Coughing up red

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing up red

Avatar m tn This morning I woke up coughing and I spit up a wad of yellow mucus and a dark red chunk about the size of a nickel. I'm not sure what this could be. I was alarmed at the sight of this, so I poked it with a straw; it had the consistency of fat. Is it possible that food was lodged in my throat overnight? Could this be a piece of my lung or some part of my throat?

Avatar n tn Then I end up coughing up the guck for a couple months. I think it turns into a sinus infection or something. With me, I usually can't stop coughing until I cough something up (I call it a slime ball). If this sounds like what you have, try to mix one half red wine vinegar and one half honey. Drink one tablespoon every hour for a couple days. Should help clear it up.
Avatar m tn Once I'd finished it's left me with a very soar throat and I'm coughing up blood every now and again, it's not excessive amount. I've also noticed that the skin around my left eye had lots of dark red patches and they seem to be all over my face but less dense. I do feel slightly drowsy also. Should I be going to see my doctor on this one or can you explain why this is happening.

Avatar m tn Well, if you are coughing up blood, a responsible adult in your life should be told so you can be seen by a doctor. I doubt I have to state the obvious that inhalation of smoke from weed isn't good for you. but coughing up blood is something that requires medical care so you need to talk to your parents about seeing a doctor.
Avatar m tn The other possibility is that you are coughing up blood. This can be due to bronchitis or pneumonia, lung cancers (especially in smokers), tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, pulmonary embolism, or fungal and other infections. Discuss these possibilities with your doctor. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar n tn Coughing up a small amount of blood when someone has an upper respiratory infection and a cough is not uncommon. The infection can cause irritation of the upper airways, the area at the back of the nose and sinuses. The blood could be from the irritation of the upper airways. This irritation will go away when the infection is gone. It could even be from a series of strong coughs.
Avatar n tn This comes on by having a wheezing episode and then I begin coughing. This brings on the process of coughing up blood. It may happen several days in a row or may be months in between. The blood is bright red and may contain some mucus in it. The blood sample is about a quarter size and may happen 3 to 6 times in a row. I have had a lung spirometer test, sputum sample, a bronscopy, lung biopsy, multiple CAT scans, multiple chest x-rays, a PET scan and many many blood tests.

Avatar n tn I looked up some causes for coughing up blood. The ones that I put a dash next to are the ones I think that you should be concerned about. I also wrote down some diagnostic tests you should consider. If you haven't done ALL of them, then GO and get them done. Okay I promise to leave you alone now..hehe Good luck!!
Avatar m tn I don't know if this is pertinent, but Advair caused such extreme coughing (almost incapacitating bronchitis) that I stopped using it. As for Spiriva, I find it extremely drying. I only use it every fourth day. On that regimen it helps. My lung health is actually much better and I am more comfortable since I gave up Advair, and my coughing is moderate. Advair also caused me to develop adrenal fatigue, which was quite dreadful, and I am still recovering from it.
Avatar n tn My husband's lungs gurgle and he coughs while reclining and he regularly coughs up red mucous. He uses a lot of prescription drugs for back & leg pain as well as anti-anxiety and sleep aids. He is also a heavy drinker. I'm not sure he needs as many pills as he takes and he does abuse them. He also has chronic pericarditis which has not flared up recently. He also has un-diagnosed enlarged prostrate because it takes him forever to urinate.
Avatar n tn My doctor got us a nebulizer to use and we keep using it sometimes up to 5 times a day. But he still coughs. Sometimes it gets so bad that the veins in his face look like they are gonna bust and he turns bright red. I have to blow in his face before he will take a breath. My doctor has listened to his lungs and chest over and over agagin and they are clear. We have has x rays done and nothing has shown up. He sounds like a cat when he breathes. it rattles in his throat.
Avatar n tn Sounds like you may have pneumonia and coughing up red blood is a cardinal sign of strep penumonia, this is the strain that can kill you and is the one you get vaccinated against every 5 years. Given your age, if the dr. makes a diagnosis of pneumonia you will be hospitalized for treatment (its standard protocol for anyone over 60), your also going to need to get a chest xray. In the mean time it's a good idea to take a break from smoking pot. Don't play games here, if you really do have s.
Avatar f tn I started coughing with horrible spasms over a year ago. Went to several physicians ENT, Pulm, and GI. The latter indicated that I had GERD which I have been on PPI as well as Nexum, and I am also taking Claratin and Zirtec.....after more than a year you would think I would stop coughing! I still cough, not as often or as severe, but when I start, I go on and on until I feel as though I am choking. This usually happens when I either am talking or eating, and yes it is embarassing.
Avatar n tn I’m a 61 year old male & have smoking pot nearly every day for about 4 years. I have been wheezing for about 2 months. Last week I coughed up a large wad of very red blood & my tonsils felt swollen. I don’t have a cough. Then nothing until again this morning I coughed up a little blood mixed with spit. I have been under a lot of stress lately & have lost a dear pet. My family has a history of asthma. Any ideas of what I might have? Thank you.

Avatar f tn I'm currently coughing up dried blood that looks like coffee grounds. I've thrown up dried blood like this but never coughed it up like this.
Avatar m tn • Provoke vomiting • Result in a red or blue face • Cause extreme fatigue • End with a high-pitched "whoop" sound during the next breath of air However, many people don't develop the characteristic whoop. Sometimes, a persistent hacking cough is the only sign that an adolescent or adult has whooping cough.
Avatar n tn Shortly afterwards my father was talking to one of the EMT's that were still there and he started laughing, then coughing and I told him to put his arms up, then he turned bright red and stiffened up like a board and fell straight back, hitting his head on the pavement. I went running to him and I thought the worse, he wasn't breathing and wouldn't wake up. They dispatched another ambulance and they were on their way again.
Avatar f tn I can't breathe even normally without going into a coughing fit. At a couple points I haven't been able to catch my breath because of the coughing and it leaves me light headed and with a headache. I did cough up some mucus that was a pale grey-green color. My chest feels like there is pressure on it and my lungs can't get the air they usually receive because it tickles as soon as I breathe.
Avatar m tn This morning I coughed up some phlegm and wasn't too worried, but then when I coughed a few hours later, I noticed bright red streaks of blood in the mucous. I suspect I picked up a lung infection and am guessing that it will clear with time. I already did one set of antibiotics at the start of this treatment with a head cold and hate to do another. I feel fine, other than the cough every hour or so, but I don't want to take any risks.
