570906 tn?1219279568 Three liver specialists Ive consulted with all feel that the statin/HCV warnings have been overblown and that statins (including lipitor) are usually safe for those with HCV. Taking it with grapefruit juice is another story and I believe that's contraindicated. That said, liver enzymes should be regularly monitored when on statins, especially in the beginng. Did your liver enzymes spike after taking Lipitor? If not, your liver pains might be caused by something else.
1175033 tn?1492201228 I started taking Valium recently and noticed that the bottle warned not to consume grapefruit of the juice at all while taking this medication. This was a issue for me because I drink hansen's natural cane sugar soda with real grapefruit extract and I had to give that up, but I really didn't want to so I read up on what it will do. One article I came across said it would increase the potency of certain meds by 400% http://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar n tn * Anthelmintics (Used for treating certain parasitic infections, includes praziquantel albendazole and mebendazole) * carbamazepine (Tegretol) Grapefruit or grapefruit juice slows the breakdown of this drug, increasing the level of it in blood * Loperamide (Imodium), the anti-diarrhea drug * colchicine (Colcrys) The CYP3A4 isoform of cytochrome P450 is located in both the liver and the enterocytes. Avatar n tn A Potential for Adverse Events Many patients may take their medications with a glass of juice. However, since the accidental discovery of an interaction between the calcium channel blocker, felodipine, with grapefruit juice,1 it has now become evident that grapefruit juice has the potential to alter the plasma concentrations of many medications when they are taken by mouth. In some cases, this may result in undesirable clinical effects of medications.
Avatar f tn thanks Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (for example, bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours.
Avatar f tn My husband was recently taken off of Lipitor and has been experiencing daily headaches. He's not a headache person. Is this a common thing when coming off Lipitor? Also, I have read that you should stop it gradually. Is this true?
10996785 tn?1432812977 Hey guys. I post in different communities here. I know that it's known that lipitor has the side-effect of muscle tiredness and aches. Has anyone else have to deal with this? Man it's off the hook. I almost am paralyzed fro, lipitor. This horrible and I would like to talk to someone who's been through it. This is a very under-rated affliction IMO. I've been tested and it doesn't look like I have the Rabadolosis<sp? That spelling isn't even close.
Avatar f tn The free clinic I go has switched me from Crestor to Lipitor even though my LDL is very high. It's a thorn in my side and won't budge even with Crestor. The cardiologist was even talking about adding another medicine to fight it. When I mentioned this to the clinic they told me every couple of years they switch drugs. So basically they can't afford to care about exceptions.
Avatar f tn I have been prescribed Lipitor for my cholesterol. Is there a possibility of a photosensitivity to this drug? I had a serious reaction years ago to Tetracycline and I am very hesitant to try any new drugs. I use a sunscreen daily but I don't think this would eliminate the risk.I would appreciate any help on this subject.I realize that any drug can cause a possible bad reaction, however some are worse than others. Thank you.

Avatar m tn At about 4 months after surgery, I changed statin and antacid medicines to Lipitor (80) and Nexium. Two weeks later, I started experiencing mild aching in the upper chest/esophogus area--a mild form of my heart attack/angina symptoms. I switched back to Aciphex at that time, but remained on Lipitor. At the six month after surgery point, I underwent a stress radionuclide test and another heart catheterization (required by my job). Both tests showed no problems.
Avatar m tn It was explained to me that grapefruit may cause a allergic reaction with the PI's. They did not mention lemons and I put lemon or lime in my water daily. Now I'm not suppose to be doing that? OOh **** one more thing to worry about! Lol !
Avatar m tn My doctor tried several other replacements but all brought on anxiety until I tried Lipitor. I have been on Lipitor since then and it has been working quite well. My medical insurance company stopped covering Lipitor and my doctor has been trying to find a suitable replacement. First, I was prescribed Pravacol which brought on a strong anxiety attack after taking it for 3 days. I was then given Crestor.
10996785 tn?1432812977 LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets are not for everyone, including anyone who has previously had an allergic reaction to LIPITOR. It is not for those with liver problems. And it is not for women who are nursing, pregnant, or may become pregnant. If you get pregnant, stop taking LIPITOR and call your doctor right away. If you take LIPITOR tablets, tell your doctor if you feel any new muscle pain or weakness.
Avatar n tn The good news is that the high HDL has a protective effect against plaque build up in your arteries (atherosclerosis) I don't know what your reaction to Lipitor was, but given the facr that you have had blockage of your coronaries in the past you should take a "statin" like lipitor if you can tolerate it. Talk to your doctor to see if this is an option.
Avatar n tn Is the Nuva Ring okay to use while on Lipitor? Is the Nuva Ring not recommended for people with High cholesterol? My Lipitor is 10 mg. Thank you!
142526 tn?1397090672 While you are taking this medicine, you should avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice. You may choose an alternative citrus beverage (such as orange juice). In the event that you are instructed by a healthcare professional (e.g., doctor, pharmacist, or dietitian) to eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice you should discuss with your doctor the effects of grapefruit on the blood levels of this medicine.

Avatar n tn Not sure if you can answer other questions, but for the last two days he has had excessive burping. We are worrying this is somehow heart related, but he also had a bad reaction to Lipitor, vomitting with it and horrible muscle pain, so hopefully that is all it is. I am so thankful for this website and your comments. It has been a lifesaver in this terrifying time in our lives.
Avatar f tn One thing I have read about is Grapefruit Juice helping in clearing HCV. Since reading this I have started drinking Grapefruit Juice daily. The way I see it is it is not going to hurt me either way to drink it. But I was wondering how many here really believe that drinking Grapefruit Juice can help fight off HCV? I am trying everything I can to help me try and have spontaneous clearance. I don't really care for the taste but have been putting it down just incase.
