Imitrex migraine medication

Common Questions and Answers about Imitrex migraine medication

imitrex

Avatar m tn Hi there! Short answer: yes it's usually safe, I take something like it, and yes it usually works. Long answer: I am so glad that you asked about imitrex! I take a triptan, like imitrex, and personally I think that triptans are the best treatment for acute migraines, and they are also the most prescribed medication for acute migraines.
1051752 tn?1253833456 Advil is not migraine medication and can cause problems by making headaches worse. Imitrex is migraine medication that is specifically for migraine and it will stop a migraine. Most migraines do not come with aura. Take that into consideration when you get a headache that feels exactly like your regular migraine just without an aura. That means you are having a migraine. You don't need an aura to have a migraine. Take your migraine medication for a migraine.
Avatar f tn I don't have much of a question, but wanted to introduce myself. I've periodically had migraines throughout my life, but they were never very often. However, that changed since I've been diagnosed with lupus and fibromyalgia (as well as other chronic pain issues). Especially since the fibro was discovered (about 15 years ago), my migraines have increased in frequency. The week before last, I had 3 in that week alone.
656111 tn?1273820739 Well, I had problem with script to fill Imitrex medicine couple years ago.... it only supplys 9 and only covers one any type of migraine medication PER month. When I ran out of it, I asked my doctor to give me script for more Imitrex and I dropped script off at Walgreens then few minutes later, pharmacist told me that insurance was not covering that...
Avatar f tn but, out of all of the triptans, the ONLY triptan that has shown this is Maxalt, not Imitrex. So, Imitrex is not a type of medication that you can become dependent on physically. So please don't worry about becoming dependent on the medication!!! Use it when you are in pain if it works!! Please do not suffer because you are worried about becoming dependent on a medication you have no chances of becoming dependent on.
709686 tn?1277432159 of all migraines hit me about 2pm. When I got home I took a 10mg Imitrex tablet and laid down. Now these Imitrex tablets make me very sleepy so once the headache began to fade I went soundly asleep around 6pm and slept until 6am. Since I skipped dinner last night I was quite weak this morning until I ate breakfast. I only took one 10mg norco tablet during this time as I am on my "taper" schedule. I was quite proud of myself.
635402 tn?1270162477 From a strict treatment point of view, yes, the medication probably is better than Imitrex alone for a migraine. The reason for this is twofold. First of all, several years ago, Dr. Silberstein of the Jefferson Headache Center was able to demonstrate through research, that Imitrex combined with naprosyn taken at the onset of a migraine was better in treating that migraine than either drug alone. Such a combination is deemed synergistic, meaning basically that two plus two equals ten.
Avatar f tn I am pretty loyal to Imitrex. But always at max dose of 200mg. There is a new drug from makers of Imitrex called Trixamet. It is Imitrex plus an NSAID. I got a sample from my doc. I loved it. Trixamet is supposed to be covered by any insurance that takes Imitrex, but mine doesn't cover it. Maybe yours will. Hope I helped.
Avatar f tn In my opinion, that is a very odd medication for a migraine. Usually triptans like Imitrex or Maxalt are given for migraines and work very well. Usually the Fiorinal is given for tension headaces. Good luck and I hope you can find the perfect medication for you.
Avatar f tn Once a migraine attack has started it is very hard to end. You need strong drugs for that. Do you usually have migraine attacks that last this long? Maybe you should see a doctor?
518798 tn?1295212279 I have really bad PMS and migraine headaches a few or so days before. I recently got an Rx for Imitrex and not only did it get rid of my migraine, it also gave me some unexpected energy, alterness, and a slight high combined with my pain meds for Fibromyalgia. Nothing has pulled me out of a bad PMS slump with extreme fatigue and feeling like I am being poisoned by my hormones like Imitrex. I would be tempted to use it when I don't have a migraine during a bad PMS slump.
Avatar n tn Topamax is an anticonvulsant drug which is used for migraine prophylaxis. One of the side effects of this medication is headache. Headache is known to occur in about 25% patients taking topamax. If you continue to get headaches please discuss this with your doctor. You may need dosage adjustment or switched to an alternate drug. Take care!
Avatar f tn I am having trouble determining whether my migraine medication, Imitrex, is one them. Sumitriptan and naproxen are not on the list, but since this drug narrows blood vessels, I wonder if it's best not to take it before surgery.
Avatar n tn After last weeks migraine and realizing the pressure and pain was now back, I went to see my doctor and he prescribed Imitrex to take at the onset of migraine symptoms. My hope is that this will prevent the lingering effects from setting in, and will hopefully allow me to avoid the months of pain following these migraines.
1103688 tn?1257894552 Another possibility is a class of medication called the Ergot alkaloids, which were the first line of acute treatment for migraine headache prior to the invention of triptans. A famous migraine medication in the class of medication is called "Cafergot". Cafergot may be an option for you, it contains ergotamine tartrate and caffeine.
557111 tn?1219712047 Thanks, my mom has some serious migrains and she takes imitrex and it helps a lot. I did take an over the counter migraine med with caffeine in it and it helped a lot. I am doing good though other than this dam* headache!
1508698 tn?1360215710 I have tried imitrex b4 and I had bad reaction. Usually the OTC works but when I get a really bad migraine it doesn't help. Thanks for the advice.
Avatar n tn I am taking imitrex also but its not really helping. It stops the migraine from getting worse but not with taking it away. I am going to talk to the Doc about the shots you can give yourself. You sound alot like me...after my doctors appointment I can let you know what they tell me if you would like. I know I havent helped much but I just wanted to let you know that you not alone, I understand what you are going through. Its awful!
1389553 tn?1280782127 antidepressants, anticonvulsants, beta blockers and calcium channel blockers. You are currently taking an anticonvulsant. Since it is not working, you should try a different class of preventative migraine medication. There are also multiple medications within each class, so even if one doesn't work, it is very likely that another medication will. Botox Injections are also used to prevent migraines and it is quite effective for most. Yes, estrogen is connected to migraines.
591470 tn?1218975186 Have you tried Imitrex tabs or the Imitrex shot. When I was taking a course of chemo I had the worst migraines ever and the Imitrex really helped me. It gave me slight light headedness but well worth the side effects. It is by prescription. If you haven't tried it.....give it is shot. It might help.
Avatar m tn Also, it might be a good idea if you got a referral to a neurologist as they are the type of doctor that deals with migraines and migraine auras. A neurologist might be able to prescribe a type of medication that can help stop the migraine aura once it starts. These medications are usually called triptans. A really fast acting triptan is best, such as a quick dissolve tablet or a nasal spray.
