neurontin

1637739 tn?1371688706 Re: meds and weight gain, I'm on 3600mg of Neurontin per day and it hasn't caused increased appetite or weight gain. Lyrica did - it stimulated my appetite and I ate like a pig and had to stop it. Amitriptyline did cause some weight gain initially, between 5 - 20 lbs but after a while it eased off. The first few doses of Cesamet also made me really hungry but that seems to have stopped, and I only take it on nights when my pain is really bad.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the responses. I will check out the Pain Management Forum. Just my luck that neurontin makes you gain weight. My mobility is limited right now and I've gone from going to the gym 5 days a week to walking for 10 minutes at a time. Any time a medicine has a weight gain side affect . . . I GAIN!!!! Thanks again . . .
Avatar f tn Since you have chronic pain your likely not getting around physically as much as you were before which can lead to the weight gain. The weight gain can cause an increase in your pain because your bones are having to bear that load. Also some antidepressants can cause weight gain as a side effect. I'm unsure about lyrica. I too take neurontin as well as a narcotic pain med called Norco. I find that neurontin helps with my pain almost as much as the norco.
Avatar f tn t recall why) and I called my pharmacist because she told me about the huge side effect of weight gain with Lyrica, it's almost guaranteed, and my pharmacist told me that Lyrica is a dirivative of Neurontin, which has a much lower incidence of weight gain, and they are nearly the same medications. I then decided to go on Neurontin instead. I've been on it nearly a month now and it's made a huge difference for me, my nerve pain has been minimized.
675329 tn?1297288378 I used to take Neurontin for nerve pain, and weight gain was a problem for me too. I don't take anymore thank God.
959341 tn?1246884689 Whether a craving for sweets is a side-effect, I doubt the drug maker would admit it. But I did gain weight. And weight gain is my worst enemy. I have fought being over-weight most of the last 40 years. Neurontin works well for some people, so do anti-seizure medications. It is thought that msucle spasms and nerve pain are like having mini-muscle seizures. At least that is what I was told by a Neuro at UVA in Virginia. I now take Baclofen for muscle spasms at night before I go to bed.
1855076 tn?1337115303 I take gabapentin for fibromyalgia. Only 300 mg at bedtime. Otherwise it makes me so tired and depressed during the day. When I was first prescribed it, I looked it up on the computer. Several people talked about abusing it. Don't know why tho.
Avatar n tn I've had migraines with Aura's since I was eighteen. In my thirties they became more frequent right before my periods and vomiting began. I've been on several different therapies with short term success. My neurologist recently subscribed neurontin -- 300 mg 3x per day. The medication is really helping -- but I've experienced tremendous weight gain. What alternatives could I explore that would have similar success without the weight gain?
Avatar f tn Thank you so much for answering. My doc is out of town this week. Seems I always need her when she is off playing. I did talk to an on call doc, who doesn't know me, and two pharmacists who also don"t know me and got three different answers!!! I can only conclude that I should not need medical help during the holidays!! :) Why is it docs don't let you know about the weight gain associated with drugs until after the fact?
559187 tn?1330782856 I had no side effects, incl weight gain, from the Neurontin. Too soon to tell with amitriptyline; so far the only side effect from that is the drowsiness. My GP said weight gain and dry mouth are also common, but this hasn't happened to me thus far. She said the weight gain comes from increased appetite. I have not tried Lyrica. My neuro was reluctant to go that route first, becasuse of the side effects, although I did not ask him which ones concerned him most. I'm curious...
648910 tn?1290663083 Lyrica is typically much worse for weight gain! I gain 25lbs in 2 months on it, so went back to neurontin, which I can tolerate without gaining weight. But it is marvelous for nerve pain. If you follow a STRICT low-carb diet, you can hold off the weight gain. At least that is what I have been told. Lyrica is wonderful for nerv e pain/neuropathy, at least it was for me. Good luck.
378810 tn?1201987233 t like the weight gain, the neurontin is the only thing that prevented me from killing myself last year because of the TN pain I was having.
1159737 tn?1286517257 t find the other, but it has helped a little bit. They also said to take the Neurontin, but I am worried about the weight gain. How many of you gained weight on it? The doctor also said they are noticing more people gaining weight off of Lyrica than the neurontin. Recovery IS SLOW - but I am getting there. I def feel different, and I am glad I had the surgery.
1187071 tn?1279369698 I stopped the neurontin because of the weight gain. That is the first question I ask with every medication. Otherwise, it is like a dominoes effect. I take med, I gain weight, I get depressed, I hurt more. I had to stop the roller coaster. I have also tried Lyrica and Cymbalta. The Cymbalta made me sweat profusely. So, they took me off of that medication. I am now trying Savalla, starting today. So, I will see how this works. Good luck to you.
Avatar f tn When you're dealing with ACs like Depakote and Neurontin, the weight gain can be attributed to the increase in appetite and not necessarily metabolic issue. I had a shrink that wouldn't give me Neurontin, even though it's a GREAT mood stabilizer for me because he felt the weight gain was going to be an issue. I am on a good size dose of it now and have actually lost 60lbs. It does boost my appetite, but I just adhere to the 'put the fork down' diet.
1831849 tn?1383228392 If I so much as look at Lyrica, on the other hand, I gain weight. Each person is different, though, and what works for one can easily be a non-starter for someone else. Some people have side effects, some have different side effects, many have none at all. Both drugs have to be tapered upwards gradually, and decreased gradually when coming off. Another thing to remember is that the lowest dose of a drug is likely to be effective for only a relative few.
420308 tn?1203041262 I feel better than I ever had in my life, but the only problem I have now is excessive weight gain--about 30 lbs. I am currently 5'7 and 188 lbs. I want to get my weight down to 160 lbs. As a New Year's resolution I have been working out between 30-60 minutes 5 days a week combining cardio and weight training. I have also adjusted my diet by eating more fruits and vegetables and whole grains. I have lost about 5 lbs. in 6 weeks.
Avatar m tn Neurontin seems to be a safer choice depending on dosage. I have taken up to 1500mg daily for a nerve injury and other then weight gain I noticed no other symptoms. It wasn't as effective at the higher dose for the type of injury I have. Lyrica seemed to work better but on at lower doses. For migraines, ask you Doctor if he/she would consider changing to Topamax. It's in the same family as Neurontin but my wife's Neurologist thinks it is a superior drug.
Avatar f tn Neurontin caused weight gain and I became allergic to lyrica as well as gaining weight. In the past two years after stopping lyrica due to laryngeal edema, I lost 20 lbs. I also started a gluten free diet and dropped another 30lbs. I do much better without that extra 50 lbs. I'd rather deal with the pain than deal with excessive weight. I'd like them to concentrate on the cause of the neuropathy, nothing they have made any attempt at.
Avatar f tn good luck to you with the neurontin and the shot. the lyrica was awful as far as the weight gain. Does neurontin have that effect as well? I am watching my girlish figure and don't want anything that is gonna blow me up....
1396846 tn?1332459510 I have been on lyrica for a while now. My doctor has increased the doseage and I am gaining weight in my stomach like crazy. Not sure what is going on with that, I don't want to gain any more weight than I am already carrying, which is alot. Next week I will be starting a heart healthy diet, my mom lives with me and has been seeing a cardiologist, so I figure that may help. If the diet doesn't help I may have to stop taking the lyrica.
