I tried Lyrica, to see if it would work better, but it made me feel really stupid and spacy and I did gain weight with it. Went back to gabapentin (Neurontin) and all is fine. I only take 900 mg day, sometimes 1000 so am on a small dose, but it does the trick for nerve pain.

I take gabapentin as well and am in the same boat as Ess when it comes to lyrica. I look at it and gain weight as well as get stupid. ;) I've had no issues with gabapentin and it works terrifically to turn off the horrible nerve pain in my hands and legs, and feet. I cannot imagine living without this drug! I've been on it now for 4 plus years. There is a sweet spot, the dose at which the drug is totally effective and that dose is totally individual.

I am on Gabapentin 300mg 2 a day, I have had weight gain since being on them, I have gained 15 lbs in 2 months time. I am sitting here thinking if he ups my meds like he wants to the side effect of weight gain will only get worse. I talked to the people where I get Gabapentin and they said that that side effect don't go away and if the dose is inceased it will only get worse so if the med isn't helping me there are other options.

I take gabapentin for fibromyalgia. Only 300 mg at bedtime. Otherwise it makes me so tired and depressed during the day. When I was first prescribed it, I looked it up on the computer. Several people talked about abusing it. Don't know why tho.

Gabapentin and Lyrica are in the same class of anti-convulsants and have similar actions. However their side-effect profiles may differ somewhat. If you are finding that the side-effects with gabapentin are tolerable then it would probably be best to increase the dose under doctor's advice. There is a long way upwards that you may go with the dose before reaching the upper limit, as Jason80 points out.

I used Lyrica and it really helped but it does makeyou gain weight. I think they are basically used for the same ting and it really did help. Good luck Fire I know you can do this!

t have the medical knowledge to tell you the exact equivalent. However, you are on a relatively low dose of gabapentin (Neurontin). Max dose of that per day is 3600 mg. Max dose (per manufacturer) of Lyrica is 600 mg/day. If you have few side effects from Neurontin, you might ask your doctor just to increase that, before switching.

Me, I have nausea that bothers me a lot. The weight gain you ask about is one of the side effects, as are the other problems you are having. I've been taking it for two years, and I also started out on Lyrica, but becuz of cost I had to switch. Neurontin has only been around for about 15 years, so for at least for that length of time you're good. The only normal wierdness I know about is withdrawals, so you have to taper slowly over several weeks' time.

good luck to you with the neurontin and the shot. the lyrica was awful as far as the weight gain. Does neurontin have that effect as well? I am watching my girlish figure and don't want anything that is gonna blow me up....

I have been on cymbalta... was wonderful except for the excessive sweating, it worked great for the pain... I am currently on Neurontin 600, 600 & 900mg (2100mg daily), celebrex 200mg twice a day, it's not as good as the cymbalta but after a year I couldn't handle the sweating anymore. I have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis along with PPMS. Haven't tried Lyrica... afraid of the weight gain I'm currently at weight watchers and would prefer something that causes weight lose.

I have been on lyrica for a while now. My doctor has increased the doseage and I am gaining weight in my stomach like crazy. Not sure what is going on with that, I don't want to gain any more weight than I am already carrying, which is alot. Next week I will be starting a heart healthy diet, my mom lives with me and has been seeing a cardiologist, so I figure that may help. If the diet doesn't help I may have to stop taking the lyrica.

For those of you who take Gabapentin (Neurontin): Just curious what side effects you have experienced (and at what dosage), and how long they lasted? I just started this last weekend, 300mg once a day at bedtime. Neurontin seems to be a safer choice depending on dosage. I have taken up to 1500mg daily for a nerve injury and other then weight gain I noticed no other symptoms. It wasn't as effective at the higher dose for the type of injury I have. Lyrica seemed to work better but on at lower doses. For migraines, ask you Doctor if he/she would consider changing to Topamax. It's in the same family as Neurontin but my wife's Neurologist thinks it is a superior drug.

However, some medications used for symptom relief can cause weight gain, specifically Neurontin (Gabapentin) and Lyrica (Pregabalin). Steroids can have this effect as well. Many MSers put on weight because fatigue makes them lethargic, so they easily can become couch potatoes. That doesn't sound like you, though, as you get an admirable amount of exercise. I suggest you check with your primary doctor about potential causes of your weight issues.

For me it helped because Neurontin started to cause me bad hair loss and awful fluid retention and thus weight gain and made my whole body heat up like it was being cooked from the inside out.But yes I still loved the way it made me feel.I would mess up constantly and get down on myself but just expect that you will mess up sometimes but dont wallow too long and try to get right back on track.

Help! Can anyone suggest a med for severe nerve pain that doesn't cause weight gain, so I can go to my GP armed with a suggestion? I've been on Doxepin for the last couple of months and before that another couple of tricyclic antidepressants for the pain and have gained so much weight that I am more depressed about the weight gain than having MS.

As far as I am aware anticonvulsants of the gabapentoid class (gabapentin and pregabalin, for example) are known to cause weight gain and hair loss in some people. It's listed in their side effect profile. I use clippers with a number 2 comb to disguise the hair loss...

I've been on 1800 mg neurontin for 4-5yrs now...but its no longer working as it once did..and I have been using 2100mg (on my own) for a few weeks now but think I need even higher dose...so will mention to my doctor when I get rx refilled. t seem to be working for me, and though she has no idea how to deal with my unusual situation, she was inclined to try either Neurontin/Gabapentin or Depakote. I was pretty taken aback, and we ended with me going to 40mg of Celexa until I see her next month. I've heard a lot that gabapentin and like meds often cause more anxiety, and I admit knowing nothing about Depakote because my issue has never called for an anti-psychotic. So, folks, any thoughts here?

I was givin a bottle of Lyrica.... They're 75mg pills. I do not suffer from pain or phybromyalgia or anything it's for. I abuse them. I don't get the sleepy nodding off from it though. Gives me energy, not really run around the block energy but keeps me awake all night long. People say it makes me more chill, laid back. It makes me feel like I'm floating on happy clouds. Sometimes I feel off balanced or a little tipsy. But it's really fun.

I am on Duragesic pain patch, Ultram, Lortab 10 mg, and Lyrica 200mg. I noticed weight gain and swelling in my legs and feet with Lyrica and wanted to know if Topamax could replace Lyrica.
