Avatar f tn Hi, Some cases of early-onset AD, called familial AD (FAD), are inherited. FAD is caused by a number of different gene mutations on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1, and each of these mutations causes abnormal proteins to be formed. Even if only one of these mutated genes is inherited from a parent, the person will almost always develop early-onset AD. This inheritance pattern is referred to as “autosomal dominant” inheritance.
2007231 tn?1327807016 As I do have faith that one day my fathers Alzheimer's Disease will be treated one day. "Let go and let god" they say. We finally found something that treats alzheimer's and we have noticed much improvement. I was reading through research documents from www.smartdrugsforthought.com and found several profound medical documents and studies with the use of a cognitive and memory supplement, called Piracetam, in Alzheimer's patients.
Avatar m tn I have been having electrical shocks in my left calf now for about a year and a half. After this diagnosis I was told to continue with my Gabapentin {3x a day @300mg} but I was also told that a possible Botox shot in the surface area of my left calf might also end this pain. Can anyone tell me what possible effects the Botox shot might have on me such as adverse reactions etc.
Avatar f tn Hi, this may seem like an odd question but I'm really having difficulty getting a straight answer from the neurologists I have asked. I realize that the field is still growing and am comfortable getting the "I just don't know" answer. Is it POSSIBILE that a head trauma or any other not yet named brain disorder could cause a result on a PET scan similar to alzheimer's.
Avatar f tn Patients who got the treatment for four months showed improvements in tests of memory recall that lasted for two months. "We believe our results are very promising and they warrant future trials," said Dr. Suzanne Craft of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System and the University of Washington in Seattle, who presented her findings at a meeting of the Alzheimer's Association in Honolulu.
398059 tn?1447945633 Not sure if these have already been posted or discussed, but: From Julie Stachowiak, Ph.D. , your Guide to Multiple Sclerosis It is common for people to refer to "a senior moment" or say something like "must be my Alzheimer's disease" when they forget a name or an appointment. I never really thought that was particularly sensitive or funny, since Alzheimer's is real and debilitating.
Avatar m tn I have known many people with this illness. For some it is best to be in a care place where they will not get hurt, for others the siblings decided to care for the parents at home. I hated watching a woman friend to my Mom who was placed in a home and just was in bed till she died, maybe that was best- but it was hard to watch. I don't know if there is any connection, but I read once about Gluten and Memory loss. You might read up on that and just see... I really don't know.
Avatar f tn I have taken care of my husband's grandmother for over two years who had Alzheimer's and my mother has it. From what I have researched, it is the body shutting down that takes the patient. They start to not want to eat so nutrition plays a big part in it in the latter stages. If they get something like pneumonia, it's harder and harder for them to recover. Grandma was diagnosed with it in her early 80's and she died from pneumonia at the age of 92. I hope this helps.
757137 tn?1347196453 Low vitamin D linked to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease like most people, you're deficient in the sunshine vitamin, you're also at risk for life-robbing diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. One new study out of England's University of Exeter found that seniors with the lowest levels of D had a dramatically higher risk of dementia warning signs.
1359125 tn?1277431541 The only way to know for sure is to be tested for it, and it is a super simple blood test that only takes a few days for results. There is a lot of controversy in even testing for it, however.
Avatar f tn Hi, my 18 year old son has just found out his girlfriend is pregnant, he had been on methotrexate for the last 13 years and we have always been warned about the dangers of fathering a child, I have read on this site a lot of people saying the child has been ok but they seem only to have been taking this med for a few months, does anyone have any advice for someone who has been taking this drug weekly since they were 5 years old and how it will affect an unborn child as he is at odds of whether t
Avatar n tn Hi Margypops, Axona is a brand-new prescription therapy launched in March 2009 for the treatment of mild-moderate Alzheimer's disease. As Alzheimer's is marked by a decrease in glucose in the brain (the primary source of food for the brain), Axona acts by providing/metabolizing glucose in the body to act as an alternate source of food for the brain.
Avatar m tn Not exactly what the article said, so let's tamp down the fear a bit. First of all, it didn't say it increases the onset by 25 years. It says Alzheimer's now appears to start 25 years before any signs are noted. No relation there to covid. What has been widely reported by anyone who has been keeping up with the news, some people suffer long-haul covid, and those are the people these docs are concerned about.
951090 tn?1253316948 There are risk factors for getting Alzheimer's which tend to occur as we get older or hit us at middle age and then get worse if not properly treated---like high blood cholesterol, high blood sugar/diabetes, and high blood pressure.
Avatar f tn 1. There may not be enough glucagon production and too much insulin release, depending the exact composition of the diet. 2. Excess of carbs may eventually lead to high insulin excretion, insulin resistance leading to diabetes potentially, disrupt insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) levels, which removes beta-amyloid in the brain, a key protein in the cause of Alzheimer's. 3.
