Neurontin and shingles

Common Questions and Answers about Neurontin and shingles

neurontin

Avatar f tn Neurotin is chemically similar to the drug Lyrica. Neurontin is also used to treat nerve pain caused by herpes virus or shingles. It can interact with hydrocodone, morphine or naproxen and others. I have taken it but it was not successful in treating my sciatic pain. However others have had relief. I hope this bit of information helps you. If you have additional questions please continue to post. Take care of yourself and let us know how you are doing.
Avatar n tn I am a 52 year old female who had shingles in the groin area on my left leg, and on my left thigh about 8 months ago. I had little pain at the time of the outbreak however, I developed pain on the same side as the shingles outbreak, like electric shocks, which shoot from my groin to my knee. My knee will burn with prolonged standing, and after sitting for prolonged periods, I can hardly walk when I get up.
Avatar f tn ve never had shingles before now. I went to the doctor today and got neurontin and valtrex, but the doctor told me to keep taking the Concerta. I don't know what to do because the Concerta is helping my ADD, but I also believe it at least played a part in my shingles outbreak.
Avatar f tn My dad has shingles and he takes Norco's. Have you heard of those??? He also has taken tramadol.
Avatar m tn I've had them but caught it within 48 hours so my primary care put me on acyclovir, which cuts the duration as well as the aeverity. I think you might be too far in for an antiviral. Narcotics aren't the best way to treat shingles pain. Ask for neurontin or lyrica. Cymbalta may work but that takes longer to kixk in. Treating shingles pain is pretty basic. If your doctor doesn't take your pain seriously, you might want to look at finding a new doctor.
Avatar n tn Understand that there is no cure, unfortunately. Possible treatments include drugs like Lyrica and Neurontin - and I'm not a fan of either one. I would consider alternative treatment like nutritional therepies for chronic pain, exercise, accupuncture, yoga and meditation. I'm sorry but you have a chronic pain syndrome that is often quite difficult to treat. My personal advise is the avoid drug treatments if at all possible.
681148 tn?1437661591 What was the dosage you took to deal with the nerve pain and how long did you take it before the nerve pain stopped? I'm not concerned about the safety of the Neurontin at the low dosage I'm taking. I'm actually more concerned about the effectiveness.
612205 tn?1225594910 s not a narcotic. I have MS and, as HelpinUtah alluded to, Neurontin is prescribed, in general, for nerve pain. My neurologist has had me on Neurontin for MS related pain in my legs, and I can tell you it's not habit forming. I presume you have some type of similar symptoms for your doc to prescribe it (?). I hope this helps ..
Avatar f tn Common side effects of gabapentin include dizziness, somnolence, fatigue, fluid retention, nausea and vomiting. Take as prescribed and check with your doctor if you have any side effects. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn lysine and arginine. Since lysine inhibits the reproduction of the shingles virus, you should be sure to include plenty of high-lysine foods in your diet. These include meat (such as beef, poultry, and pork), fish (such as cod), and eggs, just to name a few. The amino acid arginine helps to reduce blood pressure and is good for the heart. Unfortunately, the shingles virus uses this particular amino acid to survive. So, although it’s good to have arginine in your diet, don’t overdo it.
Avatar m tn We are still in the process of ruling things out. FMD is treating her for Shingles with Valtrex, and Post Herpatic Neuralgia with Neurontin and Vicodin, but nothing has helped yet! Haven't considered Lupus at all. Her vit. D, and B12 has been historically low, and she is on supplements for both. Oral vit. D, I give her B12 injections monthly and levels have been normal! Diabetes has been ruled out already.
Avatar n tn ve never had shingles before now. What happened in your case? I went to the doctor today and got neurontin and valtrex, but the doctor told me to keep taking the Concerta. I don't know what to do.
Avatar f tn Also at one year mark for post herpetic neuralgia from shingles. Neurontin, Lyrica, various pain meds, cortisone shots in back....nothing helps. Internist/neurologist/pain mgmt. specialist/ physical therapy....nothing helps. Now have intermittent burning, stabbing pains in back, side, legs. I also have rheumatoid arthritis. I don't know which way to turn!
Avatar m tn My mom had shingles five years ago and was left with nerve damage and pain....The doctor prescribed amitriptyline about two weeks ago...She has had no relief from the pain and cannot stay awake, has dry mouth and her vision is blurry. Can she stop taking the medication cold turkey (since she has only been on it for two weeks) and how long does it usually take to get any pain relief from this medication.
Avatar n tn I have to stop taking Lortabs - I posted about 8 weeks ago. My doctor agreed to a VERY kind taper schedule, but I did not stick to it. I came clean with the people who have been doling out my pills last night. I'm at about 100mg of hydro a day. I have approximately 20, 5 mg Lortabs (someone else has them, so I'm not sure of the exact amount). My question is this: can anyone help me with a taper schedule, and will Neurontin help with anything?
Avatar f tn oms-gabapentin 300 mg was prescibed to my mom for nerve pain and its a seizure medication? Any explinations she isnt epaleptic?
Avatar f tn There are lots of things that can be done for post shingles pain. Medications, like Neurontin, are sometimes given. Some practices are now using botox. Get to a doctor and see what options he gives you.
412194 tn?1233621532 I no longer blame myself for all the hurt and loss of my husband and daughter. I will try and get PO to let me relocate to the state he lives in and start my life here. I have been blessed to have another family to watch grow. Thanks guys you have helped me sooooooooooooo much and I will never leave here. Like I said, I LOVE lurking with all of you lol (((((((((((((Angels)))))))))))))))))) swtbreezie.
Avatar n tn Neurontin is given and used specifically to treat nerve pain. The best example is that it is given for the shingles. I doubt you have nerve pain but I am not a doctor. You need to addequately have your pain treated. I disagree with the above poster stating no narcotics. You sound like someone who follows doctor's orders and uses medicine to have a better quality of life. A better thing for you to do is to post in the Pain Management forum.
Avatar f tn t have low potassium (which can cause muscle cramps)? A friend of mine took neurontin, tried acupuncture and used ice for his shingles. He still had flare ups on his head where it bothered him last I knew and was using a soft ice pak.
Avatar f tn When I try to find info on gababantin I find that it's for the aftermath of shingles. What is the connection to ms and why do ms patients take it?
Avatar n tn I have had this pain for over a year and Neurontin seems to help a little but not much. A week after nerve testing I broke out in shingles. Could these tests have caused shingles? My MD says the shingles nerve pain is separate from the nerve pain that I have all over my body. Growing up and as an adult I have had chicken pox four times. Is it possible that all this nerve pain is caused by the herpes virus since I seem to have no immunity to the virus that causes chicken pox?
Avatar n tn I have been on gabapentin for about three weeks and my back and stomach are broke out in hives or my daughterin law says they look like boils on my back .
Avatar n tn My father served thru WWII, Korea and Vietnam and still gardens 2 acres. He is a tough old bird but the lack of good sleep is hurting his health.A website or anything will help.If this doesn't help I will be buying every bogus cure on the internet.
189269 tn?1189755825 I'm on Gabapentin also (for depression... Gab's a generic Neurontin) in combo with Paxil. I never noticed itching increase when she added Gab, but was kind of 'out of it' and bipolar like at the time. I asked about the itching and the doc said it was from the treatment (Pegasys/Ribavirin) drying out my skin so much. Got some relief by using lotion (Aveno baby - no added colors or perfumes).
Avatar f tn I understand that is almost a must to rule out tumors and such. Did you get TN from having had SHINGLES? The other cause is an issue with the TN nerve being too close to a blood vessel and they rub together. or a tumor pressing against one or another compromising the limited space between the two. I was told that because my TN is directly related to having had SHINGLES that any operation would be a hit or mis deal as there is no way to know where the infection damaged the nerve.
Avatar f tn My wife was prescribed Hydrocodone for Shingles. She has been taking 1-2 pills every 6 hours for 2 weeks. How long does it take to become dependent/addicted to the drug? She also takes Gabopentin(sp?) for the nerve pain.
Avatar m tn then i would have to say give it a try, it is pricey, and sometimes insurance dosent always cover it, so if not covered by insurance, ask about neurontin, i take neurontin 600 mgs three times a day and it helps with my everyday pain quite well. lyrica and neurontin are in the same class of drugs and are not physically addictive.
