Avatar m tn Dr. W. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "fat and happy." Well, it's not just folklore. The same carbs that make you fat (and contribute to diabetes and other problems) also make you happy. It's simple science: Carbs allow more of the amino acid L-tryptophan to penetrate your brain. The L-tryptophan triggers your brain to make more serotonin, and the serotonin makes you feel happier. It's as simple as that!
Avatar n tn She has only been on insulin and low carb diet for a coupe weeks but her blood glucose levels have been consistently good. I know this may change, and several people (mostly Type 11 patients) have told me giving her Vitamin B12 and chromium would help. My question s are has anyone here tried those supplements or others? How did your physician feel about it? and are nutraceutical supplements safe for a child as young as mine?
1301482 tn?1325722991 Who has done a low carb diet that worked well? Can you give me any tips for low carb snacks/meals?
Avatar m tn Some one on this website suggested flaxseed or flaxseed oil to help boost the libido. I tried it and you know IT WORKS . You can buy it at Whole foods or a natural food store. I take the flaxseed oil every day. My first thought was " Are you on hormone replacement therapy?" I know getting the right dose of hormone pills can be tricky. When I'm feeling "off" some where in my body I always check out meds first. I really heard that you feel violated.
Avatar f tn My mom had high cholesterol (but never had clogged arteries.) I've had a tendency towards it as well but am thin, work out and have a good diet. Three years ago, my cholesterol came back at 280 (total) with LDL at 156. I told my dr. I'd exercise/diet for 3 months and if that didn't work, I'd go on meds. After daily exercise and strict diet (hardly any saturated fat) my total cholesterol was brought down to 198.

Avatar n tn did you have any other risk factors and you ar kinda young to have heart disease already..
Avatar m tn High triglycerides can suppress HDL, and are associated with high VLDL. Also, high carb and low fat is what causes the preponderance of small dense LDL. The wine might help raise HDL a little bit, but will raise triglycerides even more. I'd ditch it, even though moderate alcohol is generally cardioprotective for most others. I am not a low-carb dieter myself by any means, but it's uncanny how the low-fat / high-carb seems to be going wrong for you.
Avatar f tn Obese adults followed one of the two diets for two years. Those on the low-carb diet had significantly higher cravings for carbohydrates and high-fat foods, although they were less bothered by hunger.
Avatar n tn The doctor acted as if it was no big deal but everything I read says low hdl is the worst to have even if your cholesterol is normal.. I am afraid to walk or do anything now as I think i am going to drop..
Avatar n tn The [new] results showed that the men who took just flaxseed as well as those who took flaxseed combined with a low-fat diet did the best, indicating that it is the flaxseed which is making the difference," she said. "These results demonstrate that flaxseed may well protect against prostate cancer growth," she added. "But this is just the first study. We will need to replicate these results before we can make recommendations.
Avatar n tn I discovered in the summer that I have an unusually low IGA, meaning my salivary gland production is very low. Could a low IGA cause Sjogren's Syndrome? Am I just being paranoid or does this seem likely?
Avatar m tn low carb or low fat for fat loss? i have heard so many conflicting opinions...
Avatar m tn Barb, I was on low-carb diet for a long time, but recently I found out that for many people like me, eating a low-carb diet may weaken the thyroid or even cause hypothyroid. If you google "low carb diet and low thyroid", you will see that eating "safe" carbs like sweet potatoes or rice will help out your thyroid a lot. http://chriskresser.
Avatar f tn I've been doing low carb for 3 weeks and I am down 14lbs. I fell off the wagon last week, had an awful stomach bug and just couldn't bear what I would normally have, as soon as I felt well enough I jumped right back on it. Just looking for some motivation, inspiration or even just a natter.
1451080 tn?1438527660 As a family of 5 with two children and myself being on meds and only one person working, I need some economical low carb ideas for meals and/or snacks. The low carb thing is new to my entire family. Any info would be helpful. Also, any info on how to naturally lower my blood pressure is also welcome. Thanks!
Avatar m tn You really only need to drop your LDL by 20 points, which is not very much. Do a low fat diet, not empty carbs like breads, sugars and pastas. Add fruits and veggies as well. The easiest way is to cut out fast foods so if you indulge in burgers and fries, stop and that alone will bring your number down. Is there a reason why you don't want to take a statin?
Avatar m tn Loaded with alpha-linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid that helps reduce inflammation, flaxseed has been used for centuries for medicinal and health reasons. Gandhi proclaimed, "Wherever flaxseed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health." The seed itself has terrific nutritional value, very usable protein, tremendous fatty acids, and minerals like magnesium, potassium, and zinc. Additionally, they're a great source of fiber.
231441 tn?1333892766 Has anyone tried very low carb diet for managing diabetes, and preventing or minimising the use of insulin? It appears that all of a sudden my blood sugar is now 'diabetic' and I can't seem to tolerate regular diet any more if I want normal blood sugars.
Avatar f tn I read that suddenly coming off very low carb can cause temporary insulin resistance. Could this cause my spike? And should I be worried that it's not coming down so far? I'm a little worried right now. 194 can't be good...
988694 tn?1332359479 Hi, low carb diet works wonders for diabetics. I went on a low carb diet, lost approx 100 lbs ! which put my diabetic levels back into normal range. As for thyroid function, I never noticed any changes in my hormone labs, due to low carb diet.
Avatar n tn During the first days of my low-carb diet, I felt bloated too. Take this as a transition period, also since low carb means ingesting more vegetables, some vegs like spinach does cause bloating for me. Increasing fat and meat servings help me a lot. Bloating could also mean you lack some enzymes for particular types of food. Experiments with various food to see which ones most suitable for your digestion.
Avatar f tn I use it on everything! I put flaxseed in my smoothies everyday and sometimes chia seed. I eat raw almonds for a crunchy snack. I drink Bod.e Burn before I exercise though I usually just take a long walk. Just get up and move! Remember to eat every 3 hours...a lean protein, a complex carb, and a healthy fat! Drink lots of water...I can't stress that enough!!! Well, that's just a few things I have accumulated in my daily lifestyle. I know you can do it! Just take it one day at a time!
Avatar f tn Also, does anyone know if taking flaxseed oil makes your oestrogen dominant? I take flaxseed oil for omega 3, 6 as I'm scared of fish oil and mercury... but I just read that flaxseed oil has plant oestrogen and has oestrogen-like action, so there is a possible link to estrogen dominance. Guess only one way to find out..will have to stop taking it and retest.
7712902 tn?1393734882 I done A Low Carb Diet FOr Couple Of Years ITried The Curves Complete And Gained 20 Lbs IWent Back To The Low Carb Diet And Can't Lose What I Gained Help What's Going On
Avatar f tn This can be done by carefully adjusting your insulin doses and combine with eating a low carb diet (the low carb will reduce your insulin requirements and thus also protect you from going too low or high). I recommend the book diabetes solutions by Dr. Richard Bernstein. HE describes how to get excellent control using insulin and lwo carb diet. Even if you don't end up going as low carb as he recommends, you can still use what he teachers and a lower carb approach to get good control.
