coughing

3166874 tn?1343999162 My elderly pug (13 years old) has been coughing at night. This doesn't seem to occur during the day or evening and only when she is laying in her bed. I have read other comments about this and cannot find anything that addresses this type of issue at night. I have contacted my vet and am waiting for a return call. I am fortunate to have a vet that makes house calls. I also have a 6 year old pug but she doesn't sleep with the older pug and has no symptoms similar to her older companion.
Avatar m tn So I have an elderly dog, I don't know how old for sure. But he started puking and diarrhea all other over the place. My Mom read online to give him white rice and hamburger. He didn't like that too much and now my dog looks like walking death. We took him to the vet but for a 200$ payment just to get him looked at is a little much for us right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated . He is a mixed breed, mid sized dog and is at least 9 years old.
Avatar m tn As for the heart murmur, the treatment depends on exactly what type of heart defect is causing the murmur. Since your vet predicted that the dog would start coughing, and the dog has in fact started coughing, I take it that it is not a benign murmur. In my nonprofessional opinion, most likely the murmur is due to valve disease, and the cough is a symptom of congestive heart failure.
996946 tn?1503249112 s heart, and now that he is getting older, the damage is catching up with him. A cough in an elderly dog that has had heartworms is consistent with congestive heart failure. It does sound like the vet is thinking in terms of heart failure, based on what was prescribed. I would ask the doctor outright if that's what he thinks Barney has, just so you know for sure what you are dealing with.
Avatar m tn Can any help please. My elderly parents have 2 Japanese Chins and unfortunately we had to have one put to sleep yesterday. She had not been eating so the vet thought it was her teeth, she then had the back ones removed. She still was not eating so it was put down to tender gums with having her teeth out. The vet then did various x-rays, a barium meal and an ultrasound but still nothing showed up. She was still not eating and was vomiting what looked like water.
Avatar f tn My tiny four pound Maltese/Poodle cross has been coughing and I was wondering if someone has any ideas. He is about 8 1/2 and has had issues with his behavoir. He won't let us have him groomed without him trying to bite us or get his nails trimmed, so every four months or so we have to have him knocked out to have this done. I wasn't sure if this was some of his problem from the stuff they give him or what, but he does it alot especially at night.
Avatar f tn My 11 year old shih tzu has had mitral valve disease for 3 years which will eventually become CHF according to her cardiologist. She's currently taking about as much medication as my elderly parent including enalapril, vetmedin, spironolactone, hydrocodone (to control the bad coughing that caused her to produce seizure like symptoms and eventually faint several times) and theophylline as a bronchodialator.
4121556 tn?1350428560 My dog coughs as though he has something stuck somewhere, I cannot see anything, he eats quite well, Could it be lung worms or could it be a tumour? he often vomits.bile.He is old now, and his back legs are going, should he be put to sleep? euthenasia?
Avatar m tn My 5 year old miniature schnauzer is 5 years old. She has started coughing and is becoming more frequent. It is almost a panting cough? She also has a bad odor. Which has been going on for a month or two.(odor). I have listened to her chest with a stethescope and she is breathing fast and it sounds thick and dry. I thoguht it was maybe just a case of dust because we mulched leaves (oak and pecan) and we didn't have a bag on the mower and it got pretty dusty.
Avatar f tn You might move things a bit, if you can, so the areas the dog travels through are wider. You should look around and make sure there is nothing the dog can run into that may injure him, inside and outside. Some have put plastic runners down so the dog gets used to the feel and sound of the rubber to navigate to various areas. You can also put a bell attached to you so the dog knows where you are. Of course, when taking the dog outside, always keep him on a leash.
Avatar m tn Yor dog doesn't sleep? And she is elderly for a dog. I think it's time to see a vet... this could be a form of canine dementia.
Avatar n tn My 12 yr. old pug has been coughing for 3 months. I have been to two different vets and together they have ruled out collapsed trachea, kennel cough, pneumonia and heart disease. He has been on several different antibiotics and steriods. He is still eating as usual and the coughing seems to be worse at night. They are not productive coughs just dry hacking coughs. I am running out of ideas and am desperate for answers.
Avatar f tn She is an inside dog and we have a fenced in yard. She is only around our other dog who has no coughing issues at all. Is it possible that my Pug has allergies with all the pollen floating around in the air. We live in the woods in North Carolina.
Avatar m tn Dear Pug Dad, On about Page 4 is a post entitled, "My dog has been coughing for..." and it's an old post. HIS dog, it turns out, did eat some burrs that got caught in his fur... and MY dog has been coughing and he also ate some burrs. Since it was an old post, he did not come back about it.
1171933 tn?1263476758 My Chihuahua has severe bouts of Coughing, Wheezing, Choking, & Breathing problems during the night. It seems to be a little bit better in the daytime. I've had him to Vet's, but after spending $1,000 + he has not changed. Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be?
Avatar m tn Hi. This could be something very simple like a bit of a tummy bug. He may have eaten something that has upset his stomach, and nothing more. Dogs naturally know how to deal with this - by not eating (in other words, by takling something into their gut that they know will just upset it all over again). This is an instinctive response. I wouldn't try forcing your dog to eat today. Leave him 24hrs without food (but make sure he has access to water).
Avatar m tn If your dog's heart is enlarged, he could have right-sided congestive heart failure. If, as a side-effect, his abdomen is accumulating fluid, then he won't be able to eat. What else did the Vet say? Did he place your dog on any meds? I'm curious to know if your dog is elderly?
Avatar f tn I am 64 yr old female. After 3 days of intense physical activity moving my elderly mother and clearing out her home I developed a headache and mid back pain. Bending over, coughing, sneezing, etc causes an explosion of pain in back of head that takes a few minutes to ease, leaving dull headache. Never experienced anything like it. Saw doctor who ordered CT scan which was normal including sinuses.
Avatar n tn Can oral herpes cause excessive coughing and throat irritations that won't go away? Would the symptoms for elderly people who have herpes be more severe than someone younger? If someone with genital herpes contaminates objects(tv remote, keyboards, phones, etc) that are used with other people (which arent sexual items), what are the chances of the virus transmitting? And if so would they have hsv 1 or 2?
3181540 tn?1344550924 My dog is coughing a lot, sometimes it wakes him up too, but mostly he sleeps well. He eats normally, even more than usually. He's 2,5 years old and was just recently in a pet hotel, in contact with a lot of dogs. It might be kennel cough, but I'm not sure. What should I do?
