570906 tn?1219279568 Three liver specialists Ive consulted with all feel that the statin/HCV warnings have been overblown and that statins (including lipitor) are usually safe for those with HCV. Taking it with grapefruit juice is another story and I believe that's contraindicated. That said, liver enzymes should be regularly monitored when on statins, especially in the beginng. Did your liver enzymes spike after taking Lipitor? If not, your liver pains might be caused by something else.
1175033 tn?1492201228 I started taking Valium recently and noticed that the bottle warned not to consume grapefruit of the juice at all while taking this medication. This was a issue for me because I drink hansen's natural cane sugar soda with real grapefruit extract and I had to give that up, but I really didn't want to so I read up on what it will do. One article I came across said it would increase the potency of certain meds by 400% http://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar n tn In light of the potential for serious adverse outcomes, patients taking medications with a potential for interaction with grapefruit juice should be advised to avoid drinking grapefruit juice. Possible interactions with whole grapefruit have not been evaluated but it would be assumed to have similar effects.
Avatar n tn are good for you but not if sickly--and many pills do not do well or are told to not use w/grapefruit with--Lipitor, is a biggy no no! I find if I grill pineapple slices, they do not effect like the fresh just cut will do!
Avatar f tn thanks Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (for example, bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours.
Tbd I had problems with aches and pains with Lipitor and switched. It reduced the amount of aches and pains, however try to add COQ10 with your meds. I have found that it helps a lot.
Avatar f tn Julie, if you’re going to drink a lot of grapefruit juice and include it with other meds, be sure to discuss it with the doctor.
Avatar n tn Blood levels of cyclosporine are increased if taken with grapefruit juice. A plausible mechanism involves the combined inhibition of enteric CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein, which potentially leads to serious adverse events (e.g., nephrotoxicity).Blood levels of tacrolimus (Prograf) can also be equally affected for the same reason as with cyclosporine.
Avatar f tn Hey Jean. I just joined myself but have been HCV for (by my estimate 21 years now). I won't say it can't be incredibly hard. There's the social stigma, coming to terms with the fact you have it and then the telling of family and friends, not to mention dating and that's just the emotional side. A good place to start is educating yourself about transmission, that way you can feel confident in yourself that you can protect those you love and encounter.
Avatar n tn I was on lipitor was many years but no doctor ever checked my blood. Last year I went off of this med because when I was hospitalized for something else they discovered that my liver enzymes were high. I'm still off lipitor and my enzymes flutuate from high normal to high. I'm wondering if the lipitor did damage to my liver. Also, I have some neurological issues which includes my muscles. Am wondering if the lipitor caused this. My total cholesteral is 226 and my LDL is 79.
142526 tn?1397090672 Dangerous medication interactions Researchers have known for twenty years that taking medications with grapefruit juice can increase the absorption of certain drugs — with the potential for turning normal doses into toxic overdoses. However, a few years ago a study found that consuming grape, apple or even orange juice can affect the absorption of other drugs, potentially wiping out their beneficial effects and in some cases causing toxic side effects.

Avatar f tn You have a higher chance for muscle problems if you are taking certain other medicines with Lipitor. Especially telling if there are muscle problems like weakness, tenderness, or pain that happen without a good reason, and if your husband also has a fever or feel more tired than usual. I was on Lipitor, but went on Simvastatin 20mg (much less expensive, too) and the results have been very good. Recent blood test shows LDL 45 and HDL 58, trig 55 and chol 114.
1583640 tn?1296674030 I've been taking 80 mg of Lipitor for 10+ years for my heart without any problems. Recently I began experiencing debilitating muscle cramps and spasms in my upper thighs. I can literally feel the muscles rolling and tightening under my skin. Nothing helps them. They occur mostly at night, but bending my leg too much can also trigger an attack. My pharmacist says its from the Lipitor. My doctor says its from Vitamin D and Magnesium deficiencies.

Avatar f tn I decided I was going to lose weight and eat healthy this year so about a 11/2 week ago someone told me that grapefruit helped with weight loss. I started drinking 2 8oz (I think) cans of juice a day for 7 days and I was adding grapefruit essential oil drops to my water. I didn't really feel different I was sweating more but I thought it was from the grapefruit working and I wasn't sleeping hardly at all.
Avatar f tn I believe its harmful when youre taking medication.
Avatar n tn My understanding is that grapefruit can interact and increase the effect of Zoloft and Prozac but not paxil. The protein involved with Paxil is not affected by grapefruit. You can ask your local pharmacist about this as well.
Avatar n tn I have been taking Lipitor for the last 10 years and lately I have developed muscle pains. I was told the pain might be because of the Lipitor. I stopped taking them for a couple of months, the pain was much less however my cloestrol level was back to 290. I would appreciate any insight or suggestions.
Avatar m tn com/ds/lipitor/hair%20growth%20abnormal/ My question is, has anyone else taking Lipitor experience this? How do you stop this 'hair growth' ? Is there an alternative to Lipitor? Thank you!
Avatar n tn People taking lipitor are recommended to avoid alcohol in their diet because it raises the triglyceride levels, another lipid which is a risk factor for heart disease. Going to soft drinks would be far more beneficial for your body obviously but if this is impossible I would switch your lipitor to the mornings. Lipitor, unlike some statin drugs, can be taken any time of the day.
Avatar m tn This, initially the drug does not completely metabolize and has an extended half-life. This why it is dangerous to take grapefruit juice with certain medications. Follow me on this. You take a substance that reduces the production of these enzymes (say grapefruit juice) and for the first four hours the drug does not fully metabolize. After six hours the grapefruit juice wears off, the liver again starts producing these enzymes, and you take a second dose of the medication.
