You might find minor fluctuations in blood counts throughout the week - some people who wanted to raise their white counts slightly were advised to run up and down stairs before a test, apparently this works! - but a steady decline over months seems to indicate an overall ongoing hit to your white counts from the interferon. Not uncommon. I recall that your doctor has talked about reducing your dosage as a response.

Neup works for the most part all of the time,however is it your ANC (absolute neutrophils) that usually would dictate whether neup is need or not. best ..

t (me not listen - what a revelation) because I knew I was getting the Neup tomorrow. About how long does it take to raise the whites? I will go for another CBC on Thursday so if I inject tomorrow will it work that fast? ANC has been averaging around mid 4 to 6. You would think the docs office would have gone over this with me but they didn't. If anyone would can give me a heads up I would certainly appreciate it.

I never heard that they would conteract one another and do not see how they could since rescue meds like Neupogen and Epoegen are intended to stimulate blood cell production which are produced differntly within our bodies and Interferon is also naturaly produced in our bodies.

Hi folks! OK, I have a question. I am probably going to be starting on Procrit soon. My Hg. actually came up a little bit this week. I'm back up to 9.8. I was on vacation so I felt pretty good all week. Today I repeated an Iron profile and a Ferritin level. The Iron profile was normal. My Iron was elevated before I started treatment back in Feb. My Ferritin level is now up to 430, normal being 23-307. That was normal before I started treatment.

d take interferon over neupogen any day. Great news that you are almost there. Keep up the great work. Susie- anc of 200 seems more aggressive then I think even the more progressive hepatologists will risk. My understanding is that although some hepatologists will let you go to 300 without using neupogen this is pretty unusual and very very aggressive, . Perhaps you are correct that it would be okay, but I would be fearful of it going even lower.

How low does the red & white cells need to be before they give you procrit? I just got my test and red is 9.1 and white is 2.9. it keeps dropping and I'm exhausted, I get another one in 2 weeks.

3 and Nuet 12. The doctors office called me this morning and gave me neupogen injections. I did the 2 weeks test without the pcr and the WBC was 2 and Neut was 22. The NP gave me 4 neupogen injections of which I used 2 in 2 weeks but instead of the WBC going up it tanked. Now my NP wants me to inject 4 injections in a week. Is it normal to do 4 injections in a week? My PCR result will come out next week and I will post it here. I am doing SOC for genotype 4 and will add vic next week.

For me, Neupogen was significantly milder. As Linda pointed out, Neulasta is longer lasting, Neupogen requires more shots. Neulasta is much more expensive, if that's a consideration. Even with the more frequent Neupogen, I found that that Neupogen at $400 each is a better bargain than Neulasta at $3000 each. (these amounts are based on what hematologist billed insurance, not my out of pocket). Your mileage may vary.

Does a drug such as Neupogen (G-CSF) increases the possibility of rejection due to increased WBC? Or is rejection caused by another part of the immune system rather than WBC and ANC?

It was a terrifying experience. And it got worse when the neupogen decided not to work for quite a long time. Fortunately that doesn't happen very often but it is a real possibility. I was not his first case.

How does anyone afford rescue meds AND Hep C meds? We have pretty good insurance from my husband's employer but I am already paying over $700 a month for meds. We don't use credit cards. I have been unable to work since 2006. I worked as a nurse from 1987_1997, got fibrous and chronic fatigue but I didn't file for any disability. When I decided to file in 2007, I was Las king 2 quarters to qualify. My husband has a decent retirement so I don't qualify for other assist.

Hope someone more knowledgeable weighs in but please let me know how your doc interprets this. How soon will you be seeing him and can you call him to make sure he's on top of this?

You probably did not need 4 shots, but now they know how you respond to neupogen and they can tailor it a little better for you. Believe the labwork.

I would tend to wait to see if your numbers drop on treatment instead of taking Neup ahead of time. My WBCs have been below normal for many years (a consequence of Hep C I guess) and I'm in week 25 of TX and my WBCs haven't dropped "too" low yet. I can't tell you my specific ANC pre-treatment number but all of my WBC numbers were low prior to starting TX.

Have been trying to cost what a ceiling amount might be for a 12 week period to see if I can organise sufficient funds. Neupogen in prepared syringes are sold in packs of 10 - $1504 for 3000mcg/.5ml shots and $2407 for 480mcg/.5ml shots. I realise that amount required is case dependant but wouldnt mind any info which might assist me to at least get some idea of the range which may generally apply.

5 Secondly, my first neupogen shot left me in so much pain, I emailed my doctor the next week, in tears telling him how much I dreaded doing the next shot. He suggested doing half a dose. Problem solved and ironically, my anc were better with the lower dosage than the higher one. It's nasty stuff. Be sure you're taking calcium and vitamin D for your bones.

The value of absolute neutrofils are often used to gauge when to intervene; do you have these results also listed in the CBC?

Having said that, there is much debate in the medical community whether or not HCV treating patients are at any further risk of developing infection even with a low ANC Neupogen is another very strong medication and always best to have a frank discussion with your doctor on wether o not he/she feels it is even necessary even if your level ever is too low Best of luck with your tx.
