Avatar n tn In fact, the so called pneumonia you had could have been congestive heart failure all along and not a bacterial pneumonia at all.
572651 tn?1530999357 I have nitroquik - sublingual nitroglycerin - to take if I have angina pains - this morning about 5 am I was miserable and couldn't tell if it was heart or ms symptoms and I took one. As always it stopped my discomfort, depressed my already low blood pressure and I went to sleep for about 3 hours. I've used nitroquik for the past 3 months or so and it always stops the pain and gives me relief within minutes.
Avatar m tn Xrays and ekg were done and the vet thinks ity may be congestive heart failure. There is a chance it is heartworm, so they are doing that test as well. If the heartworm was negative, they were going to start her on nitroglycerin and lasix to bring her heart rate down. They suggested I take to to an emergency clinic tonight so she can be seen by a cardiologist tomorrow. If they do administer the nitro and lasix, what more can the E.C. do overnight while waiting for the cardiologist.

805943 tn?1238093647 Nitro can help some forms of esophageal spasm. Nitroglycerin is used with esophageal spasms (GERD). It is the one non heart related illness that nitroglycerin works in. However, that doesn't rule out a concomitant heart condition. Nitroglycerin is a vasodilator not only for your heart vessels but for the vascular system which then subsquently lowers your blood pressure. It even dilates the vessels in the brain which then usually gives the side effect of the headache also.
Avatar n tn If you are taking a nitroglycerin preparation, Viagra is NOT allowed. Do not use Viagra within 24 hours of the test. Nitro-glycerine (sometimes given during a stress test) may interact with Viagra, resulting in a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Patients who are taking medications for lung problems, diabetes mellitus, congestive heart failure and Persantine may need to alter their medications.
Avatar m tn I'm sure you are very worried. Let me try to help.............a bit. First of all - I have experienced Pulmonary Edema on 2 serious occasions in '08. Both - life threatening..........the second - so life threatening that I experienced Respiratory Failure at my local hospital and had to be airlifted to the central hospital here in Maine. I was put in a coma and was not expected to live. I am a 58 y.o. male with an Ejection Fraction of 10-15% since '03.
Avatar n tn The goal of treatment is to control chest pain and to prevent heart attack. The pain is relieved by a medicine called nitroglycerin (dilates coronary vessels). You have been prescribed norvasc and that should relieve any chest pains. Norvasc is in a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. It dilates blood vessels and slows the heart to reduce blood pressure and the pain of angina. Calcium channel blockers may be needed long term. Medications may also include beta-blockers.
1098952 tn?1270309713 If a person with HCM were to take nitroglycerin, the symptoms would worsen and the nitroglycerin could even cause a catastrophic deterioration in the person's condition".
Avatar f tn If you miss a dose of Nitroglycerin Patch, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once. When used for long periods of time without a break, some people develop a physical need to continue taking Nitroglycerin Patch. This is known as physical DEPENDENCE. Do not suddenly stop taking Nitroglycerin Patch without your doctor's approval.
Avatar m tn My husband is 76 years old. He had a heart catherization recently and was found to have several blocked arteries. He had 2 stents put in 2011. Are the risks too great for my husband at his age with insulin dependent diabetes for 19 years to have open heart surgery? His cardiologist so far has put him a medication regimen to try to help with his blocked arteries. The only sympton he has had with the placing of the stents was Chest Pressure, no other symptoms.
Avatar m tn Nitrate Medications for heart disease - The combination of vitamin C with nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, or isosorbide mononitrate reduces the occurrence of nitrate tolerance. Nitrate tolerance is when the body builds up a tolerance to the medicine so that it no longer has its desired effect. People taking nitrate-containing medications generally follow a 12 hours on, 12 hours off schedule to avoid this tolerance.
Avatar n tn I still had stable angina every time I did some for of cardio activity or is I ate something with sodium. I started using Nitroglycerin patches and even have the pills just in case my angina episode occurs. I had a date and I read online that you can't take viagra and any nitrates cause it can drop your blood pressure really low. So I stopped using my nitroglycerin for about 48 hours so I can take the Viagra.
Avatar n tn Thanks for your input...my bp is slowly dropping now, so I guess the nitro is finally kicking in.
Avatar m tn ve had a heart attack, if you have angina, if you have an arrhythmia, or if you have congestive heart failure, there may be another reason besides blood pressure control for your doctor to prescribe Lopressor. Under those circumstances, maybe the Lopressor dosage could at least be reduced; I don't know, but I would at least talk to the doctor about it. Anyway, that's where I would start, in my discussions with the doctor: the Lopressor.
Avatar n tn In one way he was fortunate because his heart attacks were considered mild, only little bits of damage to the heart each time. But in the end he still ended up with congestive heart failure. Not an easy way to live. Plus he never changed his lifestyle, still ate terrible food and smoked and rebelled against taking the medications the doctors prescribed. So although I know some things about heart attacks, I couldn't accurately or completely answer all your questions.
Avatar m tn During a recent hospital stay where I was being treated for the Congestive Heart Failure and hypertension, I was put on fairly high doses of nitroglycerin and hydralazine and lasix. At some point during the stay I started having these unbelievably strong heart palpatations. My heart rate began to exceed 90 beats per minute and would drum like a mighty army in my head.
Avatar n tn normal is 50 to 70%. You have strong heart contractions! An advanced right-side heart failure will/could eventually cause the left-side to fail and your EF would go to below 29% We all could keel over at any time,so its not very productive to think in those terms.
712042 tn?1254569209 Organic nitrates have been used widely in the treatment of both coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. The most commonly used organic nitrates are nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, and isosorbide-5-mononitrate (1). The organic nitrates are prodrugs, undergoing a biotransformation process that is generally believed to yield NO or some NO adjunct as their vasoactive metabolite.
Avatar n tn It does sounds like you were experiencing angina, which is chest pain that occurs when the heart muscle demands more oxygen than what is being supplied. Common caused of angina are narrowed coronary arteries and hypoxia (very low blood oxygen caused by respiratory disorders and/anemia). You should talk to your doctor as you may be a good candidate for a low dose nitroglycerin patch which opens the coronary vessels to increase oxygen supply to the heart.
Avatar n tn I was under enormous stress when the pains started and the fear that it was cardiac in origin added to it. I had the nitroglycerin sublingual tablets. I took them, sometimes they helped, other times they didn't. To this day I have no definitive answer as to the cause of my pains, but they seem to have subsided for the past 6-7 months. Try the nitro and see if it helps. My guess is that it won't help indigestion, but would if it was due to vasospasm or other cardiac cause.
Avatar f tn I have the same thing but 6%. I was prescribed the same things. This all just happened within the last week for me. The Cardiologist said that mine is like a 6% chance of having a heart attack right now. So, I'm assuming yours is 15%. I'm hesitant on taking the Amlodipine because it lowers blood pressure and mine is already low. As far as drinking, I wouldn't advise it especially with the Isosorbide, that is basically Nitroglycerin in a daily form.
Avatar m tn The pain is still there together with light headedness and goes away if I take nitroglycerin (thought I know that nitroglycerin would relieve essentially any kind of chest pain). The cardiologist saw me after the angiogram and told me that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my heart and I should start working out. I tried some walking at pace this morning and started getting pain in chest radiating to arm with shortness of breath. I stopped and after taking some rest it went away.
