Common Questions and Answers about Ovarian cysts in young children

Avatar n tn Benign dermoid ovarian cysts uncommonly cause symptoms in young girls. It is estimated that they constitute 0.35% of all tumors occurring in children of both sexes less than 15 years of age. Symptoms produced by the cysts may mimic other intra-abdominal disease, and in three of the four cases reported in this series the girls were initially considered to have either acute appendicitis or infection of the urinary tract. All three had a pelvic mass palpable per rectum.
Avatar f tn Hello, There are specific types of ovarian cancer that are more often found in children and adolescents that are different from those found in older women. In children and young girls ovarian cancer usually presents as an ovarian mass and typically they only report pain if the ovary twists and its blood supply is cut off. So, ovarian cancer in young people is overall uncommon, but definitely occurs. Your symptoms would be atypical.
Avatar f tn The ovarian cysts need further evaluation regarding their size and nature. Many of the cysts in young women respond to birth control pills or regress spontaneously. Hence it would be best to consult a gynaecologist for an evaluation. The answer is based on information provided. Exact advice is not possible without a proper examination and investigations. You are requested to consult your Doctor. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar f tn I had problems with ovarian cysts in my teens. My hormones were out of whack, my periods were unpredictable. My doctor put me on birth control pills for awhile to straighten things out but when I went off, the cysts came back. I married, wanted kids but a new doctor told me because I was so thin, my body wasn't working quite right. I gained 10 lbs, monitored my temperature and eventually had 3 children. So cysts and crazy periods does not necessarily mean you'll never have kids.
Avatar f tn I have been having lower abdomen problems (burning constantly) for about a year. I have been seeing a Gastroenterologist and have numerous test done and have been diagnosed with GERD and Barretts Esophagus and IBS. I take medication and watch what I eat but nothing helps. I had a CT Scan for these problems and it showed a cystic mass on my ovary so I had to go to my Gyn and had a Pelvic Sonogram. I have read that sometimes Ovarian Cancer can have the same symptoms as these other problems.
Avatar f tn I understand why she would be so worried, but plenty of women get cysts and go on to have healthy children. Even women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can conceive. Cysts are mostly benign, especially in young women. They rarely turn out to be cancerous and they can either be monitored for a few weeks to see if they can go away on their own or with the help of birth control pills (or other meds) or they can be surgically removed, depending on the size of the cystic mass.
Avatar n tn I am only 22 and i have two children. but for the last year i have had pain in my left ovary. well i have done an ultrasound and i wont know my results until the 17th of november. but the pain wont go away. i cant deal with it anymore. i just need to know if im to young to have a hystorectomy. i dont want anymore children. and i only want to have one surgery. can you answer these questions for me.
Avatar n tn I have a history of ovarian cysts as large as 10cm and have had 2 surgeries in the past with one surgery involving removal of my right ovary. After being infertile for 8 years, I did get preganant after that and had 2 children. For 8 years after, I have had no symptoms or pain. In May/June the pain/discomfort came back. Had ultrasound and had 2 cysts. One 5cm, the other one 3 cm. The small one was complex with 10 compartments and the doctor didn't like it.
Avatar n tn The doctors have found that I have two dermiod cysts about 6cm in diameter one on each ovary. They say that I have to have them removed and I am waiting for surgery. They said that the pain was caused by my ovary twisting on my right side. At first they thought that it was my apendix. I have a couple of questions: Would they cause me to feel tired all the time? and Will I still be able to have children? I am only 27 years old.
Avatar n tn Do keep in mind that over 95% of all cysts are benign so there is a more than likely chance that you just have a cyst. Take a look at the health pages (top right) and see if you have any of the additional cyst symptoms. Do go to your doctor and ask for a tranrsvaginal ultrasound and insist that he rule out ovarian cysts or cancer. Don't let him say that cysts don't cause pain or that you are too young. You know your body and fight to get this diagnosed. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I recently underwent ovarian drilling. Due to the cysts on my ovaries over the last few years, my ovaries have created a hard shell which stops ovulation. The ovarian drilling broke through that shell to allow me to ovulate again. The hard shell was caused by my eggs not being able to release correctly causing them to turn into cysts which then ruptured and hardened over my ovary. Birth control stops ovulation. If you are not ovulating, you won't have the cysts.
Avatar m tn It can also be controlled with the help of hormones and GnRH agonists which help in suppression of the disease. Ovarian cysts are also likely to recur. However you are too young to have a hysterectomy and should not even think of it. You may seek a second opinion from a gynaecologist. Take care and good luck.
Avatar n tn I have endometriosis, and I have had ovarian cysts since I was about 18 years old I go through pain every month. I currently have been in alot of pain and my PCP ordered a CT to check for kidney stones which I have had a problem with for about 10 years, In my results it should to small kidney stones, but also two large fluid dense cyst, one measuring 4.0 x 3.7 cm and the other 2.3 x 1.7 cm both on my right side. I just had my tubes tied in early sept and cyst removed during that time.
Avatar n tn I agree with Cindy that it is very unlikely to be Ovarian Cancer. However, young girls do get cysts. Actually cysts are very very common in young premenopausal women and 95 % benign. You may want to check the top right of this page; "Health Pages" . It has a lot of information about cysts . Of course we don't know if she even has cysts. And.. we're not Drs. here.. She really needs to be seen my by a Gyn. It could be one of many things.
Avatar f tn ve been slender my whole life even after or children. In just one year I gained more than 70 pounds and look as if I was nine months pregnant. Lots of G.I. symptoms. Weird pain in my legs and multiple episodes of chest pain. They found a hemorrhagic ovarian cyst on my left side and a complex ovarian cyst on my right side. They noted free fluid in the cul-de-sac. They found an endometrial mass. They found a small fibroid. They decided to use the watch and wait approach.
Avatar n tn Although it’s not known for sure whether benign ovarian cysts or polycystic ovaries develop into ovarian cancer, the vast majority of ovarian cysts appear to be unrelated. Women who have polycystic ovaries or ovarian cancer seldom have obvious symptoms early on. However, in both disorders, symptoms are noticed as the condition progresses. Because the ovaries are affected on both disorders, the some of the symptoms can be similar.
692998 tn?1257150368 Given your history, I would think the doctor would want to remove the cysts, but perhaps the ovary could stay in tact. Good luck to you! You are so young to have to face these decisions. I hope find some peace with this and have good supports. All the best....
Avatar n tn I think possibliy you mean ovarian cysts instead of ovarian fibriods as fibriods are assoicated with the Uterus and ovarian cysts are associated with the ovaries.
Avatar f tn I feel my pain tolerance is normal but the pain I am having in my abdomen with these cysts ranging in sizes, is unbearable most of the time. I am very confused as to what the right decision is and if there is anything else I can do?
Avatar n tn I had an u/s last week and was told I have a 5cm septated ovarian cyst on my left ovary. I have had 3 cysts in the last 6 months. They did a laproscopy in May and just found another cyst. From what I understand all these cysts were smaller and all but one burst on their own. I also just finished my last period and it was longer and much heavier than normal. I had to go into the hospital b/c I was bleeding extremely heavy. My doctor did the u/s b/c of the bleeding and found this cyst.
Avatar n tn Hi There, There are definitely situations where there are several possible approaches. For young women with pain and ovarian cysts, the most common approach is watchful waiting so as not to do unnecessary surgery. Commonly, one would consider adding a medical intervention to suppress ovarian cycling such as the birth control pill or even inducing artificial menopause with something like lupron. If the pain and cysts go away, then it is usually reasonable to continue on the pill.
Avatar m tn My concern is that she recently had a very sharp pain in her lower abdomen which lasted over an hour, and when she was examined by her OBGYN a couple of days later, she requested Tracie to have an ultrasound because she felt some cysts. The ultrasound showed 2 regular fluid filled cysts and 1 solid(complex as she called it) cyst that had ruptured that was full of blood.
474394 tn?1207672322 No complex does not mean cancer, it just means that there is solid matter inside the cyst. Most ovarian cysts are benign, over 90 percent and you are young which is also good. What is the follow up? When do you see the GYN again?
Avatar f tn I am 42 yrs and have 3 children, I had an ovarian cyst removed when I was pregnant with my first who is 15yrs. for the past 2 weeks i have been having pains around my left ovary.
