Levoxyl and hair loss

Common Questions and Answers about Levoxyl and hair loss

synthroid

Avatar n tn s your thyroid have your hair loss evaluated by a dermatologist or hair loss expert to rule out any other causes. However, make sure your thyroid is not being under treated or change thyroid drug brands. It just might be the thyroid condition itself which just needs time to heal. Hair and nails are the last to heal and take the longest to heal than all the thyroid symptoms, so patience might be the only medicine.
Avatar n tn m hoping the increased dosage of Levoxyl will stop my hair loss. I have been taking 1200 mg of calcium vitamins and a multivitamin and evening primrose oil vitamins(2000 mg) (which I heard would help hair loss). Is there anything I should be doing to help prevent continued hair loss? Any suggestions would very much appreciated.
Avatar f tn I had all the symptoms including the dreaded hair loss! With my doctors approval, I started using Iodine Plus along with Levoxyl. My hair thickened back up and shedding completely stopped. I felt great until about 6 weeks ago I started having increased heart rate, headaches and also broke 2 blood vessels in my eye. I stopped the iodine supplement and started feeling better, but my hair loss resumed. My doctor urged me to stop using the iodine. What should I do?
Avatar f tn 5, the hair loss has stopped. But the severe color changes - from pale blonde to dirty looking and dark - will that change back as the thyroid heals?
Avatar f tn Will adding cytomel to your levoxyl help with hair loss? This discussion is related to Cytomel in addition to Synthroid.
Avatar n tn I lost my hair in patches in Sept 06, it resulted in me having to wear a wig. I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid and low ferratin levels so was put on 25 then 50 levothyroxine, but have no other thyroid symptoms. My hair grew back thicker than ever and everything was fine. Then in April 2007 I went on the cambridge diet and all of my hair broke off about 8th inch from the roots, all over. I was devastated again, i had by blood retested and my doctor put me up to 75 then 100 dose.
Avatar n tn 32 so the Dr felt it was not helping. I am still having great amounts of hair loss and wanted to post my recent labs here to get your thoughts: Ferritin - 19 Vitamin B 12 - 619 Vitamin D - 29 ng/ml Cortisol - 8.1ug/DL TSH - 1.1 uIU/mL TU - 32.7 % T4 - 6.7 ug/DL T7 - 2.2 Do these look within range? My endo says Vit D is a little low. Can that cause hair loss?
Avatar f tn My friend was recently prescribed a higher dosage of Synthroid - from 50 mcg to 88 mcg, I think- and she has experienced significant hair loss. She is wondering if she can attribute this to the med increase OR the fact that she also switched to the generic. ANy help would be appreciated.
Avatar f tn Please post your thyroid related test results and reference ranges from before the med reduction and after. Besides hair loss, what other symptoms do you have?
219522 tn?1251760629 For what it's worth, I too am on Levoxyl and as of yet haven't had the issue of hair loss come up. That's not to say it won't ever happen though (I don't trust anything with this thyroid stuff). Wonder what 'House' would say. Wish they'd do a show where he grumpily figures out someone's thyroid stuff. (Still can't believe his real speaking voice is a heavy British accent.) Take care.
Avatar f tn I have seen others here and on another forum say that Levoxyl is better in this regard. Having said that, however, what is your current TSH and free t4 level? I notice my hair falls out excessively when my TSH is over 2.
Avatar f tn my new growth is 3 inches long now...and the hair grew back in stronger and thicker than it normally was...and that was a good thing!!! By the way your welcome!!!!! Best wishes................
Avatar f tn One of the symptoms of hypothyroidism is hair loss.
Avatar n tn I had noticed my hair thinning about 2 weeks into the meds but the loss increased about 8 weeks into it and now it is coming out in full force. I called my Dr and told her about the hair loss increase and she advised me to continue the 88 mcg dose but add a vitamin for hair/nails. I was not satisfied with that and advised her I felt I was being OD'ed on the meds and she lowered it to 75 mcg. I now have to return in 6 weeks to have all my levels tested again.
Avatar f tn From what I read, hair loss appears to be mainly due to inadequate levels of Free T3 and Free T4 and/or low ferritin. The misconception occurs because when people first start taking thyroid med, it is very common that their Free T3 and Free T4 levels actually drop. Serum thyroid levels are a composite of both endogenous (thyroid gland production) and exogenous (thyroid med).
Avatar f tn Hello, I stared hypo from stress of caring for a family member 5 years ago and had hair loss through shedding and dry skin. Started out subclinical at a 4.4 TSH eventually started low-dose Levoxyl which return my skin back to its norm and I had thicker regrowth of my hair thankfully. Unfortunately I was inconsistent at eight months later my hair growth was falling out in chunks and I was back to a 4.4 TSH.
Avatar f tn I was not aware of any health problems and I do not have loss of vigor. Based on my blood test result my doctor made a derision regarding my thyroid gland, and Levoxyl 0,05 mg was prescribed, My questions: 1. Which blood test parameters are telling that I have to start/stop taking Levoxyl? 2. Can I replace Levoxyl with natural products (some diet, using the iodized salt, etc.) ? Many thanks!
Avatar n tn I did experience some slight hair loss when I was still too low (hypo) and needed a medication adjustment. Some people experience hair loss from synthroid when they first start taking it. You should probably call your doctor and discuss it with them.
Avatar f tn ve been on Synthroid with 5 mg of Cytomel everyday for the past few years and felt pretty darn stinky not to mention losing hair by the mounds. Started Tirosent about 5 days ago and dare I say it.....I think I feel better. Things are finally starting to move along digestively (if you know what I mean) and I don't feel so achy anymore. I'm still waiting to see if there's any change with the hairloss but I'm cautiously optimistic. I think I like it!
Avatar f tn with every prescription, and hair loss can be a side effect of this drug. But hair loss can also happen just as a result of your thyroid deficiency. Unfortunately not all cases are the same ... and your hair may take a little longer to smartin' up! My pharmacist also mentioned when I was going through this ( as I was also panicking) that alot of times, your symptoms will not disappear until your levels are back to normal.
Avatar f tn If you are still taking the synthetic T4 levoxyl hair loss is a reaction to from it until the doctor can find the right dosage for you. the web site below can tell you more about it. Stay Healthy http://www.drugs.com/levoxyl.
Avatar f tn Finally after continuous hair shedding to the point people thought I chopped off my curls they put me on a low dose of Levoxyl 25 mcg. My hair grew back thicker and stop shedding and skin no longer dry and I felt like myself again. 8 months later I started losing chunks of hair again and my levels where exactly back to where they where before taking Levoxyl. While on Levoxyl my TSH was a 2.6 and t3 and t4 went up to mid range.
Avatar f tn For those that have had PT and TT how many of you had serious hair loss? How soon after the surgery did it start and how long did it continue? At the worst how bad was it? Did anybody need to use wigs? Is the hair loss temporary or a lifetime struggle? Is there anything that helps prevent or at least minimize the hair loss? How many of you really didn't have any hair loss issues? How many are happy with your hair volume? Any info is very appreciated.
Avatar n tn Hair loss has many causes. Over or under-medication is one, but their are others (deficient of minerals or vitamins, etc.). But, I know some patients that are very particular and they prefer one brand of medication (or even one specific brand of generic meds). If you don't like one brand, it is okay to be adamant about asking your doctor to switch to an alternative thyroid medication.
