper legs in the back. Very weak in the legs in the upper part. Quickly, I had a fusion in neck 3 years ago and it did not take completely but last mri shows no change so Dr said leave it alone for now.
