I have been taking 1000 mg Niaspan for six years to treat genetically high Lipoprotein(a). Now my physician wants to stop the Niaspan and begin a very small dose of Crestor. His reason is due to a recent study indicating Niaspan as a risk of causing bleeding and/or infection problems. I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan.
My liver naturally overproduces for some reason, and no specialist can seem to figure out why after all these years. Once I was started on the 2000 mg of Niaspan, along with the 60 mg of Zocor, my over-all cholesterol levels have ranged from 90 to 110 (which is where both my GP and my cardiologist want it to be). I can't remember my other levels at the moment..too many numbers to remember along with my T4 and T3 levels.
I recently got my blood tests back and am not sure if I have "Heart Disease" in the classical meaning of the phrase or just a bad reading or "Bad Numbers" which need to be addressed. Can someone please clarify this for me? First off, I'm a recently turned 60 year old man who used to be an athletic type during my younger years and over the years let it all go down the drain it seems.
My MD & I have been trying for about 5 years now to raise my HDL (I have family history w/father dying of heart attack at 48) .Niaspan only raised it nominally, & now he wants to try Crestor.....Are statins good for raising HDL?...If one can keep their LDL down low enough say under 80, is HDL still significant?....Except for HDL, my other numbers are good...I'm non-smoker, & ideal weight, & active.....
Metroprolol 25MG to control tachycardia, Lipitor 20MG, Niaspan 1000MG, Nexium 40MG, 81MG aspirin every three days because once a day caused petechia, Krill oil, Depakote 125MG and Klonopin .5MG at bedtime. Had calcium score done a few months ago and score went from 20 (two years ago) to 19 (now). I seem to be doing a good job except for the HDL. I have been doing some research and have read that Metroprolol can lower HDL.
I assume you have a cholesterol issue. Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.
I have searched the literature and have not found any articles linking Niaspan with any form of cancer. Niaspan is just niacin, one of the B vitamins, and as far as I can tell, is not cancerous in the dose given in Niaspan. As for your other question whether a five year study can demonstrate a drug-cancer connection, it would depend partly on the study design. The strength of the association between cause (the drug) and effect (cancer) would depend on how the evidence is gathered.
was placed on lisinopril 10mg, effient 10 mg, lipitor 40 mg, toporol 25mg, niaspan 1000, asprin 325mg. Starting 9/7/2010 went through 2 months of cardiac rehab cardiologist took me off lisinopril and did not replace it, at rehab I buildt up to 7.7 METS for 62 minutes a day, with avg heart rate at 130. 10/15/2010 Taken off effient and back on plavix due to severe bruising over 80% of my body, I looked like a blue berry.
I'm new here and want to find out what people think about the new research on Niaspan. I can't figure out how to filter my search results by date so that I just get recent results.
He knows I eat healthy but that I have eliminated temporarily (for last 6 months) exercise due to scare associated possible lung cancer diagnosis (mentally I just do not want to work out - yet). He has recommended Niaspan (500). I can find zero information on the web about reducing CRP with any prescription drug. Do other doctors look to reduce CRP levels w/Niaspan - a drug designed to improve CHOL and Triglyceride levels?
Well, it depends on what kind of medication you are on. I am taking Niaspan for cholestoral and these are the side effects of it. When your body have enough of these vitamins, it flushes out of body like this. It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.
t help me, though. I was able to raise my HDL from 32 to 50 with 2000 mg of Niaspan. The niaspan also lowered my triglycerides and my LDL as well.
It is interesting that your triglycerides are going up. Are you eating things like bread? Last year, I had to cut back on my carbs to lower my blood sugar. It also lower my triglycerides and I also lost weight as well (30 lbs over 9 months). I had to avoid certain vegetables like corn and potatoes.
Also I take allergy medication like zyrtec (1 a day). and 2000 mg of Niaspan. Does any of these have any effect on antibody test.
I was a bit relaxed after I got my result but tensed once again after reading your post on cortisone injection, i read a similar one on thebody stating heavy does of cortisone can effect the antibody production. Does cortisone suppress the immune system which delays the production of antibodies?

) I also have Mg glycinate powder (said to be the least laxative form) , and take at least 300 mg / day. When my sudden onset HTN started, I also began a headache that lasted for three weeks straight. Within 24 hrs of starting the magnesium, the headache was gone - but this other feeling in my head still remains.
Or you could even try a bath in epsom salts. Sounds wacky but it does seem to work as you absorb the Mg sulfate through the skin.

Don't wait for your cardiologist, if the pains return and they feel the same as when you had your MI only milder, GO TO THE ER. Why would you take a chance, you've been there before and it simply is not worth the risk.

In an effort to increase my HDL, I take Niaspan & Zocor.....Recently my MD upped the Zocor from 5mgl. to 10mgl....
Last couple weeks, have had more trouble sleeping, usually waking up after a dream (not nightmares, but somewhat vivid dreams)...I've checked out few sites, & saw that statins can cause sleep problems....Have others here had sleep problems while taking a statin?........
Currently I am on Tarka, Niaspan and Coumadin for HTN and atrial fibrillation. On 1/11, Sectral was added to my cardiac med profile to aid in arrythmia control.
On 1/26 I started Lovenox prior to a colonoscopy. These are the only two meds changed, with all other meds longstanding.
On 12/1 I had a complete metabolic profile drawn for a routine endocrinology follow up and LFTs then were ALT 17 and AST 18.
It goes away after about 20 minutes but really was strange..Told my doctor about it and she said its a side effect of Niaspan a cholesterol reducing drug. I hope this helps some of you.
I am a 44 year old male and take 2000mg of Niaspan every day and my HDL is up from 29 to 43..my LDL is down to 66 and my trigs are 82. Niacin plus a good diet can give you good numbers. I already had heart disease before I got serious so I know how it feels to have a time bomb in your heart and I am doing my best to reverse or stop the plaque from progressing.
I have been taking 2000mg Niaspan daily for the last 18months, helping to raise it from 25 to 30. I run about 9miles a week, work out 3-4X at the gym each week, and drink a glass of red wine every night. I eat nuts every day, take Omega3, and rarely eat red meat - subscribing to a low cholesterol diet. Weight is 185 at 6'3", age 50. LDL is always pretty low - most recently 66.
Finally found a great doctor who decided to try me on dual meds, that being Zocor, still at 60 mg daily, and 2000 mg niaspan. My levels have all been in the excellent range since.
To mmmhady: When getting your CPK levels, what levels are they actually testing you for? There are three CPK levels that they test: Heart, skeletal muscular system, and brain. Have you been diagnosed with a history of rhabdomyolysis?
