Chronic pancreatitis pain treatment

Common Questions and Answers about Chronic pancreatitis pain treatment

Avatar n tn however, patients with alcohol-induced chronic pancreatitis who continue to drink have increased mortality. Treatment for chronic pancreatitis primarily involves pain control - although it is sometimes stated that chronic pancreatitis "burns out" over time, the duration of time over which this may occur is highly variable, if it occurs at all. If medications aren't doing the job, then more specialized treatment may be considered.
Avatar n tn After having it once, some people seem to be more prone to having repeated attacks, and then often they develop chronic pancreatitis as a result. And yes, it can just come out of the blue like that, but it's more likely that SOMETHING triggered this episode, you just haven't been able to identify what it is. The pain does radiate to the back with an attack. I don't suspect an SOD problem, though, usually the SOD attack is fast, severe and totally debilitating during it's brief duration.
Avatar n tn My question is does this mean I have chronic pancreatitis or can you not tell on a MRCP? Does the duct dilatation set off an inflamation of the liver and pancreas and cause the pancreatitis pain? Also can the duct dilatation heal on its own in time? I have no desire to undergo an ERCP as I've heard such nightmare stories from people who have undergone but yet I'm so tired of not feeling good and having pain and just would like to feel good again. Thanks for your help.

Avatar n tn Wellness Simple (salmon, not lamb) and Wellness Stews are what I feed my dog with pancreatitis. He has chronic smoldering pancreatitis and is 15 1/2 years old. He is a terrier mix but it's obvious there is schnauzer mixed in his bloodline. His lipase level was >6000 today but renal function is normal except BUN a tiny bit above normal. Creatinine was 1.7 (high end of normal). He is having normal stools and has a great appetite and is not vomiting.
Avatar n tn My surgeon told me i was still healing from the surgery, i had the surgery on February 18th. I went to my Doctor today and he told me he suspects chronic pancreatitis and has taken some bloods. Am i not too young for that? I'm really worried and whenever i think about it tears come to my eyes. I've read that more than half the people diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis die within the first 7 years of being diagnosed.
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with Chronic Pancreatitis and since then have seen a gastro doctor. He is recommending that I have my gallbladder removed, or as he stated "yank it out". He has me on Urso 250mg @ 3 times a day; Nexium @ 40mgs; and Viokase 8 tab 5 times a day then given me percocet for when I am in pain. First off, I am very concerned about removal of my gallbladder as a cure-all, it seems drastic.
Avatar n tn I have been fighting Chronic Pancreatitis for 5 years ever sence I had my gallbladder out. I have 3 Drs. primarea, Gastro, and ERCP specialist. I have had 5 ERCP,s done with Sphincterotomies done each time and stints put in. this gives me 3-5 months relief. I have had 2 EUS showing abnormalities and scaring in the hed tail and body of pancreas. But it allways comes back, now I have weekly pain. Most of the Pain is on the left side upper rib cage. My question is Drs.
1264088 tn?1279484422 CP is most often caused from drinking but other things can cause it such as Hereditary CP Cystic Fibrosis Chronic blockage of the pancreatic duct Injury Hyperlipidemia Hyperparathyroidism The enzymes help with the digestion of fat. They can help the pain in a few people but others they do not help. It is best if you stick with a very very low fat diet. You can also have bouts of acute CP so anytime you feel worse I would go to ER.
1453931 tn?1285188953 Sorry to hear about your pancreatitis. Just a question how did you know you had chronic pancreatitis? I had my GB removed just like you in 2008. I had a bile leak and when they preformed a ERCP I got acute pancreatitis. It is a risk associated with the ERCP. Anyway after my amylase and lipase went down to normal I was checked out of the hospital. However since then I have had horrible nocturnal abdominal pain and it also happens when on an empty stomach longer than 4 hours.
Avatar m tn Hi, I saw a post of a case similar to mine where the liver was affected as well as the pancreas with wieght gain instead of loss on a low fat diet. Im wondering what causes that especially in pancreatitis? I loss alot of weight a year ago, was real sick with abnormal bruising and weakness, falling down, ect, this was before pancreas started acting up again, prior to that I had only one acute episode of pancreatitis.
Avatar m tn I am very sorry to hear about your long term pain. You are so young to know the meaning of Chronic Pain. You've asked a tough question. How long has it been since you had a good clinical evaluation? How long has it been since you have had imaging? If it has been more than six months I beleive I would ask for more recent images to see where you are in the disease process.
Avatar f tn I have been doing research online regarding Autoimmune Pancreatitis. I am noticing no case studies done in my sons age group, treatment is corticosteroids/steroid saving therapies, over a prolonged period of time. In all the research i have been reading there is no data regarding long term prognosis , or quality of life in persons with this disorder. Another concern of mine is if he has to go on a steroid long term, what about schooling?
Avatar n tn My aunt had a mini schnauzer who lived over 18 years, and most of those years included chronic pancreatitis with a few acute attacks requiring hospitalization. Apparently pancreatitis is a big genetic problem with that breed now. Don't despair! Things are looking good for you both right now.
Avatar n tn from years of worrying), match up quite a bit with chronic pancreatitis. I am not experiencing weight loss or diarrhea. I'm going to call my Gastroenterologist to see if I can get squeezed in. But, naturally, I'm terrified. Can any other illnesses also come across with these symptoms? Also, medscape has those depressing mortality figures. It sounds like I'm dead meat if I have this. One article said there is no treatment yet I hear of people who end up having surgeries.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis this am and schedualed for a ERCP for friday. I have some concerns about this diagnosis and this test. I have not been hospitalized for this condition at all, not even ER. it has taken me over a month to get diagnosis and still no relief from discomfort. Just more tests to take. I look like a junkie from all the blood they have taken and they want more. My almase and lipase levels have continued to rise over the course of the past fourteen days.
Avatar n tn Kathleen, Pain behind the ribcage is a common symptom of pancreatitis. I have had acute pancreatitis which has now become chronic pancreatitis. Pain can be present in many areas, lower abdomen by navel, mid abdomen, flank areas, rib cage, back and shoulders. Pain is usually more severe when one is having a flare-up, when irritation and inflamation is present . Continued inflamation can lead to an acute attack.
Avatar m tn When people say chronic pain and nothing else it limits the responses to pain meds usually narcotic. If the source of the chronic pain is told then people with the same problem may give ideas for temporary relief thru other means,,for instance I"ve had multi back surgerys and can tell things that did or didnt work for me but only if I know that the persons pain comes from problems similar to mine.

Avatar f tn Different questions in different forums from related problems....... If you have been on narcotics as the primary therapy for migraines and arthritis for over a year it is probably time for a new physician. Yes, chronic narcotics are associated with pancreatitis and not the treatment of choice for your stated problems.
254215 tn?1195096984 She kept vomiting, wouldn't eat, etc. My vet said she probably has chronic pancreatitis, since she's had these episodes a few times. This time is by far the worst, and I am really worried. How long does it usually take for pancreatitis to get better? Also, her right front paw is really cold and she keeps dragging it. Could this be related in any way? Thanks!

6472661 tn?1381772732 This started with maple sausage links my grandson dropped and Chloe scarfed up 6 of them. But no throwing up or diarrhea I took her to my vet Last saturday, they did an exam and xrays of her stomach and intestines for blockages and they were clean. Her doggy Dr. said she thought it was pancreatitis.
Avatar m tn Hello, Thank you to anyone who may respond and offer information in regards to my post. My simple history is I have been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and then was upgraded chronic p. I have been to a slew of doctors(GP/GIs) who have done numerous tests including multiple ultrasounds, amylase/lipase serums, ct scan with contrast, and a hida scan with all of them showing negative results. My pancreatitis seems to come and go for no apparent reason.
Avatar n tn Animals, like people, can develop chronic pancreatitis after only one acute attack of pancreatitis. My aunt was able to keep her dog's case managed for many years, with only a couple more hospitalizations. I just want you to be prepared for what you might be up against. So far, Piper's case could be a whole lot worse, so hopefully she'll keep improving and that will be the last time you ever have to deal with this.
902019 tn?1249865014 I've only ever had mild pancreatic pain - which is often the case with AIP vs chronic pancreatitis. Main problem is biliary obstruction if my LFTs spike. Keep well and pls keep me posted.
Avatar f tn With chronic pancreatitis, amylase and lipase levels may not elevate. It is common for them to only elevate in an acute attack. Often, enzyme levels will rise in the first few hours and then come back down. Since doctors think that elevated amylase and lipase levels are the only indicators of pancreatitis, they will not diagnose you if the enzymes are not elevated. The best thing advice that I can give you is watch your fat content and pray. And know that you are not crazy. It is your pancreas.
Avatar n tn There is a conditi0on of chronic recurrent pancreatitis. These patients have recurrent attacks of pancreatitis but do not have structural abnormalities. Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction is a condition in which the opening of the pancreatic duct (the sphuincter of Oddi) does not function properly. Patients have recurrent attacks of abdominal pain and slight elevations of pancreatic enzymes.
