Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro side effects high blood pressure

lexapro

1295419 tn?1276826472 Lexapro carries under it's side effects hyPERtension, (high blood pressure) postural hyPOtension, (lowered BP upon changing positions, usually sitting to standing) and tachycardia. If you have only noticed these changes since beginning the Lexapro, I would certainly bring them to the attention of your doctor. They may very well stop when your body adjusts to the meds, but it never hurts to play it safe.
233622 tn?1279338505 That was before the weight gain/stomach issues. I have a close friend that is on it and has no side effects whatsoever from it. Other than the weight/stomach stuff, I have never had a problem with it. If it wasn't for that, I'd still be sticking with it. It is supposed to have the least side-effects, at least that is what I was told. If I find that I'm still having those problems after being off of it for awhile, I may go back on it.
Avatar n tn This class of medications has a stimulant effect on the central nervous system which can easily account for your temporary high blood pressure. Also, if you get too anxious about your blood pressure, that in itself can raise the pressure. I suggest you monitor this for another two weeks and you will probably see your blood pressure right back to normal. If not, see your doctor.
Avatar m tn However I am concerned as I suffer from high blood pressure and racing heartbeat and now I am afraid to take the Lexapro as I fear its going to worsen my not so good blood pressure and heart rate. Is this a valid cause for concern?  I DONT want higher blood pressure and heart rate.  Should I continue taking the Xanax as prescribed if I dont wish to take the lexa? Also is it possible to just medicate myself on Xanax and skip the antidepressants altogether!?
Avatar n tn Hi, I dont know what to think of lexapro. I went to the doc for high blood pressure and he said that i am to young to be having these problems (24) and started talking to me about stress. So i told him about some personal problems and he put me on lexapro instead of blood pressure meds (my average blood pressure is 190/110, pretty high) and i dont feel normal. Has anyone else taken these meds, what happened with you when you took it? is there long term side effects, hell short term side effects?
Avatar m tn why should take something that will lower my normal blood pressure and give me side effects.
Avatar n tn My question is at the beginning of week 4 of the Lexapro my blood pressure has been running high/normal to high. It goes down to 141/88 after I take a Xanax but it concerns me that it goes up and down so much during the day. I have always had heart palpatations even before the GAD set in but have never been diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse. Have had a normal EKG and normal cardiolite stress test. My GP mentioned a while back that she could add a beta blocker to the Lex and Xanax.
2193833 tn?1339414902 only on reading through the user information leaflet (I know...I should have left it alone)...is says it can cause high blood pressure...albeit in the uncommon side affect section. The last thing I want is that! Any feedback appreciated...
Avatar n tn Just researched side effects: "Mood swings and high blood pressure can also be attributed to the intake of HCG." Anyone having these or other side effects such as constipation, diarrhea, fatigue? My mood has been rather odd since I started the diet and HCG. Severely fatigued. Things seem a bit "off". PS: Bodybuilding websites state HCG should be injected intramuscularly. The more I research and learn, the more confused I get.
Avatar n tn When I started Savella I was coming off Lexapro so either one could have caused the side effects of dizziness, and getting "spots" in front of my eyes. Also it felt like my food sat in my stomach forever! I was nausous nearly all day while taking it for about the first month. I tried eating a piece of toast first but it was really hard to eat anything till almost the end of the day. It was really hard. I never ended up being able to take the full dose. I am taking 25 mg 2x a day.
Avatar m tn I have been on zoloft for two weeks and the side effects are still pretty bad, without any benefits (it seems like it has been two years!). (I have tried lexapro, paxil, and celexa, but zoloft was the first AD I have taken and from my first experience seemed to produce the least side effects for me (although this time seems bad). I know it takes awhile for SSRI's to get working and initial side effects are common. I started taking 25mgs for a week and have been on 50mgs for a week.
Avatar f tn When a med works, it will have more side effects; it means you're metabolizing it. When you have no side effects, it usually means you aren't metabolizing it and it won't work. The only two meds that ever worked for me were extremely sedating for awhile, until I got used to them. But the side effects were also pretty strong, whereas with meds that didn't work, I didn't have any problem getting used to them but they also didn't work.
Avatar m tn Two possibilities -- you're suffering withdrawal from the wellbutrin, or side effects from Celexa. Quitting an antidepressant abruptly is not advised -- although wellbutrin isn't one of the worst for withdrawal, they can all be difficult to stop taking and usually are tapered off. This is especially true when switching to a med in a completely class.
Avatar n tn I did not fill it because one of the side effects is a decrease in blood pressure. I run a low pressure of 100/60 and feel that I don't want to take anything that would cause it to go lower because that also increases dizziness. I quit drinking coffee, don't drink sodas, and don't drink alcohol. I had another episode the other night which caused me to get out of bed (4:30 a.m.). It lasted 2 hours!...uggh!!
Avatar n tn Hey Babyblue, I am thinking about getting mirena... but there seems to be so many bad side effects people are experiencing.. did you have any side effects at all?
Avatar n tn I too have suffered from anxiety for years - for almost 20 years was on/off imipramine (25mg/day) and heartrate was always in high 80's to low 90's, no other side effects and it was working, but after time blood pressure started to go up. Dr. changed me to lexapro (gained a little weight), blood pressure went back to normal - usually runs around 102/68, but my heartrate has now dropped to the 50-60's which is freaking me out more.
Avatar m tn If you read the indications and contraindications for Lexapro , you will note that this SSRI can--rarely--cause either high OR low blood pressure, as well as many other side effects. SSRIs that are better known for causing hypertension are Buproprion (Wellbutrin, Zyban), Venlafaxine (Effexor), and Phenelzine (Nardil): http://highbloodpressure.about.com/od/lifeafterdiagnosis/a/antidepressants.
Avatar n tn A couple of years ago I was told by doctors that I had high blood pressure and cholesterol, and they wrote prescriptions. Have to take these every day, they said. I did take 'em for a few months, but then stopped. The Ol' Lady was making me go to checkups and things like that, and I went, and they said both the cholesterol level and blood pressure were being controlled most excellently by the medications. They still say that today.
Avatar f tn That I was healthy--no high blood pressure, blood work fine, and the last mri nine months earlier was fine too. He said that I should go get checked by my eye dr. I went to my retinal specialist who told me my eyes were fine and that what I was describing was due to low blood pressure while sleeping. So one morning while still half asleep I took my blood pressure---it was normal. Primary care doc says no I dont have low blood pressure, its most likely the lexapro.
Avatar f tn 25 for 8 months) had no side effects and quit cold turkey again with no side effects. I was not aware of any of the side effects I just did it and was fine. Now that I know what could possibly happen, I am a little afraid to take the meds. This plays a small part in why I won't take the Lex but a larger part is that I feel that if I work on the things that are bothering me and to try and control the stress I can beat it without the meds.
1797743 tn?1389217285 Back in 2011 I was diagnosed with vitamin d deficiency, put on the high dose for 12 weeks and after taking the last dose I started feeling off. Went to the DR with palpitations and high blood pressure. They ran labs and my tsh was slightly elevated (4.6) and said I was hypothyroid and gave me a script for levothyroxine. I followed up with the NP at my PCPs office the next day and she agreed.
Avatar f tn The recovery from this stuff is very very slow but it does happen. There are new problems that the tx creates - I have high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome but am managing those. Overall though, there is no comparison between then and now.
955569 tn?1255493280 but heres my problem i was always very healthy and fit. ever sense meds i have high blood pressure, etc and im done.. i stop taking my lexapro 20mg. cold turkey about 3weeks ago. how long do these withdrawl effects last. i currently have a bit of sweating, but my most sever effects are chest feels tight, brain feels very cloudy, and my temper seems very sure as im easily ticked off.
Avatar n tn I dont consider mysef to be majorly depressed -maybe mild/moderate but she had put me on 20mg per day of lexapro!is this a high amount??Are the side effects bad??i start on them tommorow. I appreciate any advice!
Avatar n tn But they are more or less the same with regards to classification, efficacy and side effects. Lexapro claims to be an improved formula of Celexa, which is another SSRI. The pharmaceutical companies that launches these products tends to include an exhaustive list of possible side effects from the established papers to safeguard themselves from possible litigation. Remember each paper reveals its own profile of untoward effects from its set of patients.
Avatar n tn After i started taking lexapro i lost ten pounds. My side effects have been sweating and vivid dreams. The good thing for me is that i have been able to sleep now better than i ever did before. The dreams are annoying, but at least i am sleeping. That is the one thing keeping me from stopping taking it. I like the idea of getting off of it, but whenever i forget to take it, i can't sleep. so i feel pretty stuck.
Avatar n tn If you had diabetes, high blood pressure, or other medical condition that required you to take a pill every day, you wouldn't give it a second thought. This should not be and IS no different. I would just absolutely HATE to see you come back in 6 months, or a year, in dire straights, kicking yourself for making a rash decision for all the wrong reasons. It happens a lot my friend.
Avatar n tn The Lex has definitely helped my depression, but there have been side effects...extremely vivid dreams, sexual side effects and the occasional leg jerk while drifting off to sleep. My counselor says I need to stay on it for at least 6 months for it to make a difference but I'm scared of staying on it for much longer.
