Saw my primary MD today. He said that the Flomax relaxes muscles in the bladder and prostate, and the Avodart shrinks the prostate. He said that after a year or so, if the prostate has gone down and reduced the problems, they like to eliminate the Flomax, as it is no longer necessary. Long story short, I now have a prescription for Avodart alone. I realize that it may not reduce the surgery risk, but one less drug is a good thing.
, where normal for him means slow urination due to long standing BHP, but not as slow, painful, and dribbling as with Flomax. We are just guessing that the way Flomax works by relaxing muscles is causing these effects. (Could the enlarged prostate end up pressing even more on muscles?? I realize these are just guesses: I have looked at a lot of medical sites, but this does not look like to be listed as a side effect!

I noticed a slight improvement with the Detrol, but when I added the Flomax things urinary got dramatically better. But, shortly after starting the Flomax, I discovered that I did not produce any ejaculate! Not that sex is a big thing with me (staying upright while standing takes precidence), but it is still an important part of life (if only rarely).
I had my cataracts removed by an ophthalmologist who did not know that the drug Flomax created problems with the dilating of the pupil. The result was that he experienced difficulties. It is now 30 months later and he says I need to have YAG surgery done as my eyes have developed secondary cataracts. I can hardly see out of the one eye.
I want to have it done but because of the previous procedure and his not being aware of the effect of Flomax I have lost confidence in the Dr.
yes the Flomax is the cause of your retro. I've read people have permanent strength loss on Flomax too.
some people are anti Avodart since it affects the prostate hormonally and may have longterm effects. I think I may stop the Flomax after a few days on 0.8mg/day
I had a burning urination like I was releasing prostate fluid so maybe that is good? I really want to get prostate drainage, it seems that some urologists may do prostate massage.
I think flomax is bad it causes tiredness. maybe it causes permanent exhaustion and muscle weakness?
Stopping the Flomax at this stage really doesn't help. The effects on the iris are basically permanant by now. I would concentrate on finding the best cataract surgeon on your plan and make sure he or she has done dozens and dozens of Flomax cases and is very comortable with the management. Dr. David Chang in Los Altos, CA has written extensively on the best techniques to manage such cases.
Flomax increases the risk of 'floppy iris syndrome". Eye surgeons don't stop the flomax as has a lasting effect. Also if the person tells the surgeon then special drops are used to prevent floppy iris syndrome.
My question is really about my father; he is 78 years old in general good health. He takes 5 mg blood pressure med and he takes Flomax daily. When he first started taking Flomax; which he needs to be able to urinate or as he says to keep his plumbing working, anyway, he would have dizzy spells. His doctor said this was normal, a side effect of Flomax. But now lately he has been passing out; I think that is unusual for any medication and I'm worried there may be something else going on.
When you have BPH, the flow from the bladder and prostate are greatly restricted and usually force the ejaculate into the bladder. Flomax helps reduce the size of the prostate and permits freer flowing urine. If you discontinue use of Flomax, your voiding would be more difficult and leave residuals in your bladder setting you up for some ugly uti's in the future and you would still have a retrograde ejaculation.

There is another class of medications, such as Uroxatral, which can help shrink your prostate and improve your symptoms. the results of this class of medications, however, often take many weeks before they make a major differences. Ultimately, flomax and drugs like uroxatral can be combined to give maximal medical therapy for BPH.
I have been using finesteride instead of flomax for the last 4 month.
I can't use Flomax or other alpha blockers due to side effects -- disturbed sleep. Uroxatral even caused me to sleepwalk 15 feet from a nap on the sofa one evening, waking when I fell flat on my face in the next room! Separately, due to a Vitamin D deficiency my doc found, he put me on 50,000 units Vitamin D per week for 8 weeks, followed by biweekly doses. And guess what...the Vitamin D almost instantly "cured" the BPH.
Flomax often but not always causes the pupil not to dilate well in response to dilating drops. In removing the cataract which is behind the pupil the doctor cannot visualize the peripheral portion of the lens which means that he or she is "flying blind" trying to pulverize the lens and evacuate the pieces. An experienced surgeon can work around the problem and sometimes has to use mechanical pupil expanders of some kind which add to the difficulty and duration of the surgery.
I need cataract sugery, but the opthamologist who examined me was very discouraging because I took Flomax briefly almost five years ago. The reason he was reluctant is that I have not usable vision in my right eye due to undiagnosed problems in childhood. Today the eye would have been patched in childhood, etc. and/or had surgery to make it useful.
And it usually takes 3 days before the resolution of symptoms. However, if the second drug does not eliminate all your symptoms, inform your doctor for proper management. It may take a longer time before the effects could be seen depending on the dose. Or you may be shifted to a stronger drug with milder side effects.
