how neupogen works

3 so I did the neupogen on Wednesday morning and did my interferon on Friday morning as usual. From what I can tell the neupogen works fast and then leaves my system just as fast. I let the neupogen sit out for about 15 to 20 minutes and don’t shake it b/c it’s syrupy compared to the interferon and the bubbles that come from shaking won’t leave so you’ll have to throw away that vial.

How much neupogen are you guys taking per shot.

Neupogen works within hours. I take one shot a week, prolly should take two. It does what it's supposed too while physical effects have been zero. Someone correct this if wrong. Neup is used to increase WBC/ANC count. WBC is essentially the immune system. A low WBC count won't cause fatigue. Low RBC and Hemoglobin will since it transports oxygen.

Does a drug such as Neupogen (G-CSF) increases the possibility of rejection due to increased WBC? Or is rejection caused by another part of the immune system rather than WBC and ANC?

That said, many of us here have either been offered the helper drug Neupogen at similar ANC levels (it works very fast), or allowed to continue on full peg even without Neupogen. My medical team, for example, rarely reduces/stops the Peg (or even uses Neupogen for that matter) for low ANC.

I just read that a lot of people try NOT to take Neupogen unless it is a necessity due to sx. I am on Neupogen and I take it 3 times a week and have been taking it for 8 mos. now. Does anyone know exactly why people/anyone would want to NOT take Neupogen? Your answers may provide some insight for me and my sx's.

For those of you that have taken neupogen, how low was your WBC's & ANC's when you started taking it?

5 Secondly, my first neupogen shot left me in so much pain, I emailed my doctor the next week, in tears telling him how much I dreaded doing the next shot. He suggested doing half a dose. Problem solved and ironically, my anc were better with the lower dosage than the higher one. It's nasty stuff. Be sure you're taking calcium and vitamin D for your bones.

Having said that, there is much debate in the medical community whether or not HCV treating patients are at any further risk of developing infection even with a low ANC Neupogen is another very strong medication and always best to have a frank discussion with your doctor on wether o not he/she feels it is even necessary even if your level ever is too low Best of luck with your tx. Even then, the more aware docs will prescribe Neupogen rather than to reduce dose of interferon. Generally, interferon works on the the White Cells and neutrophils where riba abuses the Red Cells and hemoglobin.

my doc put me on Neupogen right away when my ANC dropped to .75. and Neupogen is just an extra weekly shot to keep my WBC and ANC up! it's a rescue drug for me! good job on UND!!!

I will never again eat anything unhealthy and im confident that if i keep this up, i wont need to be injected with either neupogen or neulasta. Hopefully it works!. Thanks everyone for reading. Best wishes to all!

3 and Nuet 12. The doctors office called me this morning and gave me neupogen injections. I did the 2 weeks test without the pcr and the WBC was 2 and Neut was 22. The NP gave me 4 neupogen injections of which I used 2 in 2 weeks but instead of the WBC going up it tanked. Now my NP wants me to inject 4 injections in a week. Is it normal to do 4 injections in a week? My PCR result will come out next week and I will post it here. I am doing SOC for genotype 4 and will add vic next week.

in the hospital i had 3 different hematologist look at me, and they feel that i would have restart tx with neupogen shot 3 times a week that is if i will be able to restart, pending on my 12 week test (if lower my vl enought its a go if not??) Im not to sure how it works but here they but your neutrophil level on a scale mine was 75ish (good) before tx to .

Once the count starts to climb and reaches a certain level, the neulasta/neupogen no longer works. When the level comes down a new injection of neupogen starts the progress again. If you're on neulasta it stays in your body about 3 weeks so if the count drops after a week or so, it will start working again.

I have been taking neupogen for about 2 months now. I take 480mcg every 2 wks. How often and how much do you take? Maybe you won't need it for the full 40wks. My neutrophils went down to .5 so I started the neupogen....my stats seem to go up and down so I only have to take it now every 2 wks. It is unknown whether filgrastim (Neupogen) increases or decreasses an individual's risk of developing cancer.

how many shots of the neuprogen do you give yourself before the side effects stop and i mean the pain gopes away i have only had 1 till monday that will be my 2nd

I think actually that it was $300 per injection not $550 but I am not sure and I can't find the receipt right now. Call your pharmacy and they will tell you the retail cost. The only issue is that you may have to find a pharmacy that has some in stock. I think they have to order 10 vials at a time, and they don't want to order them without knowing you will take most of them. My prescription is for 7 vials each time it renews.

I imagine if I could get an overnight shipment of neupogen from my insurance co.who no longer pays for my meds....(Aetna Pharmacy). BCBS will most likely do the same. Wish you the best.

ve been taken off twice for low WBC/ANC and once solely for low platelets. Finally they started giving me Neupogen. It works! It would be awful indeed if a side of Neup is lowering PL's.

Does your trial give your doctor leeway to determine what comes first, the neupogen or the dosage reduction? If yes, you can ask your doctor to go with the neupogen first, stating you don't want a dosage reduction. Adherence to dosages in the first 12 weeks are particularly important. If the trial does not allow your doctor that leeway and it strictly requires dosage reduction at 750 ANC and neupogen at 500 ANC, you'll have to follow trial mandates.

You might find minor fluctuations in blood counts throughout the week - some people who wanted to raise their white counts slightly were advised to run up and down stairs before a test, apparently this works! - but a steady decline over months seems to indicate an overall ongoing hit to your white counts from the interferon. Not uncommon. I recall that your doctor has talked about reducing your dosage as a response.

The one thing I learned from both his old posts as well as OHs is how tricky the timing can be with Neupogen. I knew out the outset to be vigilant about the timing of my labs and the Neupogen dose. Even though this was only weeks ago I see I saved myself some time and discomfort since I knew what to ask and what to look for when I started this med.
