Common Questions and Answers about Estrogen for migraines

Avatar f tn My previous doctor tried me in Effexor instead of estrogen for extreme menopausal symptoms and migraines because the clinic now refuses to prescribe estrogen to anyone. I had been on low dose (.25 mg) estrogen every other day over 25 years since I had to have a hysterectomy when I was in my 30s. On Effexor I could not even function. I could only work for a few minutes at a time and then would feel exhausted and unable to concentrate so I had to lie down. I cried all the time.
Avatar n tn So sorry to hear about your migraines getting so frequent. Sometimes estrogen can cause migraines, but not always. I've had 24/7 migraines following a stroke at age 56. I took no estrogen the first year. Then I went on an estrogen patch, then another one with a higher dose, and then another still higher dose and no difference with the migraines which were gradually becoming better from other treatments. So the estrogen may not be the cause.
Avatar n tn Hello, I have had menstrual migraines for over 30 years and as I get closer to menopause, things are getting worse. I had a hysterectomy last July and have been taking.25mg estradiol gel every night and when I first started taking it, it seemed like the headaches were not so bad. Now I am wondering if I should bump it up to .
1132246 tn?1260288259 Hi RickiK I too have the worst 'monthly' migraines associated with that time - a few things that I have found help for me are; Taking Mersyndol for 3 days prior to onset of period, I find the muscle relaxant aids greatly, rubbing lots of Super strength Dencorub on my neck, I apply it very liberally, it burns like hell, but it does help and doubling my dose of Magnesium at this time also. Another good product which I like is the Migrastick.
1389553 tn?1280782127 I am 40 yrs old I had an MRI done past Dec of last year, they say I have Rathe Cleft Cyst in my piturary gland. (5cm) I had several doctors saying they are not causing the migraine. Now, before I had the MRI, I was complaining of having severe migraines for the last 2 yrs. I was taking Imitrex for a while but, I did not like the way I felt-it caused my heart to beat too fast, felt I was surley gonna pass out. I am still taking Topamax to help preventing these headahces.
280418 tn?1306325910 I am very tired of the migraines! Thank you in advance for any insight! PS...
Avatar f tn I take it for panic attacks. I heard low estrogen levels can cause migraines, anxiety and night sweats. Do they do check this in a regular blood test? I'm not sure I have ever had this checked out. I had everything else checked...I am just so fed up with this I don't nkow what to do anymore. What medications has anyone been on to help them with this?
Avatar n tn How old are you? Why did you stop? What type of estrogen were you taking? I sometimes get headaches when my estrogen is wearing off.
Avatar f tn Hormonal fluctuations gave me terrible migraines and weakness and i was getting all sorts of symptoms from low estrogen. I had it pre pregnancy all my life but it's exponentially worse now. With the suggestion of my previous endo i tried birth control pills. 1. Microgynon 20: fixed migraines but have me daily headaches, joint pain, dryness, and terrible mood swings and back pain (I'm still going to physio. Does low oestrogen cause back spams? ? Mine hasn't let go). 2.
Avatar f tn What can I do to help menstrual migraines? Mine have gotten so bad that I have to miss work. Excederin Migraine used to help but it doesn't anymore. They are so painful. I also have gastroparesis and so I don't know what my stomach can tolerate.
Avatar f tn * Orudis * Advil and Motrin (600-800mg) * Nalfon * Naprosyn(available in combo with Imitrex called Treximet) * Relafen * Aleve NSAID treatment should be started two to three days before the menstrual period starts and continued until the period ends. Because the therapy is of short duration, the risk of gastrointestinal side effects is limited.
Avatar n tn Hi there! Yes, Menstrual Migraines are a type of migraine! I get menstrual migraines, but I also get other types of migraines too so I don't take a medication that is specific for menstrual migraines. A medication that you should ask your doctor about is an acute medication that is specifically for menstrual migraines. It is called Frovatriptan. Frovatriptan belongs to a class of medication called triptans, and triptans are used to treat acute migraines.
Avatar f tn But the combo is supposed to be good for migraines, and it works for me when I get estrogen-triggered headaches (which migraines are supposed to be also).
Avatar f tn so is the recommendation for post menopausal women or those still ovulating? I don't take the advil but I have a bakers cyst (water filled!) on my knee now and it's killing me so I'm finding temporary Advil will hurt. I've asked to see an Encochronolist about all these water fllled cysts, I suspect that I'm having hormonal heck right now going on.
Avatar m tn well meds - pursay - is not connected but the hormonal outline of them could bring one on Here is scoop in a nutshell with T4... With the conversion of the T4 medication is could require other hormones to get "active" most commonly estrogen - and the estrogen could be elevated spiking those headaches. I'd have her retested and see if she has optimal labs.
Avatar n tn Hello, I have had an ongoing headache with nausea for about three weeks. Mri and labs checked out ok. Darvocet, tylenol, ibuprofen dont seem to help much. Dr gave me a shot in my neck which helped for two days but also left me with flushing. The same Dr gave me Naproxen and hydracodone but i cannot take the hydracodone as it upsets my stomach and basically does not allow me to function. The front and back of my head hurt as do my neck and jaw.
1806721 tn?1554333407 Midijane, thank you for the reply! It really helped knowing that I'm not the only one struggling with this and feeling like a baby. I'm feeling better today - able to keep down fluid and meds, able to sleep last night after the pain and sensitivities subsided. I am pretty sure that my migraine is hormone-related. I never had any migraine before in my life. This happened after my miscarriage 11 weeks ago.
Avatar f tn While brief courses may be necessary, and the the risks and benefits of this can be discussed further with your doctor, it is important to try to avoid long-term supplemental hormonal therapy such as estrogen, as it can make your migraines worse and increase risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Thank you for this opportunity to answer your questions, I hope you find the information I have provided useful, good luck.
1001420 tn?1281789449 The thing I find best for the prevention of menstrual migraines is Magnesium citrate @ 400mg a day because I find that not only does it help to prevent migraines, but I find that it also helps to prevent my menstrual cramps too. There is a triptan that is specifically for Menstrual Migraines that is called Frovatriptan (brand name is Frova). If anyone who suffers from Menstrual Migraines finds that their current triptan just isn't doing the job...
Avatar f tn Also, unfermented, non-traditional soy foods are the last thing anyone should be consuming. Check out Dr. Mercola's website. The majority of soy on the market is GMO and most soy products out there are unfermented. If you think you're doing yourself a favor by consuming soy sauce even, you're not, because the majority of this even is not made the traditional manner and has wheat gluten added to it. Be sure to check out the website.
Avatar f tn I was on the 1mg patch of Vivelle for years before I switched and tried other estrogen combos.... back to Vivelle for me. I get a dull headache now and then if I forget to change my patch. For me the bad headaches were related to menopause... of course, you will check out this pain with the doctors... but do the research on the hormonal front and see what you think. The reason I like Vliet's book so much, for one thing, is that she gives ideas of doses...
Avatar n tn I had some estrogen deficiency symptoms for quite a few months. If your estrogen deficiency symptoms are really bad, you could consider taking phytoestrogen supplements such as Soy, Black Cohosh, Ginseng, Red Clover or **** Quai.
Avatar f tn I've just had to stop taking the bc pill, because of a blood clot in my right leg. Now I'm having my first period in years without the pill, and boy, it's not pleasant. I've had the mini pseudo-flare before for PMS, but this is awful. I know they've been doing estrogen therapy for MSers, and it's been pretty successful, I would go back on the pill in a second if I wasn't worried about blood clots.
Avatar f tn I agree some people either have a great effect with the BCP and some people the opposite. It works wonders for my migraines but for my sister it makes them worse.
