Common Questions and Answers about Narcolepsy treatment amphetamine

narcolepsy

Avatar f tn Are there any anti depressants or non stimulant/amphetamine meds that will help with the sleep attacks & day time drowsiness associated with narcolepsy? I'm a naturally anxious person.. and going on something like Adderall or Ritalin is out of the question... unless maybe if I have to drive somewhere that day. Is there any way to correct the condition, like with antidepresants?

Avatar f tn Whenever medication is included as part of the overall treatment plan, it is extremely important to work closely with the prescribing physician or therapist. Medications Prescribed for ADD and ADHD include: Adderall - Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. Adderall is used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Avatar m tn Hi, Adderall is a psychostimulant or sympathomimetic amine composed of mixed amphetamine salts. The drug is used primarily to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. Numbing of the hands and feet may occur with taking a larger dose of adderall than prescribed. You must get this examined to make sure that you are not suffereing from any side-effects of adderall usage. keep us posted and let us know if you need any more information.
Avatar f tn I HAVE A SLEEP DISORDER CALLED NARCOLEPSY AND THE TREATMENT IS AMPHETAMINES. FOR OVER 20 YRS. I HAVE BEEN TAKING 120 MGS. A DAY OF DEXEDRINE AND I HAVE NEVER NOTICED ANY EFFECT ON MY KIDNEYS OR OTHER ORGAN IN MY BODY. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO WAS BORN WITH HYDRO-NEPHORATIC KIDNEYS, WHICH IS REALLY SERIOUS, AND SHE HAS CHRONIC KIDNEYS INFECTIONS. SHE DOES NOT TAKRE ANY RECREATIONAL DRUGS BUT WHEN HER ANTIBIOTICS DON'T WORK THEY USUALL HAVE TO BE CHANGED TO A DIFFERENT ANTIBIOTIC.
Avatar f tn Hi, Adderall, a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, can stimulate the central nervous system and affect chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. This is usually indicated for narcolepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and may be used for migraine prevention. Hope this helps. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn Every medication have some side effects Amphetamine is used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD). How should I take amphetamine? It is the basic question that we need to know. Take amphetamine exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions , ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Do not take amphetamine in the evening because it may cause insomnia.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with "Idiopathic hypersomnia" which means I can sleep round the clock. I'm always fatigued and sleepy (unless medicated with a prescribed amphetamine). Can my sleepiness actually be the result of either my longterm use (15+ years) of Neurontin (for epilepsy) or longterm use (10 years) of Prozac? There are problems associated with going off either of these meds, but it is very difficult to get through life feeling chronically sleepy and drugged.
Avatar f tn I hate not knowing and trying to find ways to make it through the day. Also you might want to look at narcolepsy. I thought I might have Narcolepsy, since I have the hullicinations sometimes. When the doctor told me I had hypersomnia I asked if he was sure it was not narcolepsy. He told me one of the differences is naps help people with narcolepsy, but not those with hypersomnia. And napping never made sense to me, because it did nothing to relieve the tiredness.
Avatar f tn Hello, Lifestyle treatment of narcolepsy includes taking three or more scheduled naps throughout the day. Patients should also avoid heavy meals and alcohol, which can interfere with sleep. Drugs which have been used for narcolepsy are Modafinil (Provigil) or Armodafinil. You should try the lifestyle measures first before going in for medicines.

Avatar f tn My 7 yr old son is taking Tenex along with D-Amphetamine. These 2 together have given us much success over the summer, but school starting will be a whole new ball game for us. I haven't tried his treatment with just the D-Amphetamine alone, so I can't really say that the Tenex is playing a major factor in the treatment.
Avatar f tn Narcolepsy is a CNS disorder and is thought to also be caused by an autoimmune disorder. Causes: current thinking is that a group of cells in the brain responsible for sleep-wake behavior is damaged or absent. (gosh do you think the MS lesions might also damage this area for people unlucky to have both!) Tests: The spinal fluid of most patients with narcolepsy shows the neuroprotein lacking or deficient. The neuroprotein is "hypocretin".
Avatar m tn Your probation officer should know what medications you are on. Yes, Adderall is stimulant based, its a methamphetamine. You can look it up online to get the information. You should have a doctors letter stating that you are on the adderall or have your doctor change you to Stratterra which is a non-stimulant treatment for add/adhd, especially in adults. I wouldn't be too worried, but if you don't want to test positive all the time you might want to try something else.

729135 tn?1247495402 Regarding genetic testing for narcolepsy, positive test results indicate a susceptibility to narcolepsy but do not definatively diagnose narcolepsy. Positive genetic tests results are used to support a clinical diagnosis of narcolepsy. We recommend that you speak with your doctor regarding your symptoms and test results as well as to discuss the most appropriate course of treatment for your specific situation. We wish you the best.
Avatar m tn As many of you know, I'm currently on SOC treatment, due to finish in July. I am applying for employment with some larger companies that may require a drug test. Will the interferon and Ribavirin show up in these tests? I dont use any other drugs. Thanks.
1745492 tn?1320198340 My husband was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy about 5 years ago and the narcolepsy is under control with 200 mg of Provigil. He had hypnogogic hallucinations, body jerks when falling sleep, imaginary conversations with no one, talked in his sleep, fell asleep driving, talking and even in activities you'd never imagine a male would fall asleep. He appears to always have had it since about puberty but it got worse as his sleep apnea did.
Avatar f tn I have had narcolepsy (and sleep apnea) for a long time. I had had three bariatric surgeries over the past 14 years, and my drs have wondered if some of my meds are not being absorbed properly or at the right rate, yet no one has done any kind of 'test' to determine that. I have tried everything possible for my narcolepsy---the ritalin patches, elixir ritalin.......etc, provigil, other meds....and of course xyrem. I take dextroamphetamine daily, even though it does litte...
Avatar m tn My doctor does know about the amphetamines. They are a tri-amphetamine for treatment of attention "disorder". My pulse is noticeably weaker in the neck and normal at the wrists. I have EMT training and spent 4 years in the Navy as an assistant corpsman. It is not that the nurse didn't notice anything it is that she didn't feel my pulse with her fingers. My heartbeat itself is much weaker than normal. I am healthy and very aware of changes in my body.
612876 tn?1355514495 t know if this same answer will fit, but I wanted to share in case this information could possibly help someone else who is experiencing this paralysis. Apparently, I have narcolepsy (with cataplexy); by taking a very detailed history all the way back into my early childhood, they were able to determine that I had the narcolepsy BEFORE I had POTS, but the cataplexy only showed up when I started having syncope.
