Common Questions and Answers about Levemir and how it works

levemir

Avatar f tn I see the confusion If I understand you, you think Levemir is used for carbohydrates. Levemir is a basle insulin, meaning it works for 24 hours. Like a background insulin. the amount of Levemir taken has nothing to do with the amount of carbohydrates (carbs) you eat. That type of insulin is called a bolis insulin, like Apedra, Novalog... that insulin is taken according to how many carbs are eating and YOUR particular carb to insulin ratio.
Avatar n tn Hi, If this low dose of lantus twice daily is working for you without any problems, there is no reason to change it. Lantus is written as once daily but many doctors(including myself) and patients split the dose because even though it is supposed to be "peakless", it is not for some people. At low doses it works especially well as a split dose. Levemir can be used instead, and is more commonly written as twice daily.
Avatar n tn You wife needs both the long acting insulin (Levemir) to be taken twice a day, and she will also need a fast acting insulin (such as novalog, Humalog or aphidra) to be taken just before eating so that it can 'cover' the food she eats (and with dose adjusted based on how much carbs and protein she eats).
1353681 tn?1387083733 Hi, I have not used lantus, but I do use levemir. Both are medium acting basal insulins. Levemir works best injected twice a day. I inject just before going to bed (22 units), and when I wake up in the morning (8 units). As you can see, I don't use the same dose morning and evening, as I find I need more basal insulin at night when I am inactive, than during the day when I am active. You will need to adjust your dosage based on your target blood sugar levels.
Avatar n tn m on novolog and levemir (levemir is just at bedtime).
Avatar n tn The Levemir is NOT on a sliding scale. It is a given does once a day Or twice a day. 12 hours apart. is his 224 after eating or first thing in the morning before food or drink?
Avatar n tn When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.
Avatar m tn The older insulins, particularly humalin-R do not have a flat action profile. they still have a peak and one has to be aware of this - though it can be very useful in addressing the dawn phenomenon. When I was taking Humalin-R I would typically go low by late morning. Compared to insulins like Levemir (Insulin Detemir), which have a fairly flat profile for their duration of action.
Avatar n tn I have not personally used it- how are things going for you since you were placed on it?
Avatar f tn He offered me a levemir sample he said it had less weight gain than lantus and was the same., plus the levemir company still samples, I have been on this stuff for three weeks, I don't feel sluggish after taking it, I feel great, and the pen is nice!
Avatar n tn I'm a mother of a T1 3yr old. I went through the same thing w/ him & just recently decided to just go back to the NPH & R. His numbers got so out of control his daycare removed him. I was told that there my be a peak but his were crazy. Before the injection we'll say he was 120 an hour later would be 240. I got no answers. Just suggetions to switch to the pump. He's very active also so I ruled that out just yet!
Avatar f tn Maybe someone will know the answer to this. (I'm sure the NP went over it with me, but my memory is totally shot.) I am just not sure exactly how the Fentanyl patch works. I know it releases the medicine through your skin over a period of hours. I started out changing it every 72 but she changed it to every 48. What I'm wondering is, if I were to take it off and not put another one on, how long would the medicine still work?
Avatar f tn Yesterday I got my Levemir and started taking it right away. It took most of the day to get down to 350. I was feeling real sick all day. Sleepy, dizzy, nauseous. muscle weakness. I slept from 6:00 pm until 10:00 am. My numbers were up to 500 again. I got them back to 300 by 3:00 pm, but have continued to feel just as sick. I am also drinking a lot of water. What else should I do? When will I start feeling better?
Avatar n tn Chromium appears to play a role in normal insulin function and glucose utilization, and some investigators have suggested that it increases insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance and decreases blood glucose levels in certain diabetics, possibly those with low chromium levels. However, others have not corroborated these findings, and a few have even reported a negative effect on glucose tolerance and blood levels.
Avatar n tn If you do change back, you may want to err on the side of keeping those night time snacks until you have a better sense of how and when the insulin works for you. I trust you are seeing an Endocrinologist who has had lots of experience with diabetics on insulin. It's important that your doctor specifically have experience using Lantus since adjusting every insulin is a little different.

Avatar f tn What about the theory that during th enight if your blood sugar dips low your liver will put out glucogon to help you out....and by having a 3 a.m. cracker or small drink of milk it will stop the liver from producing more sugar? This discussion is related to Fasting blood sugar levels high in the morning.
Avatar f tn LOL, Right! You got it! It was getting lost and no one has read it! Or maybe they dont understand it, not sure which.
Avatar f tn I take 120 mg morphine er and I need to know how long it takes for the medicine to kick in. I also don't understand what percentage of the dose ( or mg ) produces relief in what time stages. I hope my question is understandable.
431644 tn?1236899573 That is a key to depression and knowing you have it and dealing with it. thanks and let me know how you are doing and how the meds are helping.
Avatar n tn I am a Type 1 diagnosed at 33, and I am 10 years into the disease. I take sliding Humalog and 12 U Levemir at bed. I hope this helps.
915277 tn?1252573113 but, I did have a scare one month ago, I found a lump in my breast...my doctor felt it and said that he believed that it was a cyst, I had a diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound...nothing was visible on these tests, however, he advised me to have a surgeon check it out, just to be sure. I am still in the process of having that done. I might wait until September, to see what has been decided by the EASD, before I stop using Lantus...
