Hello, I was just wondering if anyone out there knows anything about the long term use of Depo-Provera Contraceptive. I have been using it for a few years now, and have no plans of stopping using it anytime soon, as I am in college and will be for quite some time to come. I know that I am putting myself at risk for Osteoporosis by using it for a long time. But what I don't know is considering the fact that since being on Depo, I have had pretty much no menstrual cycle for a very long time.
I got pregnant the first month off birth control pills with my 2 year old. I stopped taking Seasonale in July after being on it for 18 months to get pregnant. I never got my period after stopping Seasonale. My doctor wanted me to wait till the middle of September to see if my period would come naturally. It didn't so she prescribed me Provera (1 pill a day for 10 days) to make my body have a period. I took it like i was supposed.

I had tried the Provera when I was about 16 for about a year. I had to stop because I could not handle the side effects any longer. I did spot for about 3 months. It usually takes a few months for your system to get used to it.
The Lupron stops your period completely and basically puts your body into menopause, which is the one I am currently on.
I have been on the Depo Provera shot for more than 5 years now. I read that the recommended amount of time that a young woman should be on Depo is only 2 years. I am 20 now and I have been on it since I was 15. I have tried to come off of it once. I bled for about 3 weeks and then got back on it. Currently I have all kinds of pain. Back, kness, neck, arms, and I have migraines. I read about a calcium deficiency when doing research about Depo Provera.
i'm on the family planning medicaid insurance and the pharmacist said it doesn't cover it.

If you were my patient, i would advise you that the depo provera injection can be an excellent method of birth control. It is 99% effective and requires only that the patient have 4 injections per year. It is important to take a calcium supplement while using depo provera. Weight gain is probably the worst side effect.

Hi, my girlfriend lives overseas and she's on depo provera. She gets the shot once or twice a year only (not every 12 or 13 weeks). She has it injected one month in advance, every time before I travel overseas to visit her and have sex. I know depo provera meant to provide over 99% protection after 7 days, but we like to be extra cautious and wait a month before having sex. She had her last shot in September, and I visited her nearly a month later in October.
