What I do know is that novolin (Regular) is a very outdated mode of insulin. The Lantus you were on was a newer basal (long-acting) insulin, but wouldn't work as well unless it was combined with a bolus (fast-acting) insulin before meals. That is the standard of care. I would see an endocrinologist and get on appropriate insulin regimen because 150-300 is much too high to sustain blood sugars.
I switched from lantus to novolog and the doses are different, I then switched to the 70/30 novolin (relion brand from wal mart) as it was much cheaper and the dose once again changed, although I am type 2 and monitor my levels closely, all insulin brands work differently so be careful and consult Dr.
I did finally settle on the 70/30 mix, you can get the pens but it is much cheaper to just inject yourself, I get the needles that are the same size as the pens.....
Hi, I'm a 36 yr old male, T1 diabetic since age 14. I'm currently taking Novolin N & R, 3 shots a day. I'm switching my insulin to Lantas and Novalog (4 shots per day). I have a couple questions that I didn't have time to ask the dr. yet.
1) Do I still make adjustments on the novalog according to my BS readings before eating? Ex: If it's high, do I take more than prescribed?
2) Do I make adjustments for a heavy day of exercise?
About a month ago, my doctor changed my long acting insulin from Novolin NPH to Lantus. This completely threw me off and I ended up being woken up by paramedics 3 times in 1 week. My blood sugar would be normal before bed and then by morning it had gone to 1.8. When I would eat a snack before bed to keep my blood sugar from dropping, I would go high - 13.0-15.0 on average. My doctor has now switched me back to my Novolin NPH and I am still having a hard time getting back on track.
My dr wants me to change from a sliding scale to taking Novolin 3 units each meal. Consistency is so important. Then another week I am changing to Lantus once a day from taking Levimir 2x a day. Change is hard for me but I need to remember to stay with my carbs small amount and protein and fat.
I did not start any other meds with the Lantus. I also became proactive last night and stopped the Lantus. I went back to my NovoRapid, Novolin NPH routine. Will see how I feel in a couple of days. Today went well. I want to find out before discussion with the dr. if this could be the problem, otherwise they will have nothing to compare it to because as I am finding out there are many different reactions as there are people.
Does anyone know a formula for amount of Lantus needed for a basal dose vs how many units fast-acting you take per carb? I have major swings. Yesterday was told by a nurse that the Lantus I take is really low compared to amount of Humalog I take, but she never told me HOW much she thought I should be taking.
I take 1.5 u Humalog per carb for all meals (for last 3 weeks - has changed many times). I'm supposed to take 11 u Lantus in am. My morning BS is usually 300-500.
When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
I am wondering whether this is some hormone related issue ,or whether I have developed some resistance vs humalog so it doesnt work well (and the lantus is too much). I have given up using any alcohol or doing demanding exercise(jogging) for a while becuase they make the matters worse (though i really enjoy exercising).
any suggestions to why this is happening or how i can take care of this would be greatly helpful.
I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???. I get my supplies from the Military Hospital because I am a retired service member and they do not have the lantus solostar flex pen but they do have the levimer flex pen.
My sister also has type 1 and takes lantus at bedtime and then takes humalog for correction AND to cover food with carbs, so in her case, if her BG is not High (if it IS under a particular number that she and her doc have discussed), then she does not need a correction shot AND if she was not going to eat anything containing carbs at that time, she would not need humalog to cover food, HOWEVER, she would still take her lantus shot at bedtime.
m on a good track to continue the AM Lantus injections. Im also increasing my Humalog to equal 1 unit for every 10 g. carbs vs 15. Depends on what activities I'm doing. Also, I am taking a sliding scale 1-4 additional Humalog units in a.m. to cover high fasting bg...in addition to covering breakfast carbs. It seems to correct well, and I'm off to a better day overall.
I had much better control when I was using humuln n and humulin r . I am now taking lantus and novolog .I have had to increase my dosages and am still having a hard time getting control of my blood sugars. My aic is 7.8 this quarter vs 8. last quarter. should I go back to using the older drugs that gave me better control?
My daughter was diagnosised with Type 1 Diabetes Aug 2008. We have learned how to inject insulin and check her blood sugar numbers. We keep her on a pretty strick diet to ensure that we keep her Blood Sugar Numbers between 80-180. The past two days she has been very low. We have tried to make sure that the insulin that we give her is only enough to cover the food that she has eaten.
However, just today, she woke up with her blood sugar #s at 64. She ate about 32 carbs for breakfast.
I started on insulin recently (Type II) and began with just one dose of Lantus first thing in the morning. My doctor is not yet sure if that will be sufficient (it would be nice!). But he mentioned if not then I will take a short acting type two hours AFTER my meals only if my blood sugar is high. I'm confused because everyone I talk to and everything I read refers to taking short acting BEFORE meals (t hold the blood sugar in control as food is absorbed).
Insulin reduces glucose [blood sugar] levels not elevate. Keep in mind many things elevate glucose levels; improper diet, lack of exercise, excessive body weight, even stress.
Test times:
1. - Lantus - before dosing to see your beginning day level
2. - Preprandial - right before you eat to get a baseline measurement
3. - Postprandial - 2-3 hours following a meal. This will tell you how the foods you ate affected your glucose level.
Also important to dose Lantus at the same time each day.
Before I used Lantis I used to use NPH-which is a shorter long acting inuslin-more like 8 hours. Have you tried giving your Novolin before you eat? I figure out how many carbohydrates I will eat and then give my dose accordingly-before I eat my meal. For every 12 grams of carbohydrates I take one unit of Humalog. I then do not go from high to low and do not have to play a game of catch up.

I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
I have noticed that no matter what I do the lantus stings after I inject it before I go to bed. Is this common? Is there any tricks anyone has learned that has helped them?
I am a type 1A diabetic with normal insulin sensitivity and predictable bg responses to insulin doses. Until now. I went on a reducing diet (high protein, next to 0 carbs, increased exercise) but never decreased my once daily PM dose of Lantus (10 units.) Immediately my AM bg's jumped to over 200 and stayed there. No hypoglycemia during sleep (I never woke up, anyway.)I could bring my daily bg's down with my shortacting insulin.
It may seem counterintuitive but hunger and glucose levels are two separate processes. Hunger is what your body craves vs excess sugar circulating in your blood stream. Make sense?

ive tried numerous pills for diabetes over the past 20 years. Efficacy never enough- so we tried lantus.
