I have smoked for 40+ years and want to QUIT! My Dr gave me a script for Chantix but after seeing some Thyroid issues here I'm concerned. I have no Thyroid due to Follicular Thyroid Cancer, I take Levothyroxine daily for the rest of my life and have to have blood work every 6 months to maintain my TSH T3 T4 levels to prevent the cancer from returning. Is it safe for me to take CHANTIX?
When you say "the pill" to quit smoking, do you mean Chantix? I used it to quit 5 yrs ago and had no trouble with it, at all; however, my husband started on it, then read the possible side effects, got scared and quit taking it. I have not had a cigarette for 5 yrs, he still smokes. Keep in mind the side effects are not inevitable; some people get them, some don't.
The drawback to Chantix is that it's expensive and is not covered by insurance......
I know that is due to not smoking and I expected some weight gain from that. But, I still have no energy. I am calling my doctor tomorrow to ask for more blood work. What should I specifically ask for? I am ready to start smoking again just to make me go to the bathroom. NOT. Any advice would be helpful.
I took Chantix for 6 weeks and I haven't smoked in nearly 1 year and 2 months. Although Chantix is generally prescribed for 3 months, and it really should be taken for that long, it is rather expensive and some try to stop using it before the recommended time.

Hello! I was also concerned about the depression and the Chantix affecting me, but my doctor said that the likelyhood of feeling suicidal or more depressed is quite remote, so I decided to give it a try and would quit if I felt awful. I know of a few people who used it and actually claimed to have become "homicidal" and felt extremely angry and violent. Both of these individuals were very, very heavy drinkers, and I am certain that is why Chantix affected them that way.
I have a question for those of you who used the Chantix to kick the cigarettes. I have smoked on and off for years, and I have quit several times for long periods of time, but this time I am in need of some sort of assistance doing it (the thought of no cigarettes is worse for me than the thought of no norco ever was). It took months to get into an Endo where I live. I was exhausted, had some weight gain but also had an increased appetite. I began having heart palpitations and it wasn't until I saw the endo that it was treated. I've lost some hair, but I've primarily lost my memory. I have to write everything down, literally everything or I forget to do it. Oh, and I'm HOT all the time. My temp runs 99-100.5 and I feel like it's 110. Literally.
The reality is that these drugs - Chantix and antidepressants (which includes Zyban, which is the drug Buproprion also known as Wellbutrin) interact with our brain chemistry and Chantix has not been around long enough to have comprehensive and conclusive long term reasearch evidence (researches talk that basically means we don't know what we may find way down the road and all new Rx's have this risk).
For 17 months i am still undx will get tests back in a few days ...and i want to finally quit smoking but they want me to wait to fill the prescription until all my tests come back now im getting worried ...
Certainly it's better if you cut down on the cigarettes. Ask your OB or RE to prescribe Chantix for you. I hear it's ok to take during pregnancy and it really helps with trying to quit smoking.
Know you're not a lone if you can't quit, many women aren't able to completely quick during pregnancy and the baby turns out okay. I'm not endorsing it of course, just letting you know that you're not the only that's pregnant and could just cut back.
