Lantus vs insulin pump

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus vs insulin pump

lantus

Avatar n tn My daughter is currently on the insulin pump and only goes on Lantus/Humalog when her pump is malfunctioning. Thankfully (for us), this hasn't happened in so long that I cannot remember what the formula is to calculate the lantus. I do remember that prior to going on the pump, her endocrinologist switched her lantus shot from AM to PM as her morning bg's were higher than they wanted them.
Avatar n tn I am wondering whether this is some hormone related issue ,or whether I have developed some resistance vs humalog so it doesnt work well (and the lantus is too much). I have given up using any alcohol or doing demanding exercise(jogging) for a while becuase they make the matters worse (though i really enjoy exercising). any suggestions to why this is happening or how i can take care of this would be greatly helpful.
Avatar n tn It would involve one daily injection of a long-acting insulin like Lantus, which has a flat action profile over 24 hours. And a shot of Humalog or Novolog before each meal. Doing this would minimise the carb/insulin mismatch when you skip a meal. The basal/bolus regimen would give you more flexibility and better control. You may want to discuss this with your doctor.
Avatar n tn well, avantis (lantus) was not much help or all that interested they took the lot# of the lantus at my suggestion, it was not their belief that burning was related to an allergic reaction i am on my 3rd bottle of lantus w/same burning sensation, so it's not just the bottle, turns out there are no studies of lantus' long term effects in humans, which i found interesting, i have been reluctant to switch, but that seems to be where i am heading with this, i really wanted to stay with lantus
Avatar m tn Me to have had type i for thirty year my ac are better controlled with a insulin pump fill better now i get my humalog all the time.I was in a motocross crash in 2013 broke my clavicle all my ribs ripped my right lung hurt my pelvis and both hips 36 hours major surgeries 16 months of physical therapy.now i have diabetic neuropathy.legs are numb and feet are always hurting and cold and numb.but my blood sugars are always good my last a1c was 6.9 vs 11 five years ago when i got on a pump.
Avatar n tn Yes this happens a lot, when switching to lantus or the pump. Lantus is a long acting insulin that has no peak it gives you a steady basal rate similar to the insulin pump. I realize that it is hard to trust the the insulin enought to not have a snack, but it does work, and it is hard to resist the urge to react to the number.
Avatar n tn I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???. I get my supplies from the Military Hospital because I am a retired service member and they do not have the lantus solostar flex pen but they do have the levimer flex pen.
Avatar f tn You don't say what you were using before Lantus. If the change has resulted in better control of your blood sugars, that could be why you are gaining weight. (Assuming, of course, you haven't increased food or decreased exercise). Unfortunately, some type 1's do develop insulin resistance after many years especially if during that time you ate carbs pretty freely and bolused for it. Insulin resistance leads to weight gain.
Avatar n tn About a month ago, my doctor changed my long acting insulin from Novolin NPH to Lantus. This completely threw me off and I ended up being woken up by paramedics 3 times in 1 week. My blood sugar would be normal before bed and then by morning it had gone to 1.8. When I would eat a snack before bed to keep my blood sugar from dropping, I would go high - 13.0-15.0 on average. My doctor has now switched me back to my Novolin NPH and I am still having a hard time getting back on track.
Avatar f tn i was treated with himulin 30/70 insulin for a years and usually my fasting sugar is high (200-400) and now my new doctor give me lantus and apidra insulin instead of himulin insulin and now my fasting sugar reaches to 215 not exceeded. Are lantus and apidra combatable for me?? and what are the side effects of them??????????
Avatar n tn Have you asked your doctors about the insulin pump. It allows you to set a basal rate of insulin using fast acting insulins (Humalog) for very specific time periods. This will allow you to adjust dosages based on your very specific needs. I have had great success using it. Prior to using the pump I also had difficult time with overnight and morning blood glucose levels. My last A1C was 5.9 it really workds!!!
Avatar n tn Hello Human Pin Cushion, My son was diagnosed at age 3. He is now 10. My sister was dxd at age 24...she is now 33. My sister did the 72 continuous glucomse monitoring last year. I think it was right before she went on the pump, as well. My son went on the pump right before she did, but he never did the 72 hr. thing. My sis had it inserted in her stomach. My sister (before pump) was on lantus and humalog doing what they call a "poor man's pump".
Avatar n tn of injections, my son went on the pump last August. We never used insulin pens. I found some information about lantus cartridges, but not a lot. Talk to your endocrinologist and pharmacist. http://products.sanofi-aventis.us/lantus/lantus_opti_pat_info.html ______________________________ 4)In your opinion, what is the best, most convenient and fastest glucose meter? We have used Lifescan's One Touch Ultra & Ultra Smart glucometers.
Avatar n tn Hi again, Kristin, Actually, while the pump may not be the right thing for you, there is a big difference between Lantus & a pump's basal. When we take a shot o' Lantus (wonderful insulin that it is!), we get a steady impact from that dose for about 24 hours.
Avatar n tn Your doctor can advise you as to how the Lantus is affecting you, and how to adjust your food, and time you take the insulin. You might also want to ask about the insulin pump, Which does the same as the Lantus. It gives you a base line of insulin and you just dose your self when you eat according to the amount of carbohydrates you eat.
Avatar n tn If I take it at bedtime, I find that getting control of dinnertime BG is very difficult - I have to use 3-4 x the normal dose of insulin to get on top of it until it is time to take the Lantus. Then, I have a perfect fasting and control one day and it starts slowly eroding so that in 3 days I am dealing with BG's in the 200's.
Avatar n tn Dear tumtum, i am not a doctor but a person who has ben diabetic 32 years. i am now on an insulin pump and only use Novolog, a rapid acting insulin for both my background and bolus insulin needs. i would recommend you call the clinic as that very well could be a reaction to the Lantus and they may put you on a different background type insulin.
Avatar n tn I will have mid- to late-afternoon lows if I let the bottle of insulin get old. Lantus works by crystallizing after injection and the crystals slowly release all day. But in small print in the paperwork that comes with a bottle of Lantus, there is the warning that it should be replaced every 30 days. Unlike other insulins, that work the same until we use them up, the Lantus insulin does seem to lose its 24-hour release capability after about a month.
Avatar n tn I have been prescribed Lantus insulin for my diabetes. Since I have started using the injections (6 months), I have experienced dry and burning in my eyes. My doctor suggested that I get my tear ducts plugged to make sue I have enough tears to be able to wear contacts. I have worn contacts since 1976, and this is the first major problems that I have had. I now have to wear glasses at all times; maybe once every two weeks I can wear contacts for 3-5 hours.
Avatar m tn Larry: I'm not sure if you live outside of the USA, but my understanding is that Lantus is NOT available for use in a pen here in the US. My daughter just switched to Lantus via syringe & Novolog via pen after 8 years on an insulin pump. Her diabetes educator just gave her the Lantus prescription 3 days ago & said it is not available in any other form. I have read that outside the USA, however, it is sold in pen format.
Avatar m tn If you say that for every food consumed, the insulin dosed never seems like enough, you should look at increasing the fast acting insulin, as the carb ratios are likely too low. Correcting that ratio would also likely lower the amount of Lantus taken as well.
Avatar n tn I live on my own and would rather wake up with a slightly higher blood sugar, than end up in a coma. If lantus is something you are really concerned with I would highly recommend an insulin pump. My insulin pump is my savior. I only wish it was more water friendly! Best of luck.
Avatar n tn I use the Lantus/Quick-acting Insulin program, and the basics work beautifully if your doctor has given you the correct mathematical formulas to use to lower highs with quick-acting insulin or to cover the carbs you eat. I assume that you are counting the carbs and doing the math to figure out dosage? This only works IF: 1) Your dosage for the Lantus is correct, and this will vary for each person.
Avatar n tn Hello, Ever since the beginning of summer, I've been waking up a few hours later than usual (usually 9:30 instead of 6:00 am)... Ever since, I've noticed that my morning blood sugar is very high (350-400). I take one dose of Lantus at 6:00 pm (But only 5 units, as I've constantly dropped it in the past to stop from going low during the day), and I inject Humalog before meals (1 unit for every 10 grams of carbs I eat). I am wondering what I can do to control my morning blood sugars?
Avatar n tn s say after so many years, you become numb to symptoms that you used to feel (low blood sugars). The insulin pump can monitor your sugar for you at all times. It seems really worth looking into.
Avatar n tn Just know that in the future, if you want real flexibility and relatively easy diabetes maintenance, the pump is a great tool. In the meantime, a very long acting insulin with regular insulin at meals and some blood testing to keep you on track can give you excellent control and a pretty flexible lifestyle. For me, those were the keys to living a long healthy and happy life with diabetes.
