Avatar f tn thanks Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (for example, bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours.
Avatar f tn Hey Jean. I just joined myself but have been HCV for (by my estimate 21 years now). I won't say it can't be incredibly hard. There's the social stigma, coming to terms with the fact you have it and then the telling of family and friends, not to mention dating and that's just the emotional side. A good place to start is educating yourself about transmission, that way you can feel confident in yourself that you can protect those you love and encounter.

570906 tn?1219279568 Three liver specialists Ive consulted with all feel that the statin/HCV warnings have been overblown and that statins (including lipitor) are usually safe for those with HCV. Taking it with grapefruit juice is another story and I believe that's contraindicated. That said, liver enzymes should be regularly monitored when on statins, especially in the beginng. Did your liver enzymes spike after taking Lipitor? If not, your liver pains might be caused by something else.

I know some put some Lemon Juice in their water to help with digestion, and some will eat a grapefruit a day for weight loss, but, being these are all "citrus" and "acid" I would be very careful, especially if you are susceptible to stomach problems or have an ulcer. Also, if on certain blood pressure meds, be careful, citrus fruit can cause a bad reaction if taken with these drugs.

After six hours the grapefruit juice wears off, the liver again starts producing these enzymes, and you take a second dose of the medication.
