My mouth will not open and close evenly and when I lay down my jaw locks up and I can’t open my mouth. When I’m up it always pops on the right side opening and closing my mouth while talking and chewing. I would like to know why it does this and what is causing this and if it can be treated. I am in pain everyday with this problem and it is very frustrating. It started a few years ago and it is getting worse. Please help!! Thanks!!
I haven't found a solution yet. What I should mention is that it's not exactly opening my mouth that helps. It's opening my jaw/teeth...I can keep my lips sealed, so that no air can enter, but it still helps. This makes me think that my issue is not eustachian tube dysfunction.
Sometimes when I'm eating my jaw cracks really loudly in the side of my mouth. It's only happened a couple of times and not very often and it doesnt hurt too much just a little bit when I open my mouth wide. But now I'm okay, there's no pain and even when there was, there was very little. And sometimes when I move my jaw I think I can hear some sort of a grating sound from the side of my mouth. What does it mean?
A month or so ago, I once opened my mouth and my jaw quickly locked and unlocked very in a painful sharp. This type of pain isn't as frequent, though. I have difficulty opening my mouth, chewing, move my jaw, etc. I visited my nurse practitioner and told her about the situation. She said she could not do anything about it as my jaw would not lock or click when she examined my jaw.
My question is do I present TMJ symptoms and is it possible I may have it?
When I try to open my mouth fully, the pain is very severe and also, I have headache, the pain is near the eyebrow and behind my neck. I have on and off fever and chills and also nauseousness and dizziness sometimes. My hearing in the right ear is normal and no infection either. Please let me know exactly what it is related to and what doctor shud i seek if needed?

I noticed on Sunday afternoon when I was eating lunch that my jaw was hurting - hurt to open my mouth and hurt while chewing. I think I have TMJ, although no dentist has agreed with me, but my jaw clicks and I can see it shift when I open my mouth. So now I have this jaw pain that almost seems connected somehow to my neck -- just not sure if it's a possibility?? And how can I relieve it??!!??

Hi, A couple of days ago my jaw has suddenly started to click when I open my mouth wide and move my jaw from side to side. The clicking is also accompanied by a dull ache in the same area. I am very worried that my jaw may suddenly lock or dislocate, is this possible? Should I go and see my dentist about this sudden clicking?
After following rules of no gum chewing and chewy things such as steak etc. And an idiot me I had forgotten to ask him if it was due to the extraction of the wisdom teeth. And now before I came across this I did some research about it and I have found alot of things of people having the same problems with the dislocating jaw. But my absolute main question is this due to the extraction of the wisdom teeth?? Like from opening my mouth a little too wide that they done damage???
head aches in the temples, click/pop in the jaw when opening my mouth more than a few mm, jaw dislocating and clicking when I talk and chew. My jaw locking and being difficult to open. sometimes one side will lock or be stiff sometimes both. Finding steak so tiring to chew I'd give in and leave it - I love steak! A constant ache in the jaw, sometimes fuzzy ears. - that's my jaw been sore to touch my cheeks near my ears, feeling bruised.
i am not perfect, and i have not been to a dentist in over a year. i try and brush every day, but if i dont chewing gum or mouth wash works for me.
when buying a new brush the other day, i bought some floss because it had been sometime since i had used that stuff, and i remembered it felt pretty good to use it. I used it and it was not very fun. it especially hurt where i had fillings done before. the next day while i was at work my jaw started throbbing in horrible pain.

I just had a root canal and have more pain than when I first went to the dentist. If the bone is infected, should I be concerned it could spread to other parts of my body-being in the bone?
I'm hoping you will respond to this as it seems you have a lot of expertise.... scotma has replied and I also appreciate his feedback... I have multiple sounds on what I consider my "bad side" ONLY on closing (NOT on opening). Also my jaw deviates significantly on opening and the other way when closing. On opening, the deviation returns to midline on full open. I can open my mouth wide, but I do feel discomfort in the joints.
More than 30 years ago, I had a facial injury that caused dislocation of my jaw. My jaw has ached ever since and I have problems opening my mouth. X-rays show that the jaw has "squared-off" an area of my skull, so I guess there is some cartilege missing. I have constant grinding (bone on bone?) and, according to my dentist, my jaw muscles spasm about a dozen times each time I open my mouth.
On Monday felt a little pain and discomfort which gradually increased through Tuesday and still experience pain and discomfort on wednesday. When mouth is closed there is no pain. When moving jaw from side to side, no pain. I experience tthe pain and discomfort when opening my mouth. II also noticed my face get a little puffy on that side on Tuesday.
Do think my jaw is broken, dislocated, or just bruised?
soft food diet, not chewing gum, moist heat applied to the jaw joints (I love my rice pack) no over extending your jaw (opening your mouth super wide) do things to keep the jaw joint as relaxed as possible...the jaw and hips are two the the biggest areas to hold tension...yoga helps, massage helps...you can even massage your own jaw joint, face muscles and neck muscles, but if you can get massages it's worth it!
