Avatar n tn One ingredient is Concentrated Grapefruit Juice, do not mix it with ANY statin.
Avatar n tn A Potential for Adverse Events Many patients may take their medications with a glass of juice. However, since the accidental discovery of an interaction between the calcium channel blocker, felodipine, with grapefruit juice,1 it has now become evident that grapefruit juice has the potential to alter the plasma concentrations of many medications when they are taken by mouth. In some cases, this may result in undesirable clinical effects of medications.
Avatar f tn I read loads of the same about Grapefruit Juice - its worth trying along with other supplements - IF YOUR NOT ON TREATMENT - but if you ARE then best avoiding Grapefruit Juice and Milk Thistle until you come off treatment, Grapefruit Juice can affect your Treatment and stop it from working and Milk Thistle can affect Liver Function Test results and also increase/decrease the effects of some other medications you may be taking Im bang into Alternative Therapy but always follow the SOC approach,
Avatar f tn Some of them forget to mention that the level of naringenin concentration needed is impossible to achieve simply by drinking the juice, or even by taking supplements. I've drank grapefruit juice for 3 months, and it made me feel great, full of energy, plus my gallstones stopped bothering me. Yet, as for HCV, my viral load actually grew by the end of the third month. This is when I agreed to start tx.
142526 tn?1397094272 Many oral drugs undergo first-pass (presystemic) metabolism by the enzyme. Several organic compounds found in grapefruit and specifically in grapefruit juice exert inhibitory action on drug metabolism by the enzyme. It has been established that a group of compounds called furanocoumarins are responsible for this interaction, and not flavonoids as was previously reported.

Avatar n tn I began Enalapril six weeks ago and did not see further eyebrow loss. I then began Lipitor and in a few days noticed a loss of several more eyebrow hairs. I stopped Lipitor, continued with the Enalapril and believe my eyebrow loss has stopped again. But my eyebrows have not grown back. Does it appear my problem is the Lipitor? Do you think my eyebrows will regain their hair loss?
1583640 tn?1296677630 I can't really say which one in the end caused it, although, I was on Vytorin at the time, but I had taken over the years Lipitor, Pravachol, Zocor and the last Vytorin, however, not even close to the dosage dimi8 is taking.
Avatar m tn Hi, there are no known interactions between lipitor and alcohol. But as both are metabolized in the liver, it can cause liver damage. According to studies done, grapefruit juice can increase the blood levels of atorvastatin. This can increase the risk of side effects such as liver damage. You should limit your consumption of grapefruit juice to no more than 1 quart per day during treatment with atorvastatin. Regards.

570906 tn?1219283168 Three liver specialists Ive consulted with all feel that the statin/HCV warnings have been overblown and that statins (including lipitor) are usually safe for those with HCV. Taking it with grapefruit juice is another story and I believe that's contraindicated. That said, liver enzymes should be regularly monitored when on statins, especially in the beginng. Did your liver enzymes spike after taking Lipitor? If not, your liver pains might be caused by something else.
Avatar n tn oj, pineapple, grapefruit as fresh fruit juices...are good for you but not if sickly--and many pills do not do well or are told to not use w/grapefruit with--Lipitor, is a biggy no no! I find if I grill pineapple slices, they do not effect like the fresh just cut will do!
Avatar n tn I set out to educate myself at the University of Google and graduated with a M.D. of me. Although I had a brand new (and yet unopened) $90. bottle of Lipitor, I was soon convinced to toss them for a wide array of alternative and natural remedies. Now, 6 months later, with HDL up 130% to normal and CHOL also in the normal range, I am feeling much better. My treatment came off the shelf at the local grocer at a cost of approx. $20 for the 6 months, and with no noticeable negative side affects.
Avatar f tn thanks Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (for example, bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours.

Avatar n tn My girlfriend is concerned about taking her meds in the AM with grapefruit juice. Would you happen to know if it is okay to have acidic juices with ACYCLOVIR? She was told that they may interfere with their effectiveness......
233616 tn?1312790796 In light of the fact that I am currently UND and have no virus, the reversal of fatty liver and less necrosis and less HCC all sounds very appealing, not to mention any reduction in IR would mean ones own Interferon response would be better post tx. and this alone may increase ones chances of an SVR even if begun at the end of an SOC regime. Perhaps now, more than any other time it could help insure one will recognize any lingering HCV and seek and destroy as designed.
Avatar n tn I have been on prilosec BID for 3 years, for GERD, and lipitor for cholesterol. However, I get bouts of severe stomach distress that presents as eggy, foul-tasting burping, then stomach cramping, bloating and nausea. It is pretty debilitating for a whole day, and makes me feel horrible. Bentyl doesn't help much, nor does Gaviscon. Does anyone have an idea what is causing this?? Is it the pylorus, or lactose intolerance...something totally different that my doctor and I are missing?
Avatar n tn Mix 1 teaspoon with juice. I like veggy juice or orange. Take once a day for the first week and then 3 times per day hence. Note that since my condition is hereditary I did not attempt to alter my eating habits at all. I am a fit and trim man and have modified my eating habits decades ago to maintain appropriate weight to height ratio. Now that I am 'cured' I will drop my pectin intake to 1 teaspoon/day. In Jan'08 I will be tested again to see in the lower maintenance dose is effective.
Avatar n tn After 4 months, my total cholesterol was 112, triglycerides 118, hdl was 31, and LDL was 57 with the Lipitor and low fat diet. My Dr added Niaspan. My dose was eventually upped to 2000 mg a day. My numbers are now, Total 95, HDL 45, LDL 42 and tri 38. I saw no effect on HDL until I was bumped to 1500 mg of Niaspan. (My lipitor dosage was cut back to 40 mg one night, 20 mgs the enxt night as my LDL was 31. My PCP thought my LDL was a little too low.
211940 tn?1267884866 However, he said it could NOT be causing me so much pain. He checked out my arm and noticed a hard soft tissue knot, and suggested removing it through surgery and it "might" relieve my pain. So, 3 weeks ago I had the said surgery and it was removed (a hard soft tissue mass about the size of a marble). No, this was not the cyst inside my humerus bone. Anyways, I still have the pain, and it is extremely terrible at night (on a scale of 1 to 10, a 20 at night).
Avatar n tn Fruit Pectin Cholesterol Cure I was diagnosed in June '07 from a May blood test. Doc said it was hereditary and there was no dietary fix to be had. Prescribed Lipitor at $3./day for the rest of my life! I numbly bought the pills but Googled the drug before taking. There is a 5.6% rate of severe muscular degeneration! I never took them out of the wrapper.
390388 tn?1279639813 My problem is with the symptoms all the time of being lightheaded, blurred vision, heavy arms, legs, chest and headaches and palps and/or chest pains. Last oxygen level check was 92. My echocardiogram was pretty good last year and even though my EF has dropped from 73% down to 52% all is still within range. My glucose numbers have been under control (been keeping them between 80-110) and thyroid issues are ok too I believe....
Avatar n tn I think everything is over and I clean up. I walk out of the toilet and in about 2 minutes time the stomach cramp and the fainting sensation comes back (I've fainted only once to date from this and was out for about 15-20 minutes). 6. When I get back to the toilet I have a really violent Diarrhoea episode in pure liquid state.
Avatar m tn ) ps: I struggle with very LOW bloodpressure, so I do the complete opposite: live on salty stuff!
Avatar n tn Have you had any comments from the pharmacy as to drug interactions? One that I know of is grapefruit juice. Make sure she doesn't have any, it can double and even triple the effects of certain medications. I have two concerns regarding her list of medications. 1. There are far too many and judging from a few it is damaging her liver. and 2. Aspirin is a mircale drug, yes - but it is a powerful blood thinner as well. Make sure she gets blood tests.
Avatar m tn I tell people that, yes this was done, it's in the literature, it's actually in the drug information when you read it, says avoid grapefruit juice, and then studies showed 1 quart of grapefruit juice. I have never met anybody that drinks a quart of grapefruit juice. But I tell people if they want to use grapefruit, they should know that they shouldn't take it at the same time as their statin because it will increase the dose effect.
