If you are in US I understand you can buy the old insulins (Humulin N and R over the counter in wallmart quite cheaply). This will be better than none. You can also get cheaper meter and strips the same way. I assume you do know how to use insulin properly.
You need to check how you can get assistance. Do you have a Dr? Can you get access to any assistance. Sounds like you might be in trouble with really high blood sugars. Juice can make your sugars very high.
I have been a type 1 diabetic for over 16 years and have always been taking around 6 units of R in the morning with some N. That has seemed to work fine until recently my lunch blood sugar levels have been sky high. I keep adding more R (i'm not at 10 units) and it seems like the R is not working at all. I have even changed the bottle just in case there was something wrong with that vial and nothing has changed.
Zoe - I think Windchimes meant humulin insulin not huminsulin. Humulin is considered an intermediate acting insulin as its duration is 24 hours, but this can vary per individual. LANTUS, on the other hand, is considered long lasting as its duration is up to 36 hours.

You're a good friend to be concerned about your friends well being. If "N" is Humulin N, there is no "standard" Humulin N dose that will work for all people or even for the same person in all situations. This applies to other insulin types too. If your friends at home test results show low glucose levels "several times per week" it is time to have his/her insulin dosages re-evaluated by their physician.
My bf has been changes to Lantis one time at bedtime. It seem that he may be doing very well on it. The concern I have is about using Humulin R as your mealtime shot. I'm having trouble with how to know his carbohydrate-insulin ratio. I think I'm goind to start at 12 carbs/ 1 unit...Does this sound like a reasonable place to start? Humulin, more commonly called Humulin NPH, and even more commonly called just NPH, is a long acting insulin. It is absorbed more slowly, and it's effects last longer, about 12 hours. Usually NPH is used in combination with one of the fast acting insulins. An alternative long acting insulin would be Lantus.
I had much better control when I was using humuln n and humulin r . I am now taking lantus and novolog .I have had to increase my dosages and am still having a hard time getting control of my blood sugars. My aic is 7.8 this quarter vs 8. last quarter. should I go back to using the older drugs that gave me better control?
Hello I am new to novolin My Dr has me on 15 units twice a day after being on lantus for 1 year and it just did not work at all for me under 29 units was not enough and over 20 units bottomed my sugar out
My question is and this also did this when i was on lantus is it normal after injecting yourself with insulin that my blood sugar spikes up I am talking it can be 150 and after the injection it will jump up to 300 with in 3 hours is this normal or is it just me I know I am not making sense

I have been using Humulin R and just started using humulog in combination with this to try and put weight back on , lost about 25lbs . I seem to be having trouble with the humulog . I know our readings are different in canada , 5 to 7 is normal.I have had sugars as high as 32 and used 10 units of humalog , half an hour later I am 34 , I don't understand this ? What is the ratio of humalog to carbs ? I had the flu and I know it can really mess up your sugars , but this was a month ago .
They carry it under the Relion name, but it is the same as Humulin N, which is another nph insulin, similar to novolin. Most dogs do well on either Novolin N or Humulin N. Personally, I found Humulin N to work better for my dog. The cost of a bottle of insulin at WalMart is about $25 compared to $50 for the same thing at a regular retail pharmacy.

hi, I always have problems with my blood sugar level. I m using humulin. even though I eat a normal portion of meal, my blood sugar goes up after each meal. but it goes down to normal level after 4-5 hours. it makes me confused because I cant inject more because I will get low, what should I do?
I use humulin R for fast acting and sometime I drop hour after but other times I just keep raising. I just started using toujeo for my long lasting and still adjusting to it. Before the switch I had severe sensitivity to the fast acting insulin and that is why the ratio is so low. I'm starting to think its to low with only taking one long lasting instead of two. Timing used to be after I ate because of the reaction i woukd have and now when I eat.
When I fast my sugars stay stable.
I am not a doctor, but my understanding of Type I is that insulin is the only medication that will work since our bodies are not producing any insulin. I think it is unusual for a Type I Diabetic to be taken off insulin and to be able to remain in control with diet and exercise alone. But, then again, diabetes does affect each person differently. I would encourage you to always discuss any changes in your insulin with an endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes.

I have been on Lantus for over two years having switched from Humulin N at bedtime. Not only have I gained 30 pounds, I started having mood swings and irritability since starting Lantus and lately now in the past month I had two severe lows right after taking the Lantus (within 30 minutes of taking my shot).
