Common Questions and Answers about Pancreatitis causes weight gain

pancreatitis

Avatar n tn I have chronic pancreatitis and have been taking enzymes since July to help me digest food, not have pain with eating, and to gain weight. They have been very helpful for me and I am able to eat a lot fat diet with few problems, and have gained some of my weight back. If you wish me to answer any more specific questions, please feel free to post again.
Avatar n tn Steatorrhea can be caused by chronic pancreatitis or various causes of malabsorption. The normal CT scan would make chronic pancreatitis less likely. I would consider a lower endoscopy (i.e. colonoscopy) to evaluate for any type of malabsorption. Blood tests can also be considered to look for celiac disease. These options can be discussed with your personal physician or on conjunction with a GI opinion. Followup with your personal physician is essential.
Avatar n tn I've talked to my doctor - he's run thyroid (i'm in the normal range) and diabetes (normal, again), and there's just nothing he knows or that I'm finding that shows a causal relationship between pancreatitis and weight gain or gallbladder and weigth gain. This change, however, clearly stems from the surgery (or rather, the combination of symptoms and procedures).
902019 tn?1249865014 The symptoms of autoimmune pancreatitis for me were weight loss, pale stools, gallbladder-like attacks (but longer-lasting) and elevated liver function tests - which initially were thought to be a bile duct obstruction complicated by blockage of gallbladder sludge. Stenting the common bile duct and later removal of gallbladder (which was in bad shape) still didn't solve the problems. See my response (above) to DT10 for further info.
Avatar m tn Hi, I saw a post of a case similar to mine where the liver was affected as well as the pancreas with wieght gain instead of loss on a low fat diet. Im wondering what causes that especially in pancreatitis? I loss alot of weight a year ago, was real sick with abnormal bruising and weakness, falling down, ect, this was before pancreas started acting up again, prior to that I had only one acute episode of pancreatitis.
Avatar n tn I'll be 46 at the end of this month & just moved to a new state so I don't have the luxury of knowing any doctors. In the last 1-2 months I suddenly gained 40 + lbs & look pregnant. That seems to be where the weight all is. A urinalysis proved negative for pregnancy on Monday & with my 3 grown kids I did not gain this much weight &/or so fast. I just look pregnant & feel "full - heavy - tired & short of breath" most of the time.
Avatar m tn The increasing insulin doses to control my blood sugar was a contributing factor in a significant weight gain month after month post surgery. My clinic endocrinologist said I could not take Byetta because of its potential problems with kidney function, but prescribed Victoza. Drs have had limited experience with the drug but she said on the dozen or so patients she put on Victoza, some had good experience with weight loss.
Avatar f tn Treatment involved supportive management of the symptoms (cerenia is a great anti-vomiting medication you could try), dietary management to help with weight gain (she was eating a high calorie vet prescription diet), and initially prednisone and metronidazole to reduce the inflammation of the abdominal tumors. Ask your vet if this condition is a possibility. Good luck, I really feel for you and hope everything turns out better. Dr.
Avatar n tn I asked my GI if I should take Boost or Ensure to gain, he said I might want to try if I was that concerned about trying to gain weight. Someone suggested protein bars. I don't know why I continue to lose. He took blood last week. Called today to say hemoglobin/iron/red blood cells all low. Want me to come in for more labwork. Maybe they're low due to acid suppressant. I'm 5'9" and 130 looks okay, but I look bony. Will let you know what the doc says.
Avatar n tn I cannot gain weight, though. Still, my symptoms are making daily life very tough. Yesterday my morning diarrhea and cramps were about the worst yet. Any diet that would help me gain weight without inducing diarrhea would really be helpful. Thanks.

Avatar n tn 1. High fat foods and weight gain. 2. Age. Triglycerides levels steadily increase as you grow older 3. Medications like birth control pills, steroids, and diuretics 4. Illness like diabetes, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, and liver disease. 5. Heredity. http://www.all-about-lowering-cholesterol.com/causes-of-high-triglycerides.html One of the main causes of high triglycerides which you can control ,is high fat food.
Avatar n tn The enzymes also help the patient to gain weight, as many pancreatitis patients suffer from slight to severe weight loss. The causes of chronic pancreatitis can be from alcohol, gallbladder disfunction, dysfunction and obstruction of pancreatic ducts, hereditary, use of certain medically prescribed drugs, ERCP's and scorpion bites. Some cases are labelled as idiopathic (cause unknown).
Avatar n tn Hi-- Can anyone tell me if weight gain is a common result of gallbladder removal? I am also curious if it will affect my metabolism. I guess I have a very high metabolism b/c I can eat a lot of junk w/o gaining weight (that's what everyone says, anyway.) Just curious if I will lose this "gift"! What other changes should I expect? Thanks!!
Avatar n tn It just seems that I can't gain weight because everything goes right thru me. I have no blood in my stool. My stool has no shape or anything just pieces. My energy was good, but it is waning.
Avatar f tn My appetite, sleep and health are generally all fine otherwise, with no noticeable weight loss/gain, no fatigue, no fever. I would say it is more discomfort from bloating/trapped gas rather than pain. Any ideas? Thanks. This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/233435'>pain in left side under rib cage</a>.
Avatar f tn Every thing came back normal, was put on an acid reducer, helped the upper half, lower left above my hip hurts, I weighted 125 and I can not get back to that weight, I am 96 pounds, no nurtions(misspelled) are going to my body for me to gain weight.Could it be enzymes? My appt. with a Gastro Doctor is not until next year, I am malnutried.
Avatar n tn I am in my 30's and I have been having the same problem since I was about 17 and I'm wondering if anyone can help. I get a severe pain in the space in between my ribs and the "attack" can last anywhere from 20 minutes to 4 hours. I can only eat certain foods and "this thing" causes me not to gain weight. When I get the "attack", I get sooo weak and very nauseated and it feels as though I'm being slammed with a sledgehammer there until its over.
Avatar n tn I am thin to normal build and enzyme supplements assist with weight/muscle gain. Overall i am relatively fit and active but need to be moderate with this. Can I assume that as the enzymes change stool color that the issue is NOT in my liver or gall bladder but has something to do either with another allergy causing food or some lack in my own enzymes or stomach acids. ie. the enzymes could not compensate for a blocked bile duct.
Avatar n tn He asked him about his swollen neck and being tired all the time and weight gain but he never even checked the thyroid. We told him that his mom has hypothyroid and his dad has hyperthyroid. He said Nah, you don't have a thyroid problem, you just need to exercise. We have since switched docs.
Avatar n tn You know, I had symptoms similar to that plus all of those tests including a small bowel follow through, two colonoscopies, cat scans, etc. I'm just wondering if you had any unusual weight loss, weight gain....I would have your thyroid checked...as off as that sounds, if you have an autoimmune disorder affiliated with your thyroid, it can open you up to other indicators. I would also check for something called Yersinia which is sort of like food poisoning that mimicks Appencidicitis...
Avatar n tn I have been dealing with a bad body odor for two years now and edema which I never had before but the docotr says they are 2 seperate issues. She said my edema is related to my weight gain and the body odor is related to a GI tract issue and told me to start probiodics. I was just wondering if you don't mind what your symptoms were to determine it was a GI issue. Thanks in advance for any possible info you could give me.
Avatar n tn With regard to the issue as to why you developed pancreatitis and not someone else who drinks an equivalent amount, there is a variability in th eeffects of alcohol. Although genetic (hereditary) causes for pancreatitis have been identified, it is currently uncertain whether alcohol-induced pancreatitis has a genetic component. Smoking is bad but should not cause pancreatitis.
Avatar n tn Hi, I am wondering if cirrhosis could possibly be the or one of the causes of my unintentional weight loss. I would say I drink more than a "moderate" amount (3-4 beers/night usually) but less than "heavy alcohol abusers" (hard liquor, blackouts, etc.). I am only 29 years old and admit the amount of beer I drink is not healthy, but I am around people that drink a lot more than I do.
