Glucosamine and aspirin for dogs

Common Questions and Answers about Glucosamine and aspirin for dogs

glucosamine

Avatar f tn Enteric Coated aspirin is NOT good for dogs. It is not digested and can build up in their system causing toxicity.
436837 tn?1293793226 Please do try a Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement daily. It might have very very good results. I know for a fact it has with my dog. She had a broken leg years ago (in her past life before I rescued her) Since then she has limped, and 'hitched' that leg from time to time, especially when the weather turned damp and cold. I started her with the supplement a few months ago in the Spring. I have not looked back! For testimony, she is leaping over hurdles 3-4 feet tall!
Avatar n tn Some dogs tolerate the chondroitin fine, but to be safe, I would first try straight glucosamine, maybe about 500 mg a day. Give it every day for a few weeks, and see if that helps. In the meantime, you can try an enteric coated low-dose aspirin tablet (80 mg like they sell for heart patients, but be sure you get the enteric coated), once a day with food. If the glucosamine works, then you can discontinue the aspirin after possibly as short a time as a few days.
Avatar n tn I have heard many different things about glucosamine for dogs . That is is okay for your dogs, and also that it isn't. There can be many benefits to providing supplements for your dog. It can help them remain healthy and with that even happier. No one likes to deal with a grumpy dog. Can you tell me where I could find more information about glucosamine for dogs though?
Avatar m tn Our mix lab is nearly 15 yrs old and limps on her front left paw and her hips give away when she runs. She still eats really well along with drinking water and plays for a short time every few hours with us. She can go outside and do her business but she coughs alot and sometimes brings up alot of yellow bile. Is doesn't squeal in pain and we give her one Iburprophen at bedtime. Are we prolonging her life and causing more problems for her?
Avatar n tn It's OK to give "human" grade Glucosamine and Chondroitin to dogs. But you seriously need to watch out for any additives in the capsules or tablets. Artificial sweeteners, Xylitol, sugars, or any other additives, and I would say no -don't give them that stuff. Toxic for them. However, the basic Glucosamine/Chondroitin is EXACTLY the same substance whether for humans or dogs. The difference is -the price. My vet told me that.
Avatar f tn My dog was diagnosed with hip dysplasia this last summer and the doctor recomended Glucosamine for my dog Bowzer and it seems to be helping he is walking better and even running around. I also buy the Pedigree dog food which has one where it has glucosamine in it for healthy joints. Ofcourse ask your vet if Glucosamine would be ok for your dog to take because I don't know if hip arthritis and hip dysplasia is the same thing. I hope and pray your baby gets better.
Avatar m tn 5 pound schnauzer and has been limping a bit after exercise. I have started giving her 500 mg of glucosamine a day and wanted to know if this is the right dosage?
Avatar m tn I hsve tried benadryl twice daily , he is on asprin for his size, and glucosamine for pets. If not what could i do for him. I really would appreciate any advice, and thank you so much for your time.
931246 tn?1297902651 DO NOT, repeat DO NOT ever give him ibuprofen, though. Ibuprofen and tylenol are quite toxic to dogs and cats and can kill them quickly. Regular aspirin, however, CAN be given to a dog, so you could even ask the vet if you could give him some of that. There is a human product called Ascriptin that is aspirin with a coating of Maalox, which is very easy on the stomach that might help him. Your vet can advise you of the correct dosage for his weight and condition.
6669309 tn?1462648142 Hi. Arthritis is very common in older dogs and the longer dogs live the more common it is becoming. Nutritional supplements Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate are two substances that have fast become the standard treatment in canine age-related arthritis. These are often sold as a single combined substance in good pet shops and quality supermarkets. Alternatively, just look up "Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate for dogs" on Google and you should find a supplier.
Avatar f tn I read somewhere that blackstrap molasses works wonders for arthritis pain in dogs. I also heard of extra virgin coconut oil and apple cider vinegar. I am really tempted to mix all these and give it a try. Has anyone tried these? or are there any other natural remedies? My dog has been on metacam but it doesn't work very well, I can tell she is still in pain. My dad keeps telling us to just put her to sleep so she can rest and not be in pain anymore.
675347 tn?1365460645 Please does anyone know the dosage of Glucosamine Sulphate for dogs? How many milligrams per pound body weight? Also, is it ok to give my dog the regular Glucosamine (which people take) as it is so much cheaper to buy that at the supermarket, than to get it from the vet, or to buy dog treats which contain it! Thanks for any help or suggestions, anyone. Ginger.
Avatar f tn Hi-The fatty tumors are benign overgrowths of fat cells. They are nothing to worry about at all and do not adversely affect your dogs health. The Rimadyl however KILLS dogs and this is something you need to understand. In fact since the Rimadyl Class Action Law Suit, veterinarians are suppose to explain this and have pet owners sign a release form before prescribing this medication. Rimadyl is also available under many other names carprofen, vetprofen etc.
Avatar f tn Certainly lameness and leg pain in older dogs is most often caused by degenerative joint disease and arthritis occurs however there are many other possibilities. A confirmed diagnosis always improves treatment outcome. You mentioned when your dog gets up afetr lying down his starts to limp? As a general rule (dont bet on it but the odds are in your favour) when I see lameness after rest I think of soft tissue injuries.
Avatar m tn So far in my experience, Deramax has been the best non-steroidal anti-inflammatory for pain in dogs - particularly for arthritis pain. Rimadyl is a close second and fairly cheap since it's been on the market for years. What kind of pain is your dog experiencing?
Avatar m tn A Vet prescribed Deramaxx for my friend's dog, and ithe dog began having seizures within 24 hours- (never had seizures before). And then it was one problem after another. May have been coincidental, but my friend didn't think so. Maybe Metacam would be a safer alternative (?) There are over the counter (herbal/supplement) type painkillers available at pet stores or on-line, though I don't know if they'd work for the particular ailment your dog has.
Avatar n tn It's probably just age creeping up on him. What type of glucosamine product are you using on him? How long has he been on it? Those products don't work right away. Oftentimes you don't see any results at all for at least 30 days, and you don't get to peak performance until the pet has been taking it for six months or more. So unless he has been on the glucosamine for half a year or more, I wouldn't give up yet and say that it hasn't done much.
