Fosamax with vitamin d

Common Questions and Answers about Fosamax with vitamin d

fosamax

Avatar f tn Common practice among physicians is apparently 800-1000 ius of Vitamin D a day for good health. The single Fosamax pill has 5600 ius of D. Will this one pill suffice for my D intake all week and is it all right to have it all at once instead of single pills every day?
7469840 tn?1409845836 He started me on a regimen of weekly Estrogen patch, weekly Fosamax, and Citracal Plus D. It took a few years, but I am now back up to normal bone density. I would not trust just any old Family Practive doctor or PCP. You want someone who specializes in Osteoporosis and who will tailor the treatment to you. Best of luck.
Avatar f tn After gastric bypass, malabsorption is common and the PTH level will increase to help regulate calcium. Taking vitamin D and calcium can help with this. Depending on the serum calcium level, there is an outside chance this is a parathyroid benign tumor (ie if Ca is >10 it is more likely) but usually in these cases the Ca is in the 8.5-9.5 range) and taking extra oral calcium and vitamin D is the best bet.
Avatar f tn I took Fosamax, calcium, magnesium and vitamin D - along with multivitamins - throughout treatment without any adverse effects.
Avatar f tn I do want to caution your use of the Fosamax though. New studies have shown issues with femur bone fractures (brittle bone) and esophagal problems. There are other ways to strengthen bones naturally without taking biphosphonates. I'd get your vitamin D & calcium levels checked too since an underactive thryoid can cause problems with metabolism/regeneration of bone (so can too much thryoid hormone!) That is what makes Hashis difficult to deal with due to the hyper/hypo rollercoaster.
Avatar n tn HI I believe that fosamax is a PPI which after long term use can affect vitamin and mineral absorbtion from natural means as well as suppliments. Most PPI's help heal the lining of ur esophagus ....ur Dr or pharmacist should be able to help u with this question. In addition to taking meds, u do need to adjust ur lifestyle and diet.....please see the Health Pages here on MedHelp. U will find a list of foods to avoid and foods that r safe, plus lifestyle tips.
Avatar f tn The doctor is currently looking into possible causes, she wants to talk with my gastroenterologist and so on. I will certainly ask about Fosamax next time I see her. I didn't (and can't) say that TX was entirely responsible. I think it was likely to have been a significant contributing factor. I had no idea about the bone density loss issue until now. I would have liked to have had it monitored/managed in association with treatment while I was undergoing it not find out afterwards.
Avatar f tn I would be aiming for at least 50ng/mL. One study found 93% with unexplained bone and muscle pain with vitamin D deficiency so bone pain is a very common symptom of vitamin D deficiency. "Mary Shomon: Why do you feel vitamin D is so important to thyroid sufferers? Richard Shames, MD: This particular vitamin is so crucial to thyroid function that its status has now been elevated by researchers to co-hormone.
691935 tn?1421027090 s apparent that my bone loss was caused initially by liver damage keeping me from converting vitamin D, further compounded by malabsorption of D from diarrhea caused by another drug (not the hcv/riba combo). Took many months for the D situation to straighten out but it looks like a year of rebuilding bone with Fosamax should set things right.
Avatar f tn Have any of you heard a creaking noise in your body, felt movement or had movement/and/or strange feelings in your heart before going on the vitamin d therapy? I was diagnosed with low vitamin d (it was 18) and was told to take the 50000 iu 1per wk for 6 wks but being that i am scared of meds I opted for the 1000 iu per day dosage without a prescription. I think now I should have listened to the doc and took the larger dosage.
Avatar f tn ZonnyC, I do free weights 3 times a week. 85 lb deadlifts, bench press, rows, lat pull downs, squats, etc for 1 hour. Then walk on the tread mill for 20 minutes. Now I am adding 1 hour walks on my off days. I am trying to build up stamina. I also cook at night and clean the house. But I sit to do computer and am thinking of standing for that too. As for being vegan, it is a healthier diet. my husband's and my cholesterol were 200 and now 130 and his blood pressure was 140/90 and now 120/70.
Avatar f tn Is there any calcium that works better than others? I have been on calcium and vitamin D supplements for years but went from osteopenia level to full-blown severe osteoporosis in a few years I would appreciate any advice since the medical field tells you nothing but to take medication and deal with the outcome!!
Avatar n tn t prescribing any medication for me but tells me to continue taking calcium supplement and Vitamin D and come back in a year to do another test. Since I am obviously having osteoporosis, shouldn't I be taking any prescription drug? I am worried sick over the reading and need some expert opinion to go back and talk to my doctor again. Thank you in advance for any comment.
Avatar m tn Just read about Osteo K with 45 MG of Vitamin K. Is this a good and safe alternative for Fosamax?
Avatar f tn Vitamin D deficiency is a pretty common issue among those with Hep C. There are several threads on this site regarding it. I don't know that there are any "long term effects" from it, as long as you get the levels up to where they should be. What I am curious about is that your biopsy results those grades/stages are pretty far along - their certainly not minimal - did your doctor not suggest treating this disease?
1669790 tn?1333662595 There have been some recent discussions on the supplementation of vitamin D improving the probability of achieving a SVR with vitamin D deficient HCV patients. Instead of just taking D supplements, I wanted to check my levels, since I do get some sun and didn't want to take something I may not need. Following are my results from Quest's "Vitamin D, 25 Hydroxy and 1,25 Dihydroxy, LC/MS/MS test.
Avatar f tn I have IBS> I started to take fosamax once a week (for osteo). did so for 4 weeks. it seemed to bother my esophagus (bumping, reflux) so my doctor suggested actonel. i took one pill a week ago and since have had increasing sensation of a lump in my throat, and like I'm full of phlegm that I can't ever swallow down. I can eat so of course I am swallowing. I'm off all drug right now but throat/phlegm sensations feel settled in, especailly bad at night, and are anxiety provoking.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, many docs are not interested in Vit D and are not aware. I am also on a drug that interferes with D. Over the past 12 years I have seen many docs attempting to find out why I was feeling so horrible without an answer. None did a D test. Went to an Endocrinologist who should have caught it. Went to a Neurologist who should have told me about the drug interaction, as he prescribed it. PCP had no idea. The Neuro just shrugged his shoulders and told me he had no clue.
Avatar m tn I am questioning whether he should be taking the Fosamax now due to the fracture that he suffered. Will Fosamax interfere with normal bone healing?

Avatar m tn Fosamax has also been prescribed to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Brand name Fosamax is manufactured in the United States by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc. In about 2008-2009, Fosamax became widely available in its generic form (alendronate sodium). Side effects of Fosamax may include the following: 1. Esophagus problems including irritation, inflammation, or ulcers 2.
Avatar n tn t deal specifically with osteoporosis but as far as I know, there is no jaw bone loss associated with fosamax usage. There is some concern about possible delayed healing or risk of infection after removing teeth with patients using fosamax though.
Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
Avatar f tn I believe there is a link between prolonged use of fosamax and oseonecrosis of the mandible. Who might I contact for positive confirmation?
Avatar n tn yes it is called dead jaw in many of the class action lawsuits. it usually occurs in people with cancer or with serious dental problems. the jawbone actually rots away and can become quite painful and disfiguring. your friends dental problems combined with the drug caused this problem. the good news is she found out before the situation became too extreme.
