Common Questions and Answers about Mirapex for bipolar depression

mirapex

Avatar n tn I am diagnosed with bipolar disorder. i take lithium ER 450mg BID, Mirapex 1mg for RLS, and zoloft 100mg to treat depression. I can usually fall asleep, however i wake and stay up for a few hours every night. i have tried benedryl, klonopin, trazadone, serequil, and elavil for relief however every one of these meds has a paradoxical effect on me. Any suggestions?

574118 tn?1305135284 I do know that taking an antidepressant without a mood stabilizer can cause mania, also I take Mirapex (a dopamine drug) to help treat my fibro and I'm under "special watch" because the dopamine meds can cause mania even in people that aren't bipolar. My husband was taking Mirapex as well for his fibro and he had to stop because it made him feel manic, and he's not bipolar. So I can't speak for the seratonin, but the dopamine can definitely make someone manic.
Avatar f tn ve been unable to get lethargy/motivation/depression wrapped up. I am treated for bipolar 2, severe restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea. Summer 2012 I finished chemo and radiation for stage 3 breast cancer (mastectomy 8/2011). Currently, I take Lithium 900mg, Mirapex 1.5mg, Arimidex 1mg, Xarelto 20mg, Iron 65mg and (vitamin)D3 2000IU. Lithium level is 1. I'm curious as to what might be my thyroid treatment?
Avatar f tn I take vallium once a day at night to help me sleep without the vertigo. Through the chiropractor I take one for depression and the other for helping to wire my brain correctly, it is cortisol which he believes I have been low on since I was eleven. I get from psych, or internist or chiropractor blood tests for lithium levels, liver count, white blood cells, toxins and my thyroid...both tests for the thyroid. I agree with corlenbelspar and the usuals that give incredibly good info.
Avatar n tn I was recently prescribed Lamictal for depression/anxiety related symptoms. My psychiatrist thought it was worth a try because it doesn't have some of the side effects like the Effexor XR I've been taking for 5 years. Effexor works for my anxiety/depression, but I don't like the sexual side effects. Lamictal, though, seems to only be approved for treating bipolar disorder and epilepsy. I have never been diagnosed with bipolar disorder nor do I have epilepsy.
723341 tn?1232338253 Be careful treating rls. I have taken 3mg of mirapex for over 7 years. Apparently it is a high dose for rls. It seems rls has spread to my arms and shoulders. A sleep specialist said that it spread due to the high dosage. I'm staying on it though because nothing else works. Good luck.

8899291 tn?1407195461 There are different kinds of mood disorders, not just depression or bipolar disorder. There are also subcategories...
Avatar f tn Sorry I should have been clear: I'm going in for a psychological evaluation specifically for bipolar disorder.
462570 tn?1273632977 My doc just prescribed Mirapex for me. And it helps a great deal. It stimulates the D1, D2, D3 and D4 dopamine receptors. It is an agonist and most especially hits the D4. It really helps the pain but I'm not sure if that is because it relaxs me or if it is actually correcting a deficiency in the dopamine levels that is causing the fibro. It also stimulates something that makes me dream vividly and sleep very lightly (of course, if you dream all night long - you are sleeping lightly!
Avatar f tn Also support groups can be of help. There are often mood disorders support groups in outpatient centers and NAMI has some worthwhile support groups as well.
Avatar f tn Often SSRIs can have the opposite effect on certain types of bipolar. Zoloft worked for me for awhile, but when a truly depressive episode hit, it at best dod nothing for me or it exaserbated the depression. I have been through many meds since I have been diagnosed. Some they never should have put me on (my type of bipolar is scarily bad when mixed with Lithium).
Avatar f tn I'm bipolar & have pretty bad anxiety. I'd been off meds for awhile & don't wanna be on them again until Kyri is born b/c of the side effects. It seems that pregnancy has made my depression much worse. Has this happened to anyone else & what do u do to make it better. Thanks.
Avatar f tn I have used lamictal for my bipolar 1 condition. It is a fantastic mood stabiliser especially for those with labile type symptoms. It is 1 of the newer ones they are using and I highly recommend it.
Avatar f tn 4) decompression surgery advice and or chiari is best handled by a neurologist 5) medications and therapy would be beneficial for you (because of bipolar) this is the best way to controll depression etc. The fixations regarding medications (for bipolar can help finding the right one) and chiari is to no resolve. one step at a time. therapy, medications... then conquer the chiari.
Avatar m tn Hi, I noticed that no one had answered you yet, perhaps it is because there may be no clear cut answer to your question. I am sorry that you are suffering from recurrent depression. I do as well. Has your doctor talked to you about any of the various "bipolar" issues? The classic "bipolar" or "manic-depression" illness has alternating moods of depression and high-euphoria.
Avatar f tn I would like to go to a naturalpath dr for my bipolar. Are they expert enough like medical dr.? Do they have the knowledge? Also, can I wean off my bipolar meds at the same time as taking what the naturalpath suggests? Are they just as knowledgable as psychrists?
Avatar m tn OK, I will try to consult with my doctor for Zyprexa (Olanzapine). Wikipedia said FDA approved it for only Mania in bipolar patients not for depression. But I think antipsychotics also reduce depression by looking at the experiences of different people. Can Risperidone also work like Zyprexa? I am currently on it with an anti depressant.
918275 tn?1254068752 Why does it seem like the pdocs are not addressing the severe bipolar depression with meds that target depression? Why are we given only mood stabilizers. Depression is a killer, it takes your life away cause your are in bed for days and nights without the energy to get up, and then when you finally do get out of bed you know that it is only for a short time and you dread it cause you know without a doubt you will be back in the same boat once again. Over and over and over.
Avatar n tn I am not sure I understood the meaning of switching. If you mean to relieve depression then it would eventually. But celexa/cipram is not a strong SSRI so it might take a few weeks not many. If you mean on the contrary switching to mania then if you are BP2 then for some it does and for some it doesn't especially if they add a mood stabilizer or an atypical antipsychotic like the strong zyprexa say. For me for instance it took 6 months to be manic.
Avatar n tn Gosh, it's uncommon to ask what they are giving you medication for? I'd just be unconventional then and ask any way. You need to know. Medication is often just one component to overcoming something. Knowing what the diagnosis is is essential to knowing what else to do! My search comes up with this. Proate 500 ---- Proate is used as an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug, primarily in the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and, less commonly, major depression.
