Avatar n tn Morphine itself, however, is not affected by grapefruit juice, as it is not metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system. * Cyclosporine (Neoral). Blood levels of cyclosporine are increased if taken with grapefruit juice. A plausible mechanism involves the combined inhibition of enteric CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein, which potentially leads to serious adverse events (e.g., nephrotoxicity).Blood levels of tacrolimus (Prograf) can also be equally affected for the same reason as with cyclosporine.
Avatar m tn s anti-viral preclinical program, with compound designated NVP018, has generated significant data indicating that NVP018 has the potential to become an effective alternative or addition to current drugs for treating chronic hepatitis B infections. This new data will be presented at the EASL (European Association for the Study of the Liver) congress in London, in April 2014 (www.ilc-congress.eu). The results indicate that NVP018 has a dual effect against the hepatitis B virus.
Avatar f tn But when the body mistakes even harmless things as allergens,it triggers an allergic reaction. For understanding the mechanism of an allergic reaction pls log on to the following website: http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/HC/AdditionalContent/0,4054,1,00.html Britannica encyclopedia however says that allergies are a kind of autoimmune reaction. http://www.answers.com/topic/autoimmune-diseases Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted if you have any additional queries.
Avatar m tn I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
Avatar n tn This mechanism would account for the increase in levels of medications that are metabolized by CYP3A when concomitantly administered with grapefruit juice. A list of medications that have been shown, in clinical studies, to have an interaction with grapefruit juice can be found in the table below. All of the medications, except for theophylline and itraconazole, are known to be substrates of CYP3A. When given with grapefruit juice in pharmacokinetic studies their availability increases.
Avatar m tn s attempt to lubricate the eye in the absence of tears. There are several different types of cyclosporine preparations that can be used. Ask your vet about one caled Optimmune. It's an ointment and can be used twice a day instead of the water drops which may have to be used more often. Also, the mixtures have a fairly short shelf-life, and the water preparations, in an attempt to make them last longer, often have soap in them to act as a preservative.
Avatar f tn I was put on Questran prior to Cyclosporine, but the maltodextrin that makes up most of the powder would trigger a reaction, so I could not tolerate it. Since taking Cyclosporine, I am far less sensitive to the trigger foods, for instance, I am back on Questran and trying Boswelia because of some promising study results. I would like to continue this conversation, and will answer any questions you have. Thank you.
Avatar f tn Hi and Welcome ... I am not sure at all but wanted to stop by to welcome you. My dog (yes, I am serious) takes that med for her autoimmune eye disorder, but I'm not sure of its properties, etc. for hives.
Avatar m tn The mechanism of action of Campral® (acamprosate calcium) Delayed-Release Tablets in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Originally, several neurotransmitter systems, including GABA, were investigated for a possible role in Campral's mechanism of action. However, recent evidence suggests Campral's main interaction is with the glutamate system. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.

Avatar m tn Oyakawa I am in my 3rd year of medical school and I was wondering the mechanism of action of steroid injections in the eyelid causing cataracts. It is not an osmotic agent so why does that occur? thanks so much.
Avatar m tn definitely the lower levels of the cyclosporine may have contributed to your improved symptoms. i dont think ther acftigall is playing a role here. i think levels of 75-100 this far out from transplant is acceptable.

Avatar f tn Plavix has a unique mechanism of action by blocking the amplification of platelet activation by released ADP, and often used with aspirin to prevent the risk of clots for the first year after DES implant. Plavix and aspirin have different mechanism of action to prevent clots. After a year, plavix is usually discontinue as the risk for clots is decreased, and aspirin is continued long term. The risk of a clot is about 3%.
Avatar f tn Coadministration of oxycodone with serotonin reuptake inhibitors has been associated with development of the serotonin syndrome. The mechanism of interaction is unknown. Unlike other analgesics such as phenylpiperidine opioids (e.g., meperidine) and tramadol, oxycodone is not known to possess serotonergic activity and has not previously been associated with the serotonin syndrome.
Avatar m tn The specialist reviewed all of the options with us - cyclosporine, pilocarpine or tacrolimus with sirolimus. She said that very rarely has she seen any dog respond to cyclosporine after not responding to tacrolimus. She also said that because our dog doesn't have a dry, goopy nose, that pilocarpine wouldn't be a first choice. She recommended a mix of tacrolimus with sirolimus. She said sirolimus is new. I have not been able to find anything about this drug on the internet.
766574 tn?1238465473 m generalizing here, and many meds save our hides - Ask your docs if they can suggest any course of action for you to get healthier and maybe shed some meds - and read a lot. Maybe theres some dietary change that could help over the course of time... Hang in there though - anddont give up - I do know miracles happen .

Avatar m tn i think this is a reasonable way of lowering the cyclosporine dose and as long as labs are being followed regularly i think that this is OK. I am not aware of rapa affecting bile flow.
Avatar m tn For example, after each meal i now collapse with low BP when the blood rushes to the stomach to digest my food which i have had to deal with now for the past seven years and the anti rejection meds called cyclosporine have caused a lot of unpleasant 'mole like' crusty brown lesions on my torso which can be very itchy.

Avatar f tn Potassium is a chemical element and it is part of the electrolyte that should be in balance with other lytes to adequately conduct an electrical impulse that originates with the sinus node in the right atrium. The mechanism of action is not completely understood, but what is when a voltage (unit of potential for conduction) and electrolyte there will conduction and passage of electrical impluses.
Avatar m tn I know that you said that your dog has been on cyclosporine in the past for the treatment of KCS, however has she ever used a product called 'Optimmune"? It's a preparation that contains cyclosporine but it's different from the cyclosporine drops. When eyedrop preparations to treat KCS are made up, they have stabilizers put in so that they don't lose their potency too quickly before the whole preparation can be used.
Avatar m tn http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/578705 Ribavirin improves early responses to peginterferon through improved interferon signaling. Gastroenterology. 2010 Jul;139 The therapeutic mechanisms of ribavirin for hepatitis C are unclear. Microarray analyses have shown that ribavirin increases induction of interferon-stimulated genes. We evaluated viral kinetics, serum cytokine expression, and viral mutagenesis during early stages of peginterferon therapy with and without ribavirin.
Avatar n tn The excessive rubbing causes the redness and loss of hair. KCS is very common in all brachycephalic breeds (breeds with pushed-in faces) and breeds with bulging eyes. It's also common in Cocker Spaniels. Make an appointment with your vet and have him do a Schirmer Tear Test. The vet will put a small strip of paper with little "hash marks" on it right inside the lower eyelid.
Avatar m tn According to a study done, after taking cyclosporine for chronic urticaria at an average dose of 1.8 ± 1.1 mg/kg, 78% of patients attained complete remission. Side effects were generally mild and seen in 35% of patients; all were reversible by dose reduction. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
