Common Questions and Answers about Jaw pain opening mouth

Avatar f tn If there is jaw pain on opening your mouth, it could just be the trauma causing a temporomandibular joint disorder. To get some relief you can try massaging the sore muscles. You have to press on muscles of your face to look for sore points. Then massage these points with short strokes. To massage the masseter muscles on each side of your jaw, place your thumb inside your mouth and squeeze the thick muscle in your cheek with your fingers.
Avatar n tn My mouth will not open and close evenly and when I lay down my jaw locks up and I can’t open my mouth. When I’m up it always pops on the right side opening and closing my mouth while talking and chewing. I would like to know why it does this and what is causing this and if it can be treated. I am in pain everyday with this problem and it is very frustrating. It started a few years ago and it is getting worse. Please help!! Thanks!!
Avatar f tn On Monday felt a little pain and discomfort which gradually increased through Tuesday and still experience pain and discomfort on wednesday. When mouth is closed there is no pain. When moving jaw from side to side, no pain. I experience tthe pain and discomfort when opening my mouth. Avatar m tn A week has gone by from all four impacted wisdom teeth were surgically removed. My jaw on the right side feels like it is locked. I can only open my jaw 1 inch. When I try to open it farther I get excruciating pain and it won't open. Left side is fine. I was very swollen the first three days after surgery. What should I do?
Avatar m tn I have had a nagging pain in the back of my mouth for almost 3 months now. The pain is located in the hard palate area above my molars on the right side. Dental X-rays have revealed that nothing is wrong. My wisdom teeth are still intact, but 3 dentists and 2 oral surgeons have assured me that they do not need to come out and would not be causing the pain. The pain is like a sharp pressure in that area of my mouth. Almost feels like a sinus infection in that palate/gum region.
Avatar f tn The problem is i only heard it pop one time after that my jaw started tighting it keep my mouth opening big due to the tightning also the pain that why i think i may have dislocated jaw
Avatar n tn I had my lower left side wisdom tooth removed about a week and five days ago and I am slowly experiencing more and more pain in my upper jaw area. I am having diffculties opening my mouth because of the pain and soreness. What I need to know is this normal to have pain in the jaw area after a wisdom tooth extraction? And if so, how long should I expect to experience this pain?
451674 tn?1205658922 The problem I have is the first bite of food I put in my mouth causes SEVERE pain in joints of my jaw. This pain is excrutiating at first, I have to grab my jaws just to be able to handle the pain. It doesnt last long, maybe about 10 seconds. The dentist told me it was caused from my jaw being out of line, having so many missing back teeth. She said I could have surgery, where they would break my jaw and realign it. Whatever!! No one is breaking my jaw. I just live with it unfortunatly.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am 28 yrs old. I have been having pain behind my right ear on opening my mouth fully for about 2 weeks now. I do not see any redness or swelling surrounding the jaw or ear, the pain seems to be internal. I have no problem with my teeth or gums either. When I try to open my mouth fully, the pain is very severe and also, I have headache, the pain is near the eyebrow and behind my neck. I have on and off fever and chills and also nauseousness and dizziness sometimes.
5555569 tn?1369800168 This is the jaw joint and inflammation of this joint can cause pain on opening the mouth and tenderness on palpation behind the ear. The pain could also be due to an enlarged and inflamed lymph node or salivary gland enlargement. Please consult a dentist for assessment. He may ask for blood tests and an X ray. In the meantime take OTC acetaminophen for the pain. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn A month or so ago, I once opened my mouth and my jaw quickly locked and unlocked very in a painful sharp. This type of pain isn't as frequent, though. I have difficulty opening my mouth, chewing, move my jaw, etc. I visited my nurse practitioner and told her about the situation. She said she could not do anything about it as my jaw would not lock or click when she examined my jaw. My question is do I present TMJ symptoms and is it possible I may have it?
Avatar f tn I haven't found a solution yet. What I should mention is that it's not exactly opening my mouth that helps. It's opening my jaw/teeth...I can keep my lips sealed, so that no air can enter, but it still helps. This makes me think that my issue is not eustachian tube dysfunction.
Avatar n tn I still have a hard time keeping my jaw open at the dentist or opening my mouth wide. Unfortunately, this sometimes can happen when having teeth extracted. It isn't that your dentist did something wrong necessarily either, it is just one of those unfortunate possible outcomes. I hope this is not what has happened to you, but don't force it, get it checked out and possibly see a specialist for a second opinion.
Avatar n tn hey all im 15 and i was jus wondering if it was possible 4 me 2 have a wisdom tooth at my age and im having jaw pain and all my molars are loose, could this be causing the jaw pain(it hurts only when i yawn or open my mouth too fast) thx
Avatar n tn Inside of my right tounge was sore , This morning i woke up my whole right side of my neck is sollowen and theres pain when i touch it on my neck where the glands and my jaw bone below my ear is sore . Help !?
998476 tn?1249839997 It may be that the jaw or muscles that open your mouth are traumatized by the extractions. Try to take pain medication, ice/warm pack the muscles and try to stretch it out from time to time. Also, let your doctor know in case its an infection and antibiotics are needed. Try to go on a soft or liquid diet and your opening should increase gradually but it may take up to several weeks to fully open again.
Avatar f tn s been getting progressively worse, notably since August I can't open my mouth properly anymore and no I haven't been diagnosed officially by a doctor, last time I went with two complaints, jaw and heart so she told me my heart one was more serious and ignored my jaw. My osteopath told me I had tmj back in December and has been providing temporary relief (an evening free of jaw pain) but I'm wondering what else can I do?
Avatar f tn I think I have TMJ, although no dentist has agreed with me, but my jaw clicks and I can see it shift when I open my mouth. So now I have this jaw pain that almost seems connected somehow to my neck -- just not sure if it's a possibility?? And how can I relieve it??!!?? Any input is appreciated!
Avatar f tn Two weeks ago. Just over a week later I noticed pain opening my mouth. My whole left side, but predominantly my upper left jaw. I can't open my mouth more than about an inch and my tongue can't poke fully out at all. Together with that I have a nasty taste in my mouth. Any ideas what it could be? I had an injection top and bottom. Top one hurt quite a bit. The pain was diminished a bit this morning till I thought about trying to open my mouth a bit!
Avatar n tn You have symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction - TMJ dysfunction. Symptoms can include pain in the chewing muscles or jaw joint; limited movement or locking of the jaw; clicking, popping, or grating sounds when opening your mouth; trouble chewing to name a few. TMJ dysfunction can be caused by conditions including injury, a bad bite, stress, anxiety, hypothyroidism, magnesium deficiency.
Avatar n tn Ok, I think I have tmj, I have problems opening my jaw, It only opens 1 inch wide. And I read on the internet all about tmj, it's damaged nerves, and things like that. Everytime I get a sore throat this always happens. EVERYTIME? I don't know why this always happens like that. And I would like to know some treatments to get rid of, It's kind of sad when I can't even stick a spoon, or a french fry in my mouth. Please Help me, I would really appreciate it. Symptoms now: 1.
Avatar m tn Whenever I close my mouth after opening it wide, the left side of my jaw pop and it hurt a little. It felt like the bones kind of stuck together. I would like to know what is the problem.
Avatar f tn The pain in your jaw from opening and shutting your mouth can be TMJ. The over-bite, under-bite,even a tilt in the upper area across the area of top of lip area or, and the bottom area bone can cause the jaw to slip in & out of place in the area the jaw bone connects to the skull. An oral surgeon can check for this problem. TMJ can be heredity. You can go to a specialist in neck and spine. If you did damage to the neck they may not find it in xrays, but it can be found in MRI.
Avatar f tn I still feel pain when I touch my tooth and still after 3 weeks unable to open my mouth without pain around my Jaw. Please advice me what might be the reason.
Avatar n tn Also a sensation that my tounge is too large in my mouth. I now also have a very distinct Tremor in my lower jaw and my mouth seems to be watering a lot. It imptoves slightly if I eat. I was diagnosed earlier in the year with Thyroiditis. Which supposedly got better. I have a serious brain fog and my eyes are very light sensitive. I have struggled with frequent herpes virus out breaks for over 30years. Could I be getting Mild meningitis?
Avatar f tn I also notice that when opening and closing my mouth it seems like the alignment of my jaw is wrong, the right side appears to pop out when my mouth opens and the left does not. I never had any jaw problems before having my wisdom tooth out, my jaw had never even locked before. It is very frustrating and I just want to know what could have happened and how I might make it better?!?!
2112219 tn?1334286044 Considering your symptoms of point tenderness and pain on opening the mouth, your symptoms could be due to temporomandibular (TMJ) joint arthritis. This is the jaw joint and inflammation of this joint can cause pain on opening the mouth and tenderness on palpating behind the ear. As you have had a recent throat infection, it could also be a lymph node enlargement. Please consult a dentist for assessment. He may even ask for blood test and an X ray.
