Avatar f tn We adopted a beautiful American bull dog from a kill shelter. She had heartworm and is now being treated. We got blood tests done and her blood platelets came back a LOW 47k. They want to do an ultrasound first, any way to tell another way why her count is so low? ? She's not lathorgic or weak or feverish, eats and drinks and wants to play but we are keeping her add calm as possible. Any insight would help. She is a year old American bull dog.
Avatar f tn Thank you both for your suggestions. I have already researched and added some supplements to her diet. I will check out the site to see if there are any other suggestions. peekawho. That's very good advice. It had never even occurred to me as to what might be causing it. I just figured it was old age. I know it isn't heartworm, she's been on heartworm meds since she was a puppy and tests negative for that, but I will surely look into what other causes might be. Thank you both.
Avatar f tn Welcome to the Dogs Community! They are probably just roundworms and can easily be gotten rid of with an application of a wormer like Nemex2, followed by a second application in 2 or 3 weeks. Take a stool sample to your vet and he can give you the worming medicine for her. There is really nothing that I could recommend that you can just buy at a store to use, the wormers that they sell at grocery stores and such can be very harsh and still not take care of the problem correctly.
Avatar m tn I assume CHF has been ruled out? Heartworm Disease? Liver Disease (Would have shown on blood test)? Diabetes (Would have shown on BT)? Cushings Disease (A special Test) & how about Tick Borne Disease (Special Test)? I'm so sorry that I can't help you......I agree with Margot, do you have a Veterinary Teaching Hospital near you? Karla P.S. Although far fetched; what are you feeding him?
Avatar f tn He has already had his rabie shot 2 months ago and worming. I also been giving him his heartworm meds once a month. When does he need more shots?
212161 tn?1599427282 Double your dose of the probiotic any time your puppy has to have an antibiotic or anti-parasitic medication. Use Revolution as your flea and tick repellent and heartworm preventative for at least one year. Have your dog only vaccinated with the recommended regimen for the first two years, than request that your vet perform vaccine titers. It has been shown that some vaccines last much longer than only one year.
Avatar f tn he did not run a heartworm test, but Max receives vaccinations every year and i believe he did receive heartworm medication before. I'm going to the vet again in 2 weeks.
694466 tn?1227677802 Hey there! Sorry to hear about your dog's coughing problems... First question: Was your dog vaccinated for kennel cough within the last six months? Next question: When was your dog's last heartworm test? This blood test should be run annually on all dogs. Is your dog on heartworm preventive? When was the last dose that you gave? It is not possible that she contracted heartworms from the kennel.
Avatar f tn Then you have to return for a oral treatment, get tested again, put on 6 months of heartworm pills, and tested again. I am happy to say that my doggy is heartworm free now, and I sure am happy that the treatment didn't have to be repeated. What ever you do, make sure that you always keep him on his heartworm pills after he has been treated.. That's one thing that I am always telling people.
Avatar m tn http://www.ivas.org/, or http://www.tcvm.com/Resources/FindaTCVMPractitioner.aspx Additionally, therapeutic cold laser therapy and/or physical therapy may also be effective. I often use cold laser therapy and acupuncture together on painful patients. You did not mention how old your dog is or what breed/combination of breeds he may be. You are welcome to post this information for additional help.
Avatar m tn Xrays and ekg were done and the vet thinks ity may be congestive heart failure. There is a chance it is heartworm, so they are doing that test as well. If the heartworm was negative, they were going to start her on nitroglycerin and lasix to bring her heart rate down. They suggested I take to to an emergency clinic tonight so she can be seen by a cardiologist tomorrow. If they do administer the nitro and lasix, what more can the E.C. do overnight while waiting for the cardiologist.
Avatar n tn He could just be having a dream. Dogs do dream and sometimes they will yip or even bark in their sleep, or paddle with their legs as if they are chasing something in their dream. You said, however, that you just got this dog. Getting a new pet is kind of on the same plane with getting a new car. You should have him checked out by the vet to make sure he is OK just because he is new to your family and you want to be sure that he is healthy.
603946 tn?1333941839 She advised that the only vaccination our dog should have is rabies. She does feel some type of heartworm is necessary as the development of heartworm would be so bad for her. But rather than giving her the chewable heartworm she put her on Revolution which is topical for fleas, ticks and heartworm. Although I worry about the topicals also, I felt this was the better solution. So far, she's doing fine on it.
Avatar m tn Dogs can have quite a heavy infestation of heartworm and be overweight at the same time, and they can also maintain quite a high level of activity. Heartworm often cannot be detected except by a blood test, but a cough IS one of the symptoms of it. I live in South Texas on the Gulf of Mexico. It's very hot and humid here in the summer, prime mosquito territory.
Avatar n tn Hello, I just acquired a very cool 4 year old dog from a friend of mine who had never taken the dog to a vet for shots or put her on heartworm prevention pills. I took her to the vet and got the shots and had her tested for heartworms and she tested positive. The vet recommended a $385.00, 2 injection treatment with a follow up visit, I believe, in 4 months.
765439 tn?1292960414 My concern here is if he has been tested for Heartworm Disease? Interceptor should not be started without a negative Heartworm test.....Since you have not had him very long, I'm wondering about that......If you haven't already, that's where I would begin..... Welcome to your new family Winston & thank you for adopting......
687729 tn?1397992727 By no means are you throwing your money away on heartworm tests or preventive medicartion. In the early 90's I had three seperate animals diagonised with heartworms with three different outcomes. The first little dog "Benny" became paralyzied, which after numerous x-rays showed no spinal defect.
230262 tn?1316645934 just thought Id post a reminder for you dog owners who live in the colder states...dont forget to start your doggies on the Heartworm prevention again now! I know states down south where its warm enough all year round that you give them their HW meds 12 months a year. Up here we just usually give May thru Nov or so. I just bought mine this morning for the dogs here as its been getting warm spells here and there and TONS Of rain which means mosquitos will be bombarding us by next week Im sure.
Avatar f tn Hiye, this may seem a silly question but is the Elisa test that is used for HIV the same as the Elisa test used for rheumatoid arthritis?.. Is the Elisa just a standard antibody test that is not disease specific and if reactive then a specific test is used?..
