Common Questions and Answers about Humulin is a type of insulin that is obtained

humulin

Avatar n tn Most endocrinologists will put a diabetic patient who uses insulin on a sliding scale of insulin, depending on what the blood glucose is when you test before a meal. The ideal is of course for glucose levels to be in the "normal" before meal range of between something like 70-126 (different doctors use slightly different numbers, but this is pretty typical). But we can't always have the ideal numbers -- if we DID, we wouldn't be diabetic!
Avatar m tn There is no doctor responding on this board, only peers. Your C-peptide is very low which means you are not making sufficient insulin. I'm not familiar with that type of insulin; I assume it is a long-acting (basal) type that you take just once or twice a day? It sounds as if you might now also need bolus (before meals) injections. How are your post-prandial numbers (two hours after meals)? Some people just go to MDI's (multiple daily injections) and some go to the pump.
Avatar n tn If your blood sugar is high enough to need insulin, then you do need insulin. But there are other types of insulin available. Maybe you are reacting to Humulin N.
1242273 tn?1269552203 The test to determine type is the GAD antibody test, (Type 1 is antibody positive, Type 2 is not) very few regular doctors know about it, you probably need to see an endocrinologist. Also the c-peptide test will help in this diagnosis by showing how much insulin your body is making.
Avatar m tn I believe the poster is referring to one of the Regular insulins being given on a sliding scale. This is an outdated method of using insulin. My suggestion is to see an endo and get put on a regimen of basal and bolus (long acting and short acting) insulin and learn how to match your carbs to your insulin dose. You don't want to continue to have highs like that on a regular basis.
Avatar f tn Because abnormal blood sugar levels induced by injectable insulin can cause you to have a fatal automobile accident and injure or endanger others, it is not a drug that should be administered except under a physician's supervision - at least until the situation is well in hand. "Reading Up" on the units to administer is not a responsible action.
Avatar f tn I asked about a 30 day supply of Novolog and it is $299.00 which is impossible for me to get since I am on a strict budget due to not working anymore.
Avatar m tn I had much better control when I was using humuln n and humulin r . I am now taking lantus and novolog .I have had to increase my dosages and am still having a hard time getting control of my blood sugars. My aic is 7.8 this quarter vs 8. last quarter. should I go back to using the older drugs that gave me better control?
Avatar m tn I use long 24 hour insulin with a rapid insulin last 4 hours. the long insulin is for my fating and the rapid is for high BG and food. easy to adjust and easy to get good numbers.
Avatar f tn ve been injecting Byetta for nearly two years (twice a day). My husband saw that there is a class action suit against the manufacturer because of side effects, damage to the pancreas. I did some reserch on line and found there are all kinds of side effects, damage to the kidneys, liver and G.I. issues. For the last year I have had IBS and now my blood sugar is climbing, (only my fasting). Needless to say I have quit taking the injections because I'm afraid it has caused these changes.
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Insulin glargine is also known as Lantus. Lantus, just like all insulins, can stimulate the body into causing fat production, so it is possible to gain weight on Lantus.
Avatar f tn The person tests their blood sugar before each meal and at bed time and compares the result to the scale prescribed by the doctor and inject the appropriate amount of insulin (if indicated). It is a good idea to record these levels in a journal so it can be shared with the doctor. The idea is to keep the blood sugar at a steady, consistent level. If your friend's sugar is not consistent, he or she needs to see their health care provider for a thorough check up.
Avatar n tn I was a little surprised that your doctor put you on an oral medication after having done so well for so many years on insulin. I am not a doctor, but my understanding of Type I is that insulin is the only medication that will work since our bodies are not producing any insulin. I think it is unusual for a Type I Diabetic to be taken off insulin and to be able to remain in control with diet and exercise alone. But, then again, diabetes does affect each person differently.
743006 tn?1232596733 i am a recovering heroin addict using methadone as my my recovery method and i have diabetes 2 and take insulin daily as well, i take 100mg methadone liquid and 20 units of Humulin N type insulin once nitely. during the day i seem ok and around 5 or 6 pm i start to go thru withdrawls really bad to wher i want drugs so far i forced myself to go to bed and havent used again i been clean since the day after thanksgiving this year a few months.
2094297 tn?1345389093 Basal Bolus approach (separate fast and long acting insulin) is going to give you better control that the 70/30. Do you have a carb-insulin ratio. You need to dose fast acting insulin appropriately to cover carbs/protein at each meal. other good books are Using Insulin - By John Walsh and Think Like a Pancreas. Don't worry how much insulin you need to take. Just take what you need to keep your blood sugars more stable.
Avatar f tn What I do know is that novolin (Regular) is a very outdated mode of insulin. The Lantus you were on was a newer basal (long-acting) insulin, but wouldn't work as well unless it was combined with a bolus (fast-acting) insulin before meals. That is the standard of care. I would see an endocrinologist and get on appropriate insulin regimen because 150-300 is much too high to sustain blood sugars.
Avatar n tn My experience has been that Lantus is rarely a problem as far as hypoglycemia is concerned, so I doubt that it alone is the problem.
Avatar m tn Sorry this is such a late response, but no, Humilin R (regular insulin) is not a substitue for Novolog, which is a fast acting insulin. However, her insulin supply is still good for up to 30 days after taking it out of refrigeration. Hope she made it there OK and you had a nice visit.
Avatar f tn A. Taking a rapider insulin (Humulin Regular, if that is what you are taking, is much slower than Humalog -- ask you doctor if switching is in order) B. Taking the mealtime insulin earlier before eating C. Warming the injection site by massaging it, running it under warm water, or exercising the underlying muscle D. Choosing foods that are slow to digest (low glycemic index foods) E. Adding something acidic, such as vinegar, to your meals F.
Avatar f tn I am a diabetic on insulin I am 11wks today I was scared at first but what get me through is knowing this is what I have to do for my little one and myself that is what get me through it good luck
Avatar n tn I use humulin n as a long acting insulin , generally about 45 units a day , and humulog to keep my sugars down , lately I have been checking my sugars every half hour to try and get a grip on them , my pharmasist told me that humulog lasts up to 2 hours , I have checked my sugars after injecting it , and it generally takes 1/2 an hour to come down 6 points ( 13 to 7 ) but I have become very brittle , a bowl of porage , no milk , can send me up 6 points , should I be using my humulin R as well as
Avatar n tn Hi, im 25 yrs old, i have had diabetes since i was 5 had it under control until turned 19 medical card got taken away from gov, thought I could keep it manageable but it's gotten way out of control all I want to do is drink(non alcohol) but not really water just like juice and stuff. Really hard to stop. Wat can I do?
Avatar f tn what are the food that has high carb? do rice and bread contain large portion of carbs? my doctor never told me about that so I have been living that way for almost 10 years...it s not until now I discovered this "carb counting" thingy...
Avatar n tn His doctor said to try 15...but we had already done 12 by the time that I spoke with her, and she said if that is doing good, then I should keep it there for now. Now, they are changing his mealtime insulin to Novalog and it is in pens...so, now we get to figure this out too. LOL I am so sympathetic towards diabetics. Especially type one. My aunt was diagnosed at age 7 and died at 32, b/c she didn't take care of herself. I love being involved and able to help. It gives me a great feeling.
Avatar n tn I decided to try giving my shots in my rear and I have had a lot of success...and the insulin is absorbed better there for me because I do a lot of walking and bending to pick things up. I also remember this happening when I was younger to my arms and that's why my doctors had me move to my stomach...too much built up in my arms and the needle just wasn't long enough to get the insulin through. I know sometimes the butt is hard to reach, but the thighs are a good place to try as well.
Avatar n tn Why is it that Lantus requires a prescription when other long-acting types of insulin do not? I feel like I should be able to go to a drugstore and purchase any type of insulin that I choose without a prescription.
Avatar n tn 6 weeks pregnant and still on metformin waiting for specialist to let me know if they will be switching me to insulin or a or something else. However I haven't really had a whole lot of morning sickness then just a little bit of nausea and I was just wondering if you were allowed to continue the meds throughout your whole pregnancy?
Avatar n tn snacks. Type IIs sometimes use a combination of insulin and oral meds; some Type IIs use just insulin; others use just oral meds; still others can gain control with diet & exercise. The point is, needs differ across individuals, and for each of us, our needs change over time. Encourage your mom to work more closely with her medical team. Perhaps she'd welcome your going with her to her appointments.
