Avatar n tn In recent times, the only medication that has been widely used to prevent, and sometimes also to treat, cramps is quinine. Quinine acts by decreasing the excitability of the muscles. It has also been shown to be effective in many, but not all, scientific studies. However, quinine also causes birth defects and miscarriages. It has also occasionally caused hypersensitivity reactions and a deficiency of platelets, which are the blood components responsible for clotting.

Avatar f tn Yes. Cramps can be a complication of cirrhosis of the liver. The true cause is not known. Sometimes cirrhotics who are taking diuretics can cause an imbalance of sodium and potassium which can lead to cramping. Other times it can be other imbalances of electrolytes caused by poor absorption of nutrients because the liver is involved in processing.

Avatar f tn For years, my brother has been experiencing what seem to muscle cramps under his lower ribs; he says people have thought he was having a heart attack because of the way the cramps make him clutch his stomach and lean backwards in pain. My father has suggested quinine, but it's unavailable nowdays. The doctor doesn't seem concerned; however, my brother is very incapacitated by these spasms. I read magnesium/calcium suppliments may help; also, tonic water containing any quinine, as well.
Avatar m tn As mentioned a magnesium gluconats supplement helps. The specific drug that relieves these cramps is quinine sulfate, which was sold for 150 years in the U.S. over the counter until the FDA reported several deaths from patients gobbling the pills like candy. They now require a prescription. If you don't have a cardiac history your physician may prescribe them. They are available from a Canadian pharmacy for $23. Rite-Aid charges $234 for thwe same prescription!
