Nitroglycerin for heart failure

Common Questions and Answers about Nitroglycerin for heart failure

nitrostat

Avatar m tn It's a medication used for Heart Failure Patients......Comes in pill form or spray......My husband uses it & I'm very careful to watch that it is never around the dogs! Just in Case!!!!
Avatar n tn Yes I would suggest a left heart catheterization to further evaluate you for the presence of severe obstructive atherosclerosis. Apart from this you should be on maximal medical therapy including beta blockers, ace inhibitors, aspirin and plavix as well as a statin. Is you heart function preserved after the heart attack? It is possible that your shortness of breath is secondary to systolic dysfunction and not only pneumonia.
572651 tn?1530999357 My bp is also low - averages 90/60 but the nitro is for the angina which is not bp related. I find it really knocks me out for a while after I get over the headache ..... If my pain is really MS related and not cardio related, I'm wondering what the nitro is really doing.............
Avatar m tn Xrays and ekg were done and the vet thinks ity may be congestive heart failure. There is a chance it is heartworm, so they are doing that test as well. If the heartworm was negative, they were going to start her on nitroglycerin and lasix to bring her heart rate down. They suggested I take to to an emergency clinic tonight so she can be seen by a cardiologist tomorrow. If they do administer the nitro and lasix, what more can the E.C. do overnight while waiting for the cardiologist.
Avatar n tn I was diagnose with clogged arteries over a year ago. I even had a stent put in because one of my arteries was ecluded. I still had stable angina every time I did some for of cardio activity or is I ate something with sodium. I started using Nitroglycerin patches and even have the pills just in case my angina episode occurs. I had a date and I read online that you can't take viagra and any nitrates cause it can drop your blood pressure really low.

805943 tn?1238093647 Nitro can help some forms of esophageal spasm. Nitroglycerin is used with esophageal spasms (GERD). It is the one non heart related illness that nitroglycerin works in. However, that doesn't rule out a concomitant heart condition. Nitroglycerin is a vasodilator not only for your heart vessels but for the vascular system which then subsquently lowers your blood pressure. It even dilates the vessels in the brain which then usually gives the side effect of the headache also.
Avatar m tn Nitrate Medications for heart disease - The combination of vitamin C with nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, or isosorbide mononitrate reduces the occurrence of nitrate tolerance. Nitrate tolerance is when the body builds up a tolerance to the medicine so that it no longer has its desired effect. People taking nitrate-containing medications generally follow a 12 hours on, 12 hours off schedule to avoid this tolerance.
Avatar m tn I'm sure you are very worried. Let me try to help.............a bit. First of all - I have experienced Pulmonary Edema on 2 serious occasions in '08. Both - life threatening..........the second - so life threatening that I experienced Respiratory Failure at my local hospital and had to be airlifted to the central hospital here in Maine. I was put in a coma and was not expected to live. I am a 58 y.o. male with an Ejection Fraction of 10-15% since '03.
Avatar n tn The goal of treatment is to control chest pain and to prevent heart attack. The pain is relieved by a medicine called nitroglycerin (dilates coronary vessels). You have been prescribed norvasc and that should relieve any chest pains. Norvasc is in a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. It dilates blood vessels and slows the heart to reduce blood pressure and the pain of angina. Calcium channel blockers may be needed long term. Medications may also include beta-blockers.
Avatar f tn If you miss a dose of Nitroglycerin Patch, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once. When used for long periods of time without a break, some people develop a physical need to continue taking Nitroglycerin Patch. This is known as physical DEPENDENCE. Do not suddenly stop taking Nitroglycerin Patch without your doctor's approval.
Avatar n tn ed is correct nitro dilates vessels. I take a nitrate (isosorbide) for more than 6 years 3 times before going to gym for workout. My blood pressure does not drop between intervals...in fact I was told to have intervals of nitrate free period. It is true, nitro dilates the coronary vessels and prevents angina (chest pain). The patch should only be worn for up to 12 to 14 hours a day, or as directed by your doctor, but continued use with no interruptions can cause a tolerance for drug....
Avatar m tn s obviously not controlling your blood pressure, so I personally would not see any reason for taking it. I was on Lopressor for blood pressure control for several years and was in the same situation as yourself -- my heart rate was too low, and my blood pressure was still too high. But why are you on the nitro patch?
Avatar n tn In one way he was fortunate because his heart attacks were considered mild, only little bits of damage to the heart each time. But in the end he still ended up with congestive heart failure. Not an easy way to live. Plus he never changed his lifestyle, still ate terrible food and smoked and rebelled against taking the medications the doctors prescribed. So although I know some things about heart attacks, I couldn't accurately or completely answer all your questions.
Avatar m tn During a recent hospital stay where I was being treated for the Congestive Heart Failure and hypertension, I was put on fairly high doses of nitroglycerin and hydralazine and lasix. At some point during the stay I started having these unbelievably strong heart palpatations. My heart rate began to exceed 90 beats per minute and would drum like a mighty army in my head.
Avatar n tn A deficit of blood flow to that area could cause right-side heart failure causing less than normal blood flow to the lungs for oxygenation and thereby reducing blood/oxygen to the circulation system. If the cardiac output is low, that could cause your symptoms. Worst case scenario if it is heart related. An EF60-65% is the amount of blood in the left ventricle chamber that is pumped into circulation with each heartbeat....normal is 50 to 70%. You have strong heart contractions!
712042 tn?1254569209 Organic nitrates have been used widely in the treatment of both coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. The most commonly used organic nitrates are nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, and isosorbide-5-mononitrate (1). The organic nitrates are prodrugs, undergoing a biotransformation process that is generally believed to yield NO or some NO adjunct as their vasoactive metabolite.
Avatar n tn You should talk to your doctor as you may be a good candidate for a low dose nitroglycerin patch which opens the coronary vessels to increase oxygen supply to the heart. How are you currently managing your COPD? What medications and inhalers are you using? are you on home O2?
Avatar n tn Nitroglycerin can also relieve esophageal spasm, it's not reliable for differential diagnosis of cardiac vs GI origin for chest pain. I've been through this recently myself and don't have any answers either. Nitro (sublingual) sometimes helped and sometimes didn't. Then on Friday I had a stress echo, my second in six months, again definitely negative. I'm also on Prevacid so my cardiologist doesn't think it's GI related but he also doesn't think it's cardiac.
Avatar f tn As anyone had the stress test the two parts myacardial perfusion scan after 4 weeks the cardiologist sent a prescription for asprin , isosirbide monitrate, amlodipine antrovastatin said my scan was 15% what does this mean is this not too bad medium or high risk don’t see him for another 2 months sldo can I have a few drinks on them as Iv not had a drink I just wondered people on these meds if they have a few drinks now n again thank you in advance x
Avatar m tn What would happen if you rubbed pure nitroglycerin on your skin? I'd like to know the symptoms on and below the skin. I know that nitroglycerin is used for anginas, but I also know that it's generally mixed with something else, so I'm curious about how well pure nitroglycerin would work and what it would do. And if you had a vial of pure nitroglycerin, what could you mix it with to be able to use it as ointment?
Avatar f tn Being short of breath with a cardiovascular medical condition can be a very serious problem and you should see your doctor for that issue to rule out any heart failure. It is unfortunate that some cardiologist will quickly implant a stent when the option of medication can be the effective remedy...now you have a stent and take the medication that you should have been able to avoid.
