Avatar f tn The answer is complicated. There is a universe of seizures that apparently respond well to dietary intervention and many that do not. Seizures have different etiologies. Bear in mind that there is cumulative brain damage with each seizure, and that under many circumstances the event would endanger your life and/or the lives of others. Proceed with great caution.
Avatar m tn If he doesnt switch the meds get a new Doc. Make goals for your epilepsy No seizures, no side effects, live a normal life. It helps to keep your hope up. Also have they talked about doing surgery? If not ask about it. There are also other types of treatment that dont have anything to do with meds. Ask your doc about the Ketogenic diet and see if you might be a good canidate for it. Its a hard diet but if it works its worth it.
Avatar m tn Meds are really the only way to reduce the frequency and intensity of seizures, though some people have seizure triggers (flashing light, for instance) and so avoiding triggers is important for them. The ketogenic diet (an extremely low carb diet, only to be undertaken with physician approval and supervision) can help some people with seizures, but is typically tried only after several different meds have failed to provide relief.
10094372 tn?1407761844 I had full body seizures from magnesium deficiency. Also look into the ketogenic diet (low carb, high fat diet). Here is one excerpt from Diet Doctor's article" How a Diet Change Can Free People from Epilepsy... "I’ve now gone four months without medication and no seizures. My diet is a 80/15/5 (fat/protein/carbs) ratio diet, and it works very well for me. My ketones are showing “green” in the mornings and “yellow” in the afternoon, using the Ketonix.
Avatar f tn Constipation is a side effect of a Ketogenic diet. If she has had severe constipation she could now have encopresis which might be causing the pooping problem. Speaking of the Ketogenic diet - I can find nothing in medical literature or on this site - http://www.aldf.com/lyme-disease/#chronicLymeDisease which would suggest that the ketogenic diet is a way to treat lyme. Granted, there is a lot out there from non medical sources. So you might want to kind of check out that.
Avatar f tn Could be, but the side effects I get are all well-known side effects of the med. That's interesting, though. I need to pay more attention to that. This particular med always looks the same, but I have others that change monthly, depending on which pharma company the generic is from.
Avatar m tn Sorry about your son. There is a movie you might want to watch concerning epilepsy. The movie is "First Do No Harm". It is a true story concerning the use of the Ketogenic Diet with good results in treating epilepsy in children. Sure wish you the best with your son.
Avatar m tn re on quite a cocktail of medications, and some of those (hydrocodone, in particular) can cause extreme fatigue/exhaustion, plus they have other side effects. You might want to research all their side effects and see if they might be part of your problem.

6990909 tn?1435275816 Has anybody tried a ketogenic diet for health issues? I'm just trying to find holistic ways to deal with RA. I have tried focusing on foods with anti-inflammatory properties but am continuing the search. Thanks for your input!
559697 tn?1243286385 My granddaughter has Lennox Gastatut and we are going o try the "Ketogenic" diet next month. It can reduce seizures or even stop them completely in 50% of children. If it means even reducing her doses it would be very worth it. She takes Keppra and Topomax right now and the seizures have reduced by half maybe, so still about 50 absence seizures a day.
Avatar m tn just checked what a ketogenic diet is, this type of diet is extremely unhealthy and damages livers of any person hbver or not The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet: high fat damages the liver adequate-protein is ok but from vegetable or little white meat, no red meat, no diaries low-carbohydrate leads nowhere, it is processed and refined carbohydrates to increase blood glucose which makes damage, so the problems is refined cereals not not carbohydrates the a
Avatar n tn Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert and able to see clearly. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase some of the side effects of Topamax, and can also increase the risk of a seizure. Ketogenic or "ketosis" diets that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates can increase the risk of kidney stones.
Avatar f tn If you have read about autism it is a marked impairment in social, communication and the presence of a repetitive behavior. How is his speech, is he talking? It appears the onset of his seizures were when he was one year old. Did anyone at the hospital back in 2009 refer you to a neurologist for the seizures? What does your pediatrician say? You should look at some of the screening tests like the m-chat to see if there red flags for autism.
Avatar f tn It had been 4 days and I am getting really worried. My dog has all the side-effects mentioned by others on this forum - weakness, almost-comatose state, sleep all the time, can't walk, urinate/defecate unconsciously, etc. But the two things I am most concerned about is: 1) that he can't eat or drink by himself and has to be helped using a syringe. He may have the extreme hunger or thirst mentioned as side-effects but I can't tell because of this.
Avatar m tn Taking a different drug to block the side effects of the first drug is likely to lead to a pyramid of drugs, side effects, and cost. Recommend you look at other ways to help manage your diabetes. Victoza is not for everyone. Eating a low carb diet can also be very helpful in diabetes management. I personally try to eat ketogenic diet. This diet is abundant in meat, eggs, vegetables (except starchy ones), and unprocessed oils.
Avatar n tn t want to start Keppra because of the side effects, However after having a 3 week free spell (we thought we were out of it) on New Years 2015 he had seizures on and off all day. This had never happened before, this continued for two days resulting in his left arm and leg not moving.

Avatar f tn 5 months now and thank goodness her seizures have stopped. She was having grand mal seizures every other day after some time...they just kept getting closer together. I do see that she is more hungry than normal but one thing that is differant from what I am seeing in the other posts is that she is actually getting up earlier and earlier every morning? I am trying to put her to bed later but when she normally would get up at 6:30, became 6:00 and now 5:00 am.

Avatar m tn After 1 week on this dosage, we called the vet as side effects were really awful. He suggested that we half the dose which we did do. He seems a bit better, but is still very disoriented and is urinating in the house. He also seems to be bumping into things and reading other posts, some owners have mentioned blindness. Is this a side effect of pb, and if so will it go away?another concern is our vet is waiting one month before doing blood work. Should we have this done sooner?
