Avatar n tn I suffer from Trigeminal neuralgia since 2005. For first few years I didn't have to take any meadication. Since 2010 attacks were frequent. I am on Tegretol 50mg am & 50 pm. The side effects are terrible, feeling extremly tired & also feeling low. Some times I have to increase the dose& it's unberable. Is there alternative?
Avatar n tn What tablets are you taking?
Avatar f tn Carbamazepine (Tegretol) was first used to treat trigeminal neuralgia in the 1990s. Because of its success in treating that painful condition (which is very difficult to treat), it was then used to treat all kinds of neuropathic pain. While it may be useful, there are more modern medications that may help if you have a neuropathic pain problem -- for instance, Neurontin (gabapentin) and Lyrica (pregabalin).
Avatar m tn There is a chance of a misdiagnosis here if Tegretol is not working. It is the gold standard for treating trigeminal neuralgia. If it is not working, it may possibly be pain of some other cause. The neurologist may be able to help you sort this out.
Avatar n tn However, I had the same symptoms you were having and was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. Its where one or more of the three main nerves in your face cause nerve pain, or neuralgia. The first nerve lays across the eyebrows, the second lays across your cheek bones and the third nerve lays across the chin. My doctor put me on Lyrica and Klonopin and it seems to help a little, although the pain does intensify and the pain medication does not work for it since it is nerve pain.
Avatar f tn I have been seeing a Neurologist for over a year and he has tried me on Lyrica and Amitriptyline with no help. He thought maybe it was Fibromyalgia but no. Now he is saying possibly Trigeminial Neuralgia. I also had an MRI done to rule out Mutilple Sclorosis. This pain is ROBBING me of my life!!!!! Please I beg for any help and advice!!!!
Avatar n tn I may have trigeminal neuralgia in the mandibular branch. Severe pain in the lower gum area but it is on both sides which has my PC doctor, my neurolgist, my pain management dr, my neurosurgeon and my accupuncturist all baffled. Meanwhile, I am on Lyrica, which is becoming ineffective, Vicodin, which does not help much, and Ambien to knock me out at night to get some sleep. Is anyone out there who has experienced such a problem that can head me in the right direction? I am losing hope.
Avatar n tn It also seems worse when her stress level is higher Here comes the part, I do not understand, she has no pressure points on her face that start the pain, also an ice pack, reduces the pain, when I understand cold is usually a trigger for atypical trigeminal neuralgia -- Since her pain most times starts mid afternoon and continures to build into the evening, some days she is in bed by 8pm -- all this seems opposite of the symptoms, I have seen for TN The Dentist, 2 root canals, 1 crown, 2 b
Avatar n tn I know someone who was recently diagnosed with TN and also has a lot of pain. It is a difficult condition. There is a forum on medhelp for Trigeminal Neuralgia where you can find support and hear others' stories. Just click on Forums in the blue menu bar up top, and scroll down to the Ts. I hope she finds relief soon!
Avatar f tn I was just diagnosed with Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia yesterday. I turn 40 on November 15th. The pain is unbelievable when it comes on, and unfortunately I have a very difficult time taking pain medications as they make me very ill & drowsy beyond belief. I have had 2 MRI's, a Fine Cut CT Scan, met with an Otolaryngologist and a Neurologist. We now know that I have this rare neuralgia condition.
Avatar f tn Hello all. My neuro has never actually said I have trigeminal neuralgia, he's treated my imaginary facial pain with various anti-seizure meds, recently I have used the diabetic med, lyrica, which works. Question I have is, if bilateral trigeminal neuralgia is only common in ms, why can't THAT be a diagnostic aid, much like optic neuritis? Should I have asked him to NAME my facial pain? To get him to admit something is up with me?
1645454 tn?1301109800 Am currently taking 300 mgs Gabapentin q 4 hrs for Trigeminal Neuralgia and now, severe neuropathy from knees to feet. While it helps with the TN, it's not helping with the neuropathy. So, am going to try Lyrica. My question is: what would the same dosage of Lyrica be? The doc just told me 100 mgs Lyrica 3X a day?
Avatar m tn I have been suffering with Trigeminal Neuralgia since 2006. I have done some reading that states people do take flexeril. Is this med helpful for nerve pain?
405614 tn?1329144114 When I saw my dentist last week, she said that the continued pain on the left side of my mouth where I had the root canal and crown could be because of my trigeminal neuralgia, making it take longer for the pain to stop. The other choice was that the infection (it had abscessed) wasn't totally gone and we wouldn't know for a few more weeks, or if I got a "pus pocket" (ugh!), or it showed on X-ray because of lots of infection.
Avatar f tn For those of you with trigeminal neuralgia, would you mind me asking you what it feels like? I have been assuming, for a while, that what I have in my face is bilateral trigeminal neurlagia. But, perhaps I'm wrong.
Avatar n tn t help tell you were to go, but I do know what you’re going through, and I have advice that can help lead you in the right direction. You can contact the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association for a referral and info about this disease at www.fpa-support.org. I've been to countless neurologists and I've been tested for MS and they didn't find anything. Like you, they blew me off and tell me that I need a psychiatrist.
Avatar n tn Already she had two pain blocks, neither worked at all and now they want to do a Radio Frequency abrasion - I am concerned about her diagnosis, atypical trigeminal neuralgia -- being treated like the regular Trigeminal Neuralgia, the pain symptoms do not match -- did yours start this was and progress into the trigeminal neuralgia They have all her dental recorrds, even an MRI plus another ct from emergency room earlier this year, and all the records from the pain clinics -- yet pain symtoms
Avatar m tn I took neutontin for several years until it started to take more and more to acheive the same level of pain relief at which time my Doctor switched me to LYRICA 75mg 3 times a day. Except for the occassional flare up the LYRICA seems to work.
