Avatar n tn Although it is possible to have ovarian cancer at a young age (I was 26 when I was diagnosed) having cysts does not mean you will get cancer. Many women have harmless ovarian cysts that never progress into anything... Having cysts does not mean you will have cancer. It is a good idea however, to keep an eye on them because even harmless cysts can grow and cause other issues. If you have concerns, you should definatley consult with your doctor about them...
Avatar f tn I find often that women who have chronic pelvic pain are talked into believing that 1-2 cm cysts are causing their problems. These cysts are normal and are almost always present on every woman's ovaries. I hope this is not what your doctors are talking about too! Your problem is a difficult one--chronic pain in the pelvic area, and believe it or not, often results from some sort of major physical/psychological trauma that becomes worse and worse over time.
Avatar n tn I agree with Cindy that it is very unlikely to be Ovarian Cancer. However, young girls do get cysts. Actually cysts are very very common in young premenopausal women and 95 % benign. You may want to check the top right of this page; "Health Pages" . It has a lot of information about cysts . Of course we don't know if she even has cysts. And.. we're not Drs. here.. She really needs to be seen my by a Gyn. It could be one of many things.
Avatar f tn When did you have the ultrasound done and did they do a TV/US, which is a trans-vaginal ultrasound that gives a better view than a regular abdominal ultrasound. Ovarian cysts are fairly common in young women and develop during ovulation. There is a lot of information about cyst at the top of the page on the cyst forum, click on heath pages to look up the cyst link.
Avatar f tn Hello, There are specific types of ovarian cancer that are more often found in children and adolescents that are different from those found in older women. In children and young girls ovarian cancer usually presents as an ovarian mass and typically they only report pain if the ovary twists and its blood supply is cut off. So, ovarian cancer in young people is overall uncommon, but definitely occurs. Your symptoms would be atypical.
474394 tn?1207672322 No complex does not mean cancer, it just means that there is solid matter inside the cyst. Most ovarian cysts are benign, over 90 percent and you are young which is also good. What is the follow up? When do you see the GYN again?
Avatar f tn You're not the only one to have had cysts on the ovaries at young age, the first time I was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst I was 13, and I kept getting cysts, they can be very painful at times, I personally was dignosed with PCOS at 15 and then at 16 I was diagnosed with endometriosis. I know there would be other ladies out there who are in very simular or the 'boat' as me.
Avatar n tn Hi, I'm so sorry your daughter is going through all this at such a young age. I don't know the answer to your question but you might try posting to the Ovarian Cyst forum - this is the Ovarian Cancer forum and a lot of the women on here didn't deal with cysts. Scroll down the page and you'll find the link to the ovcy forum on the right under "Related Communities".
Avatar n tn You might want to post this in the ovarian cyst community forum. I know of 2 women there with dermoids that will know more than myself.
Avatar f tn I agree with everyone else. I was told that ovarian cancer is extremely rare in younger women - it mostly affects menopausal women. I've had many cysts. I have other issues, but I was never told that the cysts themselves would affect my fertility. The cyst will probably go away on it's own, or they may put on you the birth control pill to make it shrink. I've had cysts as large as 10cm, and did not need surgery to remove them.
Avatar f tn However, I read a statistic that up to 14 percent of women post menopause develop ovarian cysts! Pretty big number even if not common. A hormonal imbalance can cause these cysts. However, they usually resolve between 8 and 12 weeks. If you still have symptoms past that, I'd talk to your doctor again. It is so fun being a woman. sigh.
Avatar f tn ve had simple cysts and passed them which seems like a very heavy period with bad cramps. Some women have many cysts and a disorder called polycystic ovarian syndrome. Ovarian cancer is often silent. It's a seeding cancer meaning tumors are very tiny and spread like sand blowing in the wind. They do grow but it takes a bit of time. There are often no symptoms for a long time but what they seem to appear most like are gastrointestinal issues.
Avatar n tn Gracious.. don't make the "leap" to Ovarian Cancer. It is really an uncommon disease in young women such as yourself. Your back pain is very likely caused by your constipation issues. I agree with nyc lady.. A gynecologist I'm sure will set your mind at ease. Sometimes it's not a great idea to go on the internet too much about your symptoms.. We all have a tendency to imagine we have everything that we read about. Speak to your mom about a Gyn. appt.. Good luck.
Avatar f tn At such a young age it can eb dermoid cyst which is a type of complex ovarian cyst and is the most common type and develops during the childbearing age. Complex ovarian cysts are generally benign. The risk of malignancy is generally higher among postmenopausal women. Most ovarian cysts disappear in 8 to 12 weeks. If they persist then before going in for surgery we can try the birth control pills also.
Avatar f tn I understand why she would be so worried, but plenty of women get cysts and go on to have healthy children. Even women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can conceive. Cysts are mostly benign, especially in young women. They rarely turn out to be cancerous and they can either be monitored for a few weeks to see if they can go away on their own or with the help of birth control pills (or other meds) or they can be surgically removed, depending on the size of the cystic mass.
Avatar m tn Hello, A complex ovarian cyst is less common than simple ovarian cyst. At such a young age it can be dermoid cyst which is a type of complex ovarian cyst and is the most common type and develops during the childbearing age. Complex ovarian cysts are generally benign. The risk of malignancy is generally higher among postmenopausal women. You should get a repeat ultrasound and CT scan done. A CA125 blood test should also be performed.
Avatar f tn ve heard of some women having only the cysts removed and leaving some or all of the ovaries intact. You could ask your doctor about that possibility or get another opinion. Some doctors are not as comfortable doing something that delicate. It's easier to pull the whole works. If you can keep some ovary, then you'll still have your hormones that can lead to a natural menopause. Are you nervous about HRT or about the surgery?
Avatar n tn s thought what they were seeing were multiple cysts, hence the name, but in fact its all the extra follicles that cause PCOS. Some women get cysts from their follicles not being absorbed back into their bodies after not maturing and non-ovulating follicles turning cystic, but cysts dont deem the name, the follicles do. PCOS generally occurs at the time of puberty. Thus, virgins and non-virgins a like can have this condition.
Avatar f tn The size of the cyst may necessitate the removal of your ovary but some surgeons with good cystectomy skills can remove large cysts without removing all ovarian tissue. That may be worth pursuing since you're so young. Removal of even one ovary can permanently disrupt ovarian hormone function impairing not only fertility but many aspects of health since ovarian hormones are essential to good health. I hope surgery goes well! Please post with an update.

Avatar f tn Can I develop cancer from these? I know ovarian cancer is almost unheard of in anyone under forty, but dermoid cysts are also rare in anyone under twenty. I'm not really that worried about this, but if someone could tell me some more about the difference between dermoids and cancer it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
