Lantus vs pump

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus vs pump

lantus

Avatar n tn My daughter is currently on the insulin pump and only goes on Lantus/Humalog when her pump is malfunctioning. Thankfully (for us), this hasn't happened in so long that I cannot remember what the formula is to calculate the lantus. I do remember that prior to going on the pump, her endocrinologist switched her lantus shot from AM to PM as her morning bg's were higher than they wanted them.
Avatar n tn I am wondering whether this is some hormone related issue ,or whether I have developed some resistance vs humalog so it doesnt work well (and the lantus is too much). I have given up using any alcohol or doing demanding exercise(jogging) for a while becuase they make the matters worse (though i really enjoy exercising). any suggestions to why this is happening or how i can take care of this would be greatly helpful.
Avatar m tn Hello. If older drugs worked better for you, sure go back. Each person has to manage their own diabetes.
Avatar n tn well, avantis (lantus) was not much help or all that interested they took the lot# of the lantus at my suggestion, it was not their belief that burning was related to an allergic reaction i am on my 3rd bottle of lantus w/same burning sensation, so it's not just the bottle, turns out there are no studies of lantus' long term effects in humans, which i found interesting, i have been reluctant to switch, but that seems to be where i am heading with this, i really wanted to stay with lantus
Avatar n tn ) I am giving you my input based on my experience with my son who was diagnosed almost 7 yrs. ago at the age of 3. (now on the pump as of 3 months ago)I am not a medical professional. I know you realize this, but I just had to reiterate it:) If I understood your question correctly, you were wondering if it was HARMFUL to NOT take any Insulin during a time period where you were not going to eat something with carbs???? My inclination would be to ask you what type of insulin you are on?
Avatar n tn t mind her four shots per day (lantus and humalog). She is not really interested in going to the pump but has agreed to meet with her diabetic educator to learn more. What would be your thoughts about her situation?
Avatar n tn I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???. I get my supplies from the Military Hospital because I am a retired service member and they do not have the lantus solostar flex pen but they do have the levimer flex pen.
Avatar n tn Hello Human Pin Cushion, My son was diagnosed at age 3. He is now 10. My sister was dxd at age 24...she is now 33. My sister did the 72 continuous glucomse monitoring last year. I think it was right before she went on the pump, as well. My son went on the pump right before she did, but he never did the 72 hr. thing. My sis had it inserted in her stomach. My sister (before pump) was on lantus and humalog doing what they call a "poor man's pump".
Avatar n tn Yes this happens a lot, when switching to lantus or the pump. Lantus is a long acting insulin that has no peak it gives you a steady basal rate similar to the insulin pump. I realize that it is hard to trust the the insulin enought to not have a snack, but it does work, and it is hard to resist the urge to react to the number.
Avatar n tn Patients today have to be educated consumers and if you decide you want to go back on the lantus or try the pump, you just have to find the right resources to help you. The CDE is a great way to start. They may even have some connections to some of those doctors who aren't taking any new patients. Good Luck to you!
Avatar n tn I have just switched from Mixtard/Actrapid to Lantus/Actrapid 3 days ago due to very poor blood sugar control at night and in the morning. The current dosage of Lantus is 15 units in the morning with additional 15 units of Actrapic before evety meal i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner. Blood sugar level in the morning shoots up to 15-16mmol (fasting), by noon it will remain at 9-12mmol (before lunch) and will gradually comes down to 4-5mmol before dinner.
Avatar n tn Hello Kristin, My sister & I are also a long-timers. She's had DM about 45 years and I've had it about 35 years. Your observation about your identity being wrapped up in having DM is quite profound, indeed. I've often thought about what I'd do with the mental & emotional energy if I didn't need to be doing so much "mental math." I don't know the answer, really ...
Avatar f tn You don't say what you were using before Lantus. If the change has resulted in better control of your blood sugars, that could be why you are gaining weight. (Assuming, of course, you haven't increased food or decreased exercise). Unfortunately, some type 1's do develop insulin resistance after many years especially if during that time you ate carbs pretty freely and bolused for it. Insulin resistance leads to weight gain.
Avatar n tn JDRF benefit, where we volunteered, and we took part in several pump discussions-- the pros and cons. She is staying on Lantus and Novolog for now partly out of vanity (teenage girl in a bikini, plus she's on a swim team) but also out of fear that she'll gain a lot of weight-- some people have told us that once it's so easy to eat at will (instead of giving yourself a shot), they gain a lot of weight.
Avatar m tn Larry: I'm not sure if you live outside of the USA, but my understanding is that Lantus is NOT available for use in a pen here in the US. My daughter just switched to Lantus via syringe & Novolog via pen after 8 years on an insulin pump. Her diabetes educator just gave her the Lantus prescription 3 days ago & said it is not available in any other form. I have read that outside the USA, however, it is sold in pen format.
Avatar n tn m on a good track to continue the AM Lantus injections. Im also increasing my Humalog to equal 1 unit for every 10 g. carbs vs 15. Depends on what activities I'm doing. Also, I am taking a sliding scale 1-4 additional Humalog units in a.m. to cover high fasting bg...in addition to covering breakfast carbs. It seems to correct well, and I'm off to a better day overall.
Avatar n tn of injections, my son went on the pump last August. We never used insulin pens. I found some information about lantus cartridges, but not a lot. Talk to your endocrinologist and pharmacist. http://products.sanofi-aventis.us/lantus/lantus_opti_pat_info.html ______________________________ 4)In your opinion, what is the best, most convenient and fastest glucose meter? We have used Lifescan's One Touch Ultra & Ultra Smart glucometers.
Avatar n tn I used Lantus for over 4 years with great success. I recently switched to a pump b/c of pregnancy but i have to say i miss my Lantus. One thing i think may help the original author of the question...switch you dose to the morning, rather than taking it at night. This way you get the coverage you need by the time dinner rolls around, but you don't go too low at night...by morning you should be ready for your next dose at a normal blood sugar. good luck!
Avatar n tn Scottlaw, We are volunteers here and not medical professionals. We do have a lot of experience with Type 1. It is time to check in with your end about this pattern. When we have a severe low, it does take time for our liver to restore the levels of glycogen needed to combat the next low.
Avatar f tn I seemed to be gaining a lot of weight since being on Lantus for the last two years as well I have mood swings and irritability and now started having severe lows right after injecting the Lantus (it usually happens if I bleed after my shot and has happened since switching to the Solostar disposable pen needle. Anyone else have any bad reactions to the Lantus.
Avatar n tn I am not a physician, but the mom of a type one diabetic on the pump. I have not heard of this type of side effect from Lantus. I would suggest you talk to your endocrinologist and tell him, you problem, he might be able to switch you r insulin type or see there are other things causing you to have dry eyes. Several types of medications can cause that condition. Hope this helps. Pleas let us know how it goes.
Avatar n tn I am in my second month of using Lantus with Humalog. At about week 2 or 3 I began experiencing sporadic rash in front of shins. Later, the itching and raised bumps appeared behing the knee at top of calves. Now I think it is appearing at left elbow. General feelings of itchiness accompany the outbreaks without apparent rash. I am attributing this to the new medication - Lantus - as all else remains basically stable in my life routine.
Avatar n tn When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
Avatar n tn I live on my own and would rather wake up with a slightly higher blood sugar, than end up in a coma. If lantus is something you are really concerned with I would highly recommend an insulin pump. My insulin pump is my savior. I only wish it was more water friendly! Best of luck.
Avatar n tn Hello, Ever since the beginning of summer, I've been waking up a few hours later than usual (usually 9:30 instead of 6:00 am)... Ever since, I've noticed that my morning blood sugar is very high (350-400). I take one dose of Lantus at 6:00 pm (But only 5 units, as I've constantly dropped it in the past to stop from going low during the day), and I inject Humalog before meals (1 unit for every 10 grams of carbs I eat). I am wondering what I can do to control my morning blood sugars?
Avatar f tn I always took mine around 11 pm but off Lantus now that I am on the pump..Good luck just try and keep taking it at the same time or around the same time, nothing bad will happen!!
Avatar m tn My daughter is 15, was on the pump but didn't like the way it felt and looked. Since she was diagnosed at age 7 her numbers are always high. It's affecting her social lfe as well as academically. She's up to 68u of Lantus at bed and corrects as needed. Even if she does have a few cookies, she takes coverage for it, but it never seems like it's ever enough. Any help would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn I have a question for you, are you on a pump? My nephew was on a pump like I am. The pump is filled with Humalog which works right now, so being without it all night and half the next day was why his sugars were so high. My nephew John was sick but coherent so when his monitor read 256, we thought he had the flu and so did the ER until blood was drawn, over 1800.
