Differin (0.1% adapalene) is likely to be more effective than Pro-active (Benzoyl peroxide) but both are indicated for mild to moderate acne and more stubborn acne will require stronger topical treatment.
Most oral antibiotics cannot be taken until the patient is 12 years old because of the effect they have on growing bones and teeth.

Ok so I have been prescribed differin gel for "acne" problems. I recently had a huge one with deep cyst (when i touch it i can feel hardness under the skin)...then it formed a white head and oozed a lot of pus (and some blood) after which it stopped being painful. My question is can I still keep on applying differin gel on top of the acne even though it's "broken" skin? The differin seems to help calm the inflammation pretty quick and dry it out...

It has many potential side effects but this must be balanced against the fact that 80% of patients experience long term remission from acne after one course lasting 16-24 weeks.

i also wash face with mild cleanser and apply moisturizer, after apply moisturizer on my nose still becomes more oily. I went to see the dermatologist and he given me the differin cream, differin also make my nose oily and did not stop the oil production,which is also not helping, i very hopeless right now. please help with my oily nose.
We have tried over the counter products containing benzoyl peroxide and/or salicyclic acid, and sulfur. They seem to have made his acne worse. He does not have oily skin, and the pimples are just red - they do not seem to be puss-filled. I have tried products from 3-6 weeks before discontinuing. Am I giving them long enough? Are there any natural, home remedies I could try while I am waiting for him to see a dermatologist (in one month)? THANK YOU!
When i eat my face gets even more red, When i shower my skin is ok immediately after maybe a tad dry, but about 2 hours later it is VERY oily,My skin was always pale, but after the sunburn from under my eyes to my chin is very red. My neck is tan but my face has never tanned good , it just burns .... What would you reccomend as a good moisturizer?. I have skin that seems to breakout anytime i put lotion or moisturizer on it .... also im very oily and the lotion just makes it look even worse.
Accutane has many potential side effects but this must be balanced against the fact that it provides the best chance of long term remission from acne. However, as your son may outgrow his tendancy for acne as adolesence passes, I agree this should be considered only if his acne continues after other treatments have been fully explored.
Which antibiotic and creams has he tried? Erythromycin has a high resistance rate and oxytetracycline is usually preferable.
This combination cleared up all of my acne and dark spots in a month !!! So after two months I weened myself off of the topicals. Everything was fine.
About 2 years later, I had another bad breakout. I have really oily skin, lots of white and blackheads and acne scarring (dark spots) resulted from these pimples. I was prescribed the same treatment that had worked so well before (minus the Doryx) but of course it didnt work one bit this time.
I was then prescribed Differin and Finacea..
Ive lived with acne my whole life. Im 19 years old and I feel like Im never going to have a beautiful face. All my life ive felt insecure and ashamed to look people in the face. Ive talked to my doctor about it, and all she does is proscribe me things that never work. Ive tried most of the products that I can afford. I was just wondering if anyone out there has found a good product that may be helpful. Im willing to try pretty much anything. Thank you.
I have had acne red marks, not scars, that just won't go away. I've had them for about 2 years now and have tried products such as Differin & Atralin with no avail.
Is there any other solution?

I never wanted to really speak openly about my acne but after reading Sean and your story i want to warn all future accutane users to realize this is not a 100% quick fix also to realize the side affects of Roacutane (accutane). i have had acne since i was 12 I was put on this medication when i was 14 and am now 23 still with acne yes accutane will problably make your skin look the best it ever has, if you are lucky for a long time.

Do not use any alpha hydroxy acid products (those containing glycolic or lactic acid), salicylic acid products, retinoids (Retin A, Renova, Differin and Tazorac) and other topical acne medications such as benzoyl peroxide for 72 hours after the treatment. Also any scarubbing or acne soaps should be avoided for atleast 1 week after the miscrodermabrasion procedure.
s such a relieve when it comes out. I know that rubbing the area has probably made it worse, but it drives me crazy! It almost looks like hard white slivers. I have tried everything, and anything on my face. The dermatologist gave me Differin Gel, and topical antibiotic cream called Benzclin, and neither of these helped. The doctor at first thought that it was Cellulitis, and put me on Bacitricin, and then Cephalexin, and neither of those helped.
the first couple of days made my skin better, but now i seem to have a couple more zits formed, and my skin seems oilier. i dont know if its because its drawing out all of the impurities, or if its not right for my sensitive skin. how long should i keep using it for also? just in case it is right, i dont want to give up too soon.

The pimples i keep getting are cystic acne. They hurt really bad and nothing helps them go away. This is currently what i use on my face: Face wash with .5% salicylic acid and another facewash with 3.5% benzoyl peroxide. I MAKE SURE to take really good care of my skin but it dosent seem to work. Also i have a prescription face medication cream called BenzaClin which is 1% clindamycin and 5% Benzoyl peroxide.
